"Go on, go eat your rice. I just have a craving and wanted you all to share a bit with me; it's not like I'm reluctant to part with it."
Everyone burst into laughter and got busy again.
During dinner, she instinctively divided the Crab Roe Rice into two portions, one larger and one smaller. Everyone was used to this by now, as Liu Juan always did the same when she was around. However, usually, Yue Qing would scold Liu Juan for eating too much while simultaneously piling her plate with more food.
Everyone knew she was a person of contradictions, and they teased her, saying it was nice of her to finally let her daughter enjoy good food. At such moments, Liu Juan would shyly urge her mother not to serve her so much and encourage everyone to eat together.
Thinking of Liu Juan made Yue Qing's smile fade slightly. It had been two days since she left, and there hadn’t been any word from home. She pretended not to care and smiled lightly at everyone, saying, "That child has been gone for two days without a word; she must be having too much fun with her dad."
Everyone nodded in agreement, telling her not to worry.
"Qing Jie, your daughter is so capable; getting into such a good university means you can just sit back and enjoy life."
"Yeah, if my brat could achieve even half of what your Liu Juan has, I’d wake up laughing from my dreams."
"Your Liu Juan is truly talented; don’t stress about it. She's grown up and deserves her own space now."
Yue Qing smiled but remained silent. Inside, she couldn’t shake the feeling that it was unusual for Liu Juan to be out for two days without sending a message.
After finishing dinner and tidying up the shop, she lay down on her bed.
Yue Qing opened the chat window with Liu Juan and read through their conversation several times. She wanted to send Liu Juan a message but didn't know what to say. Should she ask when Liu Juan would be home? Should she inquire why Liu Juan hadn't sent any word to the family while she was out? Should she tell her how much she missed her?
But Yue Qing hesitated, fearing that Liu Juan might find her annoying or think that Yue Qing was incapable. Even the Crab Roe Rice that Liu Juan loved could only be bought secretly for her. With a sigh, she set her phone down and closed her eyes, preparing to sleep.
Tossing and turning, sleep eluded her, and she picked up her phone again, checking repeatedly for new messages. There were none. Gritting her teeth, she finally mustered the courage to call Liu Juan. The phone rang for a long time, but no one answered.
A flicker of disappointment crossed her face, but she quickly reassured herself that Liu Juan was probably already asleep. Glancing at the clock, it was half-past ten; at this hour, Liu Juan should indeed be in bed. Yue Qing forced a nonchalant smile and put her phone down, attempting to sleep.
The next day, Yue Qing called her grandparents early in the morning to ask if Liu Juan had returned home. Hearing their denial made her face go pale. She immediately opened the tracker on her phone and discovered that Liu Juan's phone was at Xushui Manor.
Xushui Manor belonged to Wei Ran, the Prince of the Wei Family. Trembling, Yue Qing called Wei Ran to confirm he was out of town before sneaking in through the back entrance of the estate. The manor was vast, but thankfully the tracker on her phone was precise, leading her quickly to a secluded patch of lawn within the grounds.
As Yue Qing looked at the freshly dug earth before her, her heart raced with trepidation.
She crouched down, using both hands to push aside the dirt, and finally saw her daughter's body. No, to be precise, it was a mutilated body. Yue Qing could no longer hold back; tears surged forth, and her heart ached so much that she could hardly breathe.
With trembling hands, she lifted Liu Juan's disfigured body and gently draped a piece of clothing over her. Cradling her, she walked step by step toward the car, placing her in the back seat and covering her face with the garment.
Yue Qing did not call the police. Instead, she drove home and took her to the underground storage of the Clothing Store. After performing a simple preparation for Liu Juan, she laid her in a painted refrigerator.
Only then did Yue Qing begin to investigate who was responsible for her daughter's death.
