I began preparing for the task of infiltrating the Multinational Corporation servers. On the surface, I was fully committed, but in reality, I was secretly gathering every possible clue.
I noticed that several key points in this infiltration plan were strikingly similar to the "Ghost" virus incident. This made me increasingly convinced that "Shadow" was closely linked to that disastrous event two years ago.
Just as the mission reached a critical stage, I received an urgent communication from Captain Wang.
“Li Ming, we have new intelligence,” Captain Wang's voice was laced with anxiety. “'Shadow' may have infiltrated the government systems of multiple countries. The situation is far more serious than we imagined.”
I furrowed my brow. “Are you sure this intelligence is reliable?”
“It came from our deep cover operative, codename ‘White Cat’. But after relaying this message, we lost contact.”
My heart suddenly raced. I knew who ‘White Cat’ was—that was Anna's codename. Two years ago, she had gone missing during that operation, and everyone believed she had sacrificed herself.
“Anna is still alive?” My voice trembled slightly.
There was a moment of silence on the other end. “We’re not sure,” Captain Wang finally replied. “But if it’s true, she could be in extreme danger right now. Li Ming, I know this is hard for you, but we must prioritize the mission.”
I took a deep breath, forcing myself to calm down. “I understand. Is there anything else I need to know?”
“Be careful of the individual codenamed ‘Shadow 0259’. We suspect he may be a high-ranking member of 'Shadow.'”
“Got it.” My hands began to tremble involuntarily as Anna's smiling face flashed before my eyes. For two years, I had lived with guilt and regret, haunted by countless nights dreaming of Anna calling for help while I remained powerless.
Now, the spark of hope was reignited, but with it came a greater fear—what if this was all just a cruel trick?
After hanging up the phone, I sat in front of my computer, my mind racing. The news that Anna might still be alive filled me with both excitement and dread. But now, I had to focus on the task at hand.
Returning to the Dark Web, I continued with my hacking plan. Just as I was about to breach the final defense, a warning suddenly popped up on the screen:
"Unknown intruder detected. Initiating emergency protocol."
My heart sank. This was not part of the plan. I quickly activated my backup program, trying to cover my tracks.
At that moment, a private chat window appeared.
[Shadow0259]: "Impressive skills, Phantom Hacker. Or should I call you Li Ming?"
My blood ran cold. My true identity had been exposed.
[Phantom Hacker]: "Who are you? What do you want?"
[Shadow0259]: "You've passed our test. Now, let's talk about the real deal."
Immediately, a string of complex code appeared on the screen. To my astonishment, it was a far more advanced encryption system than I had anticipated.
[Shadow0259]: "Crack this, and you'll know the truth. About 'Shadow', about the 'Phantom' virus, and even about Anna."
Seeing Anna's name, my heart nearly stopped. I took a deep breath and began to decipher the mysterious code. As layer after layer of encryption was broken, an astonishing fact gradually came to light:
"The Shadow" is not just a simple criminal organization. It is a secret alliance composed of the world's top hackers, aimed at exposing corruption within governments and large corporations. The "Phantom" virus incident was, in fact, a misunderstood warning action.
What shocked me even more was the discovery that Anna might have voluntarily joined "The Shadow." The last message she left read:
"Li Ming, if you see this, please believe me. The truth is not what it seems on the surface. We are doing the right thing."
I sat in front of my computer, feeling dizzy. I had always thought I was investigating a dangerous criminal organization, but the reality was far more complex than I had imagined.
[Shadow 0259]: Now you know. The choice is in your hands, Li Ming. Will you continue to be a pawn kept in the dark, or will you join us in exposing the truth?
I stared intently at the screen, my mind caught in an unprecedented struggle.
