Darkness, chaos. The sharp whips sliced through the air again and again, tearing flesh from the frail body, leaving no part unscathed. The wounds burned fiercely, not just from the pain of flesh being cut and seared, but also from the stinging saltwater that lingered in the air. Blood flowed continuously from the swollen belly.
"It is already the final deadline, and he still hasn't come." "Kill." Who spoke with such a cold and ruthless voice? It sounded so familiar.
Suddenly, a light appeared before Su Ruolan. She saw a woman being whipped, her body covered in blood and filth. A tall man wielded a Japanese Longsword, raising it high above the woman's swollen belly before bringing it down to pierce through the fetus inside her. The six-month-old fetus had already taken on a human form; it was clear it was a boy. The woman on the ground watched in horror as the tall man reduced her child to a bloody pulp, her eyes wide with rage and despair. She coughed up large clots of blood but could not utter a word, her mouth revealing a half-formed tongue.
"Decapitation of Youcheng displayed for ten days to completely undermine his prestige."
As her head was severed from her body, an overwhelming wave of Hatred surged forth. Su Ruolan finally broke through that thin mist and saw those eyes filled with Hatred. They were so familiar; they were her own. She realized she was already dead; what remained was her soul.
"Are you willing?" A Mechanical Voice echoed.
Of course not! How could she be willing? The deep-seated hatred was etched into her very being.
"Do you regret it?" The Mechanical Voice asked without pause.
Though she had suffered torment and persecution leading to her death, she felt no regret—only deep guilt. The innocent life within her had not deserved such a fate; it should not have met this calamity and been denied peace, forever unable to enter reincarnation.
"Do you still have any attachments?" After a moment, the Mechanical Voice asked again.
Of course she did; she wanted to see him one more time, to tell him that their eldest daughter was missing and they had to find her.
And she must tell him that he could not be trusted; he was a devil.
I want to go back to see him!
I want to go back!
"How can I go back?" Su Ruolan, having weathered many storms, quickly regained her composure and asked coldly.
"You can go back, but it will come at a price. There is no such thing as a free lunch," the Mechanical Voice replied, its tone flat yet carrying a hint of ruthlessness.
"I will give everything I have to return," Su Ruolan said with a bitter smile, her determination unwavering.
"Remember your promise, as you wish."
A surge of power swept over her, engulfing Su Ruolan's soul. Even after enduring tortures like disembowelment and decapitation, she could not withstand the excruciating pain of her soul shattering piece by piece. The strong-willed Su Ruolan could not help but scream.
"Ah!" Startled by the piercing sound, she opened her eyes and found herself reborn.
No longer surrounded by endless darkness and blood, she was now beneath a milky-white ceiling with white fluorescent lights.
As she moved her body, she felt an overwhelming heaviness and was hit by a strong smell of blood. Struggling to sit up, she was shocked to discover that she was in a bloody scene. Corpses of both humans and Zombies littered the area. Some Zombies were gnawing on humans, while others were being slain by humans wielding swords. There were also humans embracing Zombies in a mutual destruction, and some half-bodied humans crawling on the ground with their abdomens torn open. All were frozen in an eerie stillness, as if death had struck suddenly and frozen everything in place. Su Ruolan finally understood why she felt so heavy; a human corpse lay slumped across her legs, its left hand clenched into a fist pressing against her chest, making it hard for her to breathe.
Pushing the dead body away, Su Ruolan checked her injuries. Aside from feeling weak, she found no serious wounds, but her clothes were soaked in blood, obscuring their original color and reeking of the metallic scent.
Suddenly, a sharp pain pierced through her head as memories that did not belong to her flooded in like scenes from a movie. The girl who had been reborn as Su Ruolan was named Shu Ruolan. She was the daughter of a teaching family from J City and had just started college at eighteen years old when the apocalypse struck. Returning home for summer vacation, she never expected the Earth to undergo drastic changes; many people became infected with a virus and turned into Zombies. Her parents were not spared either.
In their final moments of consciousness, Shu's parents chose to jump from a building into the river while embracing a Zombie, leaving behind their last words urging Shu Ruolan to survive and find her brother Shu Ruo Lan.
Devastated by the loss of her parents, Shu Ruolan awakened her Ice Ability and later joined the Ability team in J City. This mission involved escorting important figures to N City, but they encountered disaster along the way and met with total annihilation.
"Since I have been reborn as your daughter," Su Ruolan vowed internally, "I will live well for both of us, find my brother Shu Ruo Lan, help him, protect him, and carry on the Shu family's bloodline."
Su Ruolan remembered that when she died it was two years into the apocalypse; now it was four years in. From Shu Ruolan's memories, she learned that many changes had occurred during those two years. The greatest catastrophe was known as Dark Thirty when Earth's temperature plummeted drastically. Many areas dropped below minus eighteen degrees Celsius, leading to the freezing deaths of hundreds of millions due to scarcity of resources like water and electricity. Now, the sun had just returned to its normal cycle after ten days of rising and setting again, with surface temperatures slowly climbing back to thirteen degrees Celsius. Since most of her activities had been centered around J City, Su Ruolan's information was quite limited.
Checking her Ability status, Su Ruolan discovered that this body’s Ice Ability had reached level two. For most ordinary people, this level was already quite impressive; it held considerable influence even in mid-sized bases while larger bases operated with authority. Even in her past life, despite having family resources for cultivation, she had only managed to reach level two Ice Element Ability.
