Lu Lichen picked up the book and glanced at the promotional tagline on the cover, frowning slightly. "German Orthopedic Romance? What does this mean?"
Lu Duoduo felt a surge of embarrassment and quickly lunged to snatch the book from his hands, hiding it behind her back. In a moment of panic, she exclaimed, "Haha, it's nothing! This book is just a cliché medical drama about a foreign romance. It's really nothing special."
"Oh?" Lu Lichen raised an eyebrow. "The medical drama is called 'The Overbearing Brother Loves Me'? You quit your job just to write this?"
How could he read so much in the blink of an eye? Lu Duoduo felt utterly devastated. "Brother!"
"Alright," Lu Lichen said, noticing her face was turning redder by the second. He finally decided to let her off the hook. "You can go back now. I'll pick you up after work, and we can have dinner together tonight."
"Oh." Lu Duoduo nodded, her heart racing with joy. Compared to Lu Lichen, she would rather face her mother's relentless questioning.
"Wait, leave the novel here. I'll take a look when I have time."
Oh no! She knew he wasn't that kind-hearted!
A-Ran had been waiting outside Xinwen and immediately rushed over as soon as Lu Duoduo appeared. "Duoduo, spill it! What's your relationship with the big boss of Xinwen?"
Lu Duoduo pouted. "He's just my cold-faced brother!"
"My goodness!" A-Ran exclaimed excitedly. "Why didn't you mention you have such great resources? You could become a big shot in no time!"
"Hmph, I don't want to rely on him. Today's incident was just an accident." As she said this, she began to worry again. "A-Ran, what if he really reads the novel? I won't be able to face him again!"
A-Ran leaned in and whispered, "Is the male lead in your story really based on your brother? Then the female lead wouldn't be... you, would it?"
"How could that be? It's all made up; there's no basis for it. This is reality, not some melodramatic novel!" Lu Duoduo huffed angrily. "I'm not talking to you anymore; I'm going home!"
Remembering the awkward atmosphere when she shared a ride with Lu Lichen, Lu Duoduo wisely decided to head home right away.
"Oh dear, Duoduo's back! Let me see, your little face seems to have gotten thinner again! You need to eat well tonight."
As soon as Lu Duoduo stepped through the door, Mother Lu enveloped her in a warm hug, fussing over her hair and face like a loving mother who missed her daughter dearly.
"Mom, are you okay?" Lu Duoduo asked nervously, stepping back a bit. Was her mom's anger causing her to lose her mind?
Mother Lu secretly rolled her eyes at her and pulled her into the living room. Sitting on the sofa was a woman in a white off-shoulder dress, with slightly curled long hair, exuding elegance and charm. So there was a guest; no wonder her mom's attitude had done a complete 180!
Mother Lu smiled brightly like a blooming peony. "Duoduo, come meet this is your Uncle Fang's daughter. She works for one of the world's top 500 companies and just returned from abroad. She's quite impressive; you should learn from her."
Just as Lu Duoduo sighed in relief, she caught the biting tone in her mother's last sentence and quickly took over the conversation. "Hello, sister."
"Just call me Jingyi," Fang Jingyi said with a graceful smile as she stood up. "So you must be Duoduo. You really resemble your brother."
"Uh-huh, do I?" Lu Duoduo laughed awkwardly, secretly thinking that as a vibrant sunshine girl, she looked nothing like that icy mountain of a brother. Wait a minute—there's a beautiful woman at home, and her mom is being very warm toward her. She knows Lu Lichen; could it be that Fang Jingyi is going to be her future sister-in-law?
As if to confirm her suspicions, the doorbell rang. Lu Lichen, dressed in a black suit and exuding an air of confidence, walked up to her with a serious expression. "Didn’t I say I would come to pick you up? Why did you come here first? You didn’t answer your phone, Lu Duoduo, you’ve really grown bold."
The cold glare struck Lu Duoduo right in the heart. She lowered her head to look at her toes, not daring to retort.
Fang Jingyi smiled and intervened, "Duoduo just wanted to get home sooner, right? Li Chen, you shouldn’t be so harsh on the young lady."
It seemed that Lu Lichen only then noticed her. He nodded slightly and said, "Miss Fang, when did you arrive? I’m truly sorry for making you wait. Please, have a seat."
"Yes, yes, don’t just stand there. Li Chen, you keep Jingyi company and have a good chat. Duoduo and I will go prepare dinner. Jingyi, you must stay and try your aunt's cooking today," Mother Lu said, looking increasingly pleased as she watched them standing together, her face beaming with joy.
"Okay, thank you, Auntie," Fang Jingyi replied softly, her shyness evident in the way she lowered her gaze.
