The morning sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, casting mottled patterns on Lu Duoduo's bed. She squinted her eyes slightly, her hand fumbling on the nightstand until she finally grasped the relentless ringing of her phone. Her voice was hoarse from just waking up as she weakly responded.
“Duoduo!” The voice on the other end, A-Ran, was nearly bursting with excitement. “Your novel 'The Overbearing Brother Loves Me' has been bought by Xinwen Entertainment for film rights!”
Lu Duoduo's drowsiness evaporated in an instant. She sat up abruptly. “Really? Which novel?”
“The one that caused a stir online! Xinwen even said they want to invite top domestic stars to participate. Duoduo, this is your chance to shine!”
A sudden shock coursed through Lu Duoduo, followed by a wave of complex emotions. She hesitated before saying, “A-Ran, I’m not really keen on working with Xinwen. Is there any way I can—”
“Are you crazy?” A-Ran's voice shot up an octave. “This is the opportunity you’ve always dreamed of! How can you let it slip away?”
Lu Duoduo wanted to argue further, but A-Ran interrupted her decisively. “Two o'clock this afternoon, Xinwen meeting. Don’t be late!”
The call ended abruptly, leaving Lu Duoduo staring blankly at her phone. What should she do? Did she really have to go to Xinwen? Anxiously pacing around her room, she finally dialed a number that made her heart race—the Big Boss.
When the call connected, a deep and calm voice answered, “Hello.”
“Brother,” Lu Duoduo said cautiously, “Are you at the company?”
“I’m in a meeting outside. What’s up?” His voice was as steady as ever.
A flicker of hope ignited in Lu Duoduo ’s heart; since he wasn’t at the company, she could quietly sign the contract. Writing under a pen name, Lu Lichen was so busy that he probably wouldn’t even notice this little author of hers.
In the afternoon, Lu Duoduo and A-Ran arrived at Xinwen Entertainment as scheduled. In the conference room, she signed her name, and the contract was successfully completed.
Lu Duoduo excitedly grabbed A-Ran's hand. "A-Ran, did you hear? Zhao Mo might play the male lead! He was my idol back in high school!"
A-Ran chuckled and pinched her cheek. "Your crush from school must have ears that are almost calloused from all the listening."
Just as Lu Duoduo was lost in her excitement, a familiar voice suddenly came from behind her. She turned around to see Lu Lichen's cold face, and her heart tightened. "Brother..."
Lu Lichen's gaze scrutinized her. "What are you doing here?"
Lu Duoduo stammered, "I was just passing by..."
There was an undeniable command in Lu Lichen's eyes. "Come to my office."
With a face full of indignation, Lu Duoduo could only follow him into the office like a warrior lamenting their fate.
"Sit."
At his command, Lu Duoduo quickly took a seat across from Lu Lichen.
Watching her fidget uncomfortably, he couldn't help but smirk slightly. "You called me out of the blue this morning, and now you suddenly show up here. What do you want? Running low on money lately?"
"No, no," Lu Duoduo hurriedly waved her hands, not daring to tell the truth. With a cheerful smile, she said, "Of course I came to see my brother! I heard you've been really busy lately, and Mom asked me to check if you're taking care of yourself."
Lu Lichen smirked, "Oh really? It seems I’ve been home more often than someone else, hasn’t it?"
Upon hearing this, Lu Duoduo's smile immediately froze on her face. Ever since she had quit her job without notice, her mother had given her a thorough scolding, and she hadn’t dared to go home lately.
At that moment, an assistant knocked on the door and entered with a stack of documents. Bowing respectfully to Lu Lichen, he said, "Mr. Lu, here are the items you asked me to bring."
Lu Lichen nodded and took the stack of papers, carefully flipping through them.