A wave of heat surged through Su Ruolan's chest, and she felt dizzy for a moment. When she regained her senses, she realized she had been pulled into a room no larger than twenty square meters.
"Welcome to Zero Space, my new master," a Mechanical Voice echoed.
"It's you." Su Ruolan was astonished to find the voice very familiar; it was the same one that had questioned her three times while she was unconscious.
"What is happening?" Su Ruolan asked.
"Due to the blood sacrifice, I have formed a soul contract with you. I was originally a spirit of space, sealed within the bloodline of my previous master. Only when his direct descendants possessed pure Yang blood could the seal be broken. Originally, my master should have been your son. However, due to insufficient nutrition during your pregnancy, he drew upon your Ability for sustenance, which unexpectedly led to your Ability being depleted. As a result, he was captured and met with misfortune. Yet, by using your Ability as nourishment, he awakened his spiritual intelligence ahead of time. In his final moments, he infused a drop of his blood into your body, breaking my seal and preserving your soul. The gem that Team Shu Ruolan is escorting is actually a stone for soul restoration. It harmonized with our energy field after absorbing your Heart's Blood, allowing me to draw all its energy so that you could be reincarnated." The Mechanical Voice succinctly explained the situation.
Although Su Ruolan had many questions about this, she felt reassured knowing that the space would not harm her. She asked the most pressing question: "Is Bao'er still alive? Can he come back?"
"He currently has only a drop of blood left. To bring him back, you must continuously grow stronger. Once you can fully master this space, you will find a way to revive him. Remember, you only have one chance. If you die again, then all three of us will vanish into nothingness," the Mechanical Voice warned solemnly.
"Understood. I will become stronger," Su Ruolan replied solemnly.
"What shall I call you from now on?"
"Reset."
Su Ruolan understood part of the truth but knew it wasn't the time to delve deeper.
With a thought, Su Ruolan exited the space and began contemplating her future path. Just then, the previously motionless Zombies and human corpses suddenly shattered into fine dust, scattering everywhere. Among the fallen dust lay several pure white Cores—Energy Stones! It was evident how fierce the previous battle had been; Common Zombies did not form Cores; only evolved Zombies could condense them.
Su Ruolan collected all the Cores and sent them into storage within her space with a thought; this was her first asset. Compared to before, she felt utterly impoverished. The urgent matter at hand was to find food quickly. The Ice Element Ability she awakened in her previous life and her Ice Ability in this life meant that Su Ruolan wouldn't need to worry about drinking water for now.
The once dark and cramped space became spacious after the bodies disappeared, resembling a giant maw revealing its chilling white teeth in unseen places.
As Su Ruolan walked down the stairs, they twisted up and down. Along the way, she saw several doors; although there were no lights in the passageway, there were glowing strips on the doorknobs and corners of the walls that allowed her to see about five meters ahead. She tried to open those doors but found them unyielding; they seemed merely painted onto the wall. With no choice but to abandon that effort, she continued down the stairs. Fortunately, there was only one direction for the stairs without any forks.
After walking for about fifteen minutes, Su Ruolan finally spotted a faint light ahead. Her spirits lifted as she quickened her pace, discovering that there was a half-open iron door above her. With all her strength, she pushed upward and jumped, finally crawling out of the underground chamber.
Looking around, Su Ruolan found herself surrounded by piles of rusty scrap metal. The exit of the basement was relatively hidden; without careful searching, one would never have noticed it.
Stepping out of the abandoned warehouse, Su Ruolan observed numerous buildings around her, varying in height and seemingly arranged with care. However, every building's exterior was mottled and worn, some having partially collapsed to reveal exposed steel and concrete that jutted sharply toward the sky.
To her right stood a dark three-story building with a half-broken sign swaying in the air, faintly revealing the words "Spring Rain Supermarket." Su Ruolan took a moment to sense her surroundings; there was no movement, so she cautiously approached the supermarket.
The supermarket door was slightly ajar. Su Ruolan gently pushed it open, stepping inside to find an eerie silence. Several shelves near the entrance had toppled over, and bags of food were scattered across the floor. The shelves deeper inside stood straight, holding a sparse assortment of items.
Su Ruolan gathered a large quantity of high-calorie food such as compressed biscuits, canned goods, and chocolate, filling nearly eighteen square meters of her storage space. Regrettably, she had to leave some behind. To her delight, she found tools like flashlights and scissors in the hardware section on the first floor and collected quite a few. Moving to the second floor, she encountered clothing, bags, and shoes. She selected several items and placed them all into her storage space. Unfortunately, it was still too limited for everything she wanted. After some thought, Su Ruolan chose a large backpack and returned to the first floor.
As she was putting food into the backpack, a sudden roar of car engines erupted outside, growing louder as it approached. The screeching sound of tires against the ground pierced through the air. Su Ruolan quickly found a shelf to hide behind. Just as she crouched down, the door was kicked open with force.
A group of armed men entered, led by a man approximately 185 centimeters tall. He wore camouflage military attire and had a stern expression that radiated an aura of sharpness like a sword drawn from its sheath.
He scanned the area before raising his hand; a sleek handgun appeared in his palm almost instantly. "Come out," he commanded.
The dark muzzle of his gun pointed directly at Su Ruolan's hiding spot.
