"Identity theft?" I couldn't comprehend it at first.
"New technology has led to a new type of crime," Li Tiancheng sighed. "They traverse parallel timelines, enter the bodies of victims, erase their consciousness, steal their identities, and then sell those identities to wealthy individuals who want to experience different lives. After the wealthy have their experience, they artificially create an accident to kill the victim's body, thus eliminating the evidence.
"The X Identity Theft Case I am part of specializes in investigating these cases."
I still couldn't bring myself to believe it. Xiao Yu was someone I had personally nurtured; how could he be a thief?
"Is he really still the Xiao Yu you know?" Li Tiancheng asked me softly.
I was taken aback and looked at Xiao Yu again, only to see him suddenly withdraw his concern for me. His expression was calm, and a playful smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.
How could this be!
The person who crashed into Li Tiancheng's car could have been the thief Yu Xia, but the one standing before us was undeniably the Xiao Yu I knew!
At that moment, I suddenly noticed the Mechanical Watch digging into my neck. The dial clearly displayed the current time: 20:56!
But hadn't Xiao Yu said that he would swap control with the original owner of the body at nine o'clock in the morning or evening?
"Hahahaha—" Xiao Yu suddenly burst into laughter, growing louder and more breathless until tears streamed down his face. "I'm done acting! I'm done acting!"
My mind went blank.
"As an expert in the art of thievery, how could I possibly lose control of this body!"
It turned out he had been deceiving me all along!
Yu Xia, no, it was Xiao Yu, had somehow drawn a knife, tossing it up and down, reflecting the bright moonlight.
"But have you ever considered, Fang Yan," Yu Xia suddenly lost his smile, "why it is me who has crossed over, and not the Xiao Yu you know?"
"You haven't contacted me for two days. Why should I come looking for you instead of continuing to hide?"
Why! How would I know why! I was just an innocent researcher caught up in this chase game while working overtime on a report!
"Li Tiancheng, you tell her who she really is." Yu Xia sneered, "You've been chasing us for so long, so please reveal this mystery."
I turned my head and looked at Li Tiancheng for help.
Li Tiancheng sighed and spoke to me, though his eyes remained fixed on Yu Xia.
"Fang Yan, like Yu Xia, you are also a Web Novelist."
"You are both known as the famous Genderless Thief."
I felt as if the world was spinning around me.
How is this possible? How could I be a Web Novelist?
The trajectory of my life in my memories has been nothing but a steady progression: from elementary school to university, then graduate studies, and finally entering the Physical Research Institute.
How could I possibly be that cruel Web Novelist?
But then again, if I were just an innocent bystander, why is Li Tiancheng relentlessly pursuing me? And why is Yu Xia helping me escape?
I felt a suffocating fear, as if I were submerged in bottomless water, devoid of sunlight, with only the invisible pressure of the water surrounding me, squeezing me relentlessly.
"Now, your partner is in my hands," Li Tiancheng's voice seemed to come from a distant place. "Surrender."
"You are too naive, Li Tiancheng," Yu Xia sighed. "Why should I save Fang Yan? I could easily escape on my own."
"We have tracked your transaction records. You have a Dark Web account, and Fang Yan holds the highest authority while your access only allows you to utilize ten percent of the funds," Li Tiancheng shook his head. "I don't think you'd be pleased to see us controlling that Dark Web account."
"Ten percent is enough," Yu Xia's expression darkened. "I've confirmed it; this woman's mind was damaged during her last traversal. She remembers nothing now! If I can't have her, neither will you!"
