"Fang Yan! Yu Xia! Stop hiding! I know you're here." In the abandoned hall, Li Tiancheng suddenly spoke up.
He was alone. Xiao Yu gestured silently.
But he had a gun. I mimicked the gesture of holding a gun.
We continued to move upward. Xiao Yu pointed toward the upper floor.
I nodded in agreement with Xiao Yu's suggestion and quietly shifted my steps toward the staircase.
"Fang Yan! Do you know who Yu Xia is?" Zhang Mingyang's voice echoed again, causing me to involuntarily halt.
"Let's go!" Xiao Yu tugged at my sleeve anxiously.
"I told you before, I'm investigating a theft case, but do you know what was stolen?" Li Tiancheng's voice grew closer, and curiosity overcame my fear.
"You study physics; do you know about string theory?" Li Tiancheng's next words caught me off guard.
Of course, I knew. This theory posits that the fundamental units of nature are tiny, string-like "strings," and different vibrations and movements of these strings give rise to various fundamental particles.
"Then do you know the relationship between string theory and parallel universes?" Li Tiancheng asked again.
I found myself struggling to grasp the meaning behind his words.
"I don't really understand either. As you can see, I'm just someone who does manual labor," Li Tiancheng chuckled lightly. "But what I can tell you is that in-depth research on string theory has already proven the existence of parallel worlds, and traveling through parallel timelines has become a reality."
I was completely stunned.
In my mind, string theory was still an esoteric subject. How could it be that in his words, the research had already reached the application stage?
"Don't believe him; he's lying to you!" Xiao Yu mouthed to me. "You're studying physics too; do you think what he says is credible?"
Of course, I didn't believe him, but I had genuinely crossed into this timeline, which left me no choice but to accept it.
"Let's go!" Seeing that I was still hesitating, Xiao Yu pulled me along as we continued to run upward. "He's coming after us!"
I followed Xiao Yu in a daze, climbing the stairs littered with construction debris, while Li Tiancheng's words echoed repeatedly in my mind.
Could it be that he wasn't lying?
But who exactly was he? He had mentioned belonging to X Identity Theft Case; what kind of organization was that?
What was his purpose in wanting to capture me and Xiao Yu? After all, we were just innocent researchers who had accidentally gotten caught up in this!
As I was lost in thought, I suddenly felt my foot twist—I had stepped on a brick!
I lost my balance and fell forward heavily, my knee hitting a protrusion on the stairs. A cry of pain escaped my lips as I instinctively leaned back, forgetting that I was still on the staircase, and fell backward onto the ground.
Just when I thought the back of my head was about to make intimate contact with the ground, my body suddenly collided with a broad, solid chest.
I looked up and could only see a sharply defined jawline.
It was Li Tiancheng's jaw.
"I've caught up with you," Li Tiancheng said, a smile curling at the corners of his mouth as he wrapped his left arm around my neck and pointed a gun at Xiao Yu with his right hand.
I felt my body stiffen instantly, my chin pressed against the Mechanical Watch on Li Tiancheng's wrist, making it hard to breathe.
"Sister Fang!" Xiao Yu peeked out from around the corner of the stairs, half of his head visible as he stared intently at Li Tiancheng.
"Let me tell you who he really is," Li Tiancheng leaned down and whispered in a low voice near my ear. "Yu Xia is a thief who traverses parallel dimensions!
"What he steals are other people's identities!"
