"Sorry, I'm late."
"There's nothing to apologize for; what needs to happen will happen," Xin Shui Su said.
Third had no choice but to swallow his words.
"Where are we going now?" Third asked.
"To the altar," Xin Shui Su replied.
"You found it?"
"It never disappeared," Xin Shui Su said.
Wang Sanguan, walking ahead, seemed to have settled everything. He came down and walked alongside Third.
Wang Sanguan opened his mouth and said, "I really envy you!"
Third asked in confusion, "What do you envy about me?"
Wang Sanguan replied, "Back when our group perished, the old died and the young fell. Yet here you are, safe and sound. How can that not make people envious?"
Third said, "What are you talking about? I don’t understand."
Wang Sanguan laughed, "Right, I must be getting old and confused. I said I wouldn't bring up the past again, yet here I am." He seemed to avoid answering Third's question.
Third wanted to get an answer from Xin Shui Su, but Xin Shui Su remained silent.
"Wang Sanguan said, 'Tomorrow we will have to walk for another hour through the mountains to reach that place.'
Third nodded. He was completely unaware of the details; he had only heard them mention 'back then' repeatedly, but he had no recollection of what had happened during that time.
They continued to move forward.
Wang Sanguan spoke as if reminiscing about the past, 'Back then, there were seven of us.' He chuckled. 'We were fearless, unafraid of anything. Wherever it was dangerous or strange, we would go. None of us expected to find such a place and become entangled with it for a lifetime. It must be fate!'
Third listened as if he were hearing a storyteller.
Wang Sanguan seemed to be talking to himself, hoping that Third would engage in conversation. He had been like that back then too, but now, although he spoke a few more words, it still felt pitifully sparse.
Wang Sanguan continued, 'I came back a few times after that, but nothing came of it. I was foolish; without you, how could this ever succeed?'
'So, did you kill the person from back then?' Third asked calmly.
Wang Sanguan replied nonchalantly, 'If we're talking about killing, I've killed quite a few people, but I've never killed the wrong one.'
'Did you eliminate Wang Er Gou's family?'
Wang Sanguan seemed to be recalling something and said, 'You're referring to the people I buried before.'
'Wasn't he your nephew?'
Wang Sanguan smiled and said, 'I have no connection with him at all; he was just lying to deceive you. I investigated him; he doesn't have any so-called family. But it's true that he knows about Feng Shui.'"
There were so many deceivers hidden around, and yet he was completely unaware.
As they moved forward, the fog began to thicken.
The dense mist significantly reduced visibility, indicating that they were getting closer to their destination. Wang Er Gou had likely not deceived him about this matter.
The thickest part of the fog was where the altar was located.
The group moved in a grand procession, but only a few dared to speak.
The fog grew heavier, making the path increasingly difficult to navigate, and the sky was quickly darkening.
Wang Sanguan suddenly said, "Everyone, let's take a break here."
Upon hearing this, the group immediately halted. Wang Sanguan turned to Third and said, "We should be there soon."
Third nodded in acknowledgment.
Third had no recollection of the altar, but he had gathered some fragmented information from Wang Er Gou's words.
The Eastern Guan Mountain Range loomed majestically, stretching endlessly with lush greenery that resembled a sprawling dragon. In this area, the fog was so thick that human figures were barely discernible.
The group rested for about five minutes before setting off again. They continued on, relying on their specialized flashlights to determine their positions.
Although Wang Sanguan appeared quite old, he was surprisingly robust. He climbed steadily without showing any signs of fatigue.
Until they passed through the last dense thicket.
The mist seemed to recede, unwilling to penetrate the forest. When the searchlight was turned on, and the scene before Third came into view, he couldn't help but gasp in surprise, though he quickly composed himself.
Indeed, before them stood the Eastern Pass Altar, an Ancient Altar. It was square-shaped, roughly the size of a football field, with a circular platform rising four to five meters high above it. The altar was adorned with intricate patterns and ancient inscriptions.
Wang Sanguan issued a command to the archaeological team leader from back then, and soon the group dispersed, quickly attending to their respective tasks.
Some set up spiritual altars, while others cleaned away dust.
There were also those observing the sky and assessing the feng shui.
Yet not a single person removed their robes. Third watched this busy group, standing aside unsure of what to do. Xin Shui Su was in the same predicament. Wang Sanguan also stood by quietly observing.
At that moment, several roars echoed through the air. Wang Sanguan's expression changed as he said, "The ancient guardian beasts of the altar have appeared."
Sure enough, moments later, four beasts charged out from the forest in all directions. They were as powerful as bulls, each sporting two horns atop their heads, their skin patterned with tiger stripes. Their limbs appeared exceptionally strong, as if they could pounce at any moment. Their breaths sounded like human gasps, and their mouths revealed deep fangs that sent shivers down one's spine.
Wang Sanguan calmed himself while the others in the team seemed oblivious to the danger.
Xin Shui Su frowned slightly, and Third observed that these beasts remained motionless.
If they charged forward, it wouldn't be a problem; everyone in the team had a submachine gun at hand.
Suddenly, Wang Sanguan turned to Third and said, "I need your assistance."
Third looked at Wang Sanguan with confusion. Wang Sanguan said, "They only recognize the scent of your blood. As long as you let some blood out, they will retreat once they catch the smell."
After hearing this, Third hesitated at first, but Xin Shui Su said, "What he said is true."
Only then did Third reluctantly let out some blood. Sure enough, after the divine beast caught the scent of Third's blood, it roared a few times and slowly retreated.
Wang Sanguan, who had been anxiously waiting, finally felt relieved. This altar had always recognized only him; it was the same back then.
Wang Sanguan felt a sense of nostalgia. Yes, he was someone favored by the heavens, someone who would be protected to a certain extent.
He remembered that Waiter's grandfather had also said something similar.
Xin Shui Su quickly helped Third bandage his hand.
Third looked at the altar illuminated by Searchlight. It felt as if some sensation was awakening within him, yet he couldn't quite grasp it.
Third asked, "What is our purpose for coming here?"
Xin Shui Su replied, "To activate the altar."
Just as Xin Shui Su finished speaking, a deep rumble of thunder suddenly echoed in the sky, followed by a rolling flash of lightning. The entire altar was bathed in a pale light, an eerie white.
It was as if the day had been washed clean, yet it carried a terrifying meaning within it.
