Just as I was choking on the smoke and struggling to open my eyes, a hand suddenly grabbed my wrist. That touch, that grip—I recognized it instantly. "Come with me," said a voice I had longed to hear. It was Anna, the real Anna! My heart skipped a beat, but this wasn't the time for excitement.
We escaped the café and jumped into a car that had been waiting for us. The vehicle sped away.
"I'm sorry, Li Ming," Anna panted, a flicker of guilt and worry in her eyes. "I had to meet you this way. That imposter was sent by the Shadows. They knew you were looking for me, so they set this trap." I could feel the tremor in her voice; she must have endured unimaginable torment over the past two years.
"I discovered a shocking secret," Anna whispered urgently. "But it's too dangerous to talk about it now. I need more evidence. It's infiltrated networks worldwide, including governments and the Shadows." Li Ming gasped.
If this were true, then the threat we faced was far greater than we had imagined.
In the following week, Anna and I met in secret, meticulously planning our next moves. We decided to simultaneously breach the government's secret database and the core system of the Shadows, gathering enough evidence to expose everything at a carefully chosen moment.
Using the Hard Drive Captain Wang had given me, I created a more powerful program. This program could not only monitor and collect data but also incapacitate entire systems at critical moments.
Meanwhile, we did not overlook threats from all sides. I continued to stay in touch with Captain Wang and Shadow 0259, carefully navigating between both parties.
Finally, the day of action arrived.
That early morning, I sat in our secret base, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. Anna maintained contact with me through encrypted communications.
"Are you ready?" Anna's voice came through my headset.
I took a deep breath. "I'm ready to start at any time."
I pressed the Enter key, and a cascade of complex code flowed across the screen like a waterfall. Taking a deep breath, I launched the meticulously prepared program. Multiple windows popped up on the screen, each displaying different progress bars.
My program was simultaneously launching a multi-threaded attack on both the government and the "Shadows," using distributed computing to divert their attention while searching for potential breakthroughs.
At first, everything went smoothly. Li Ming successfully breached multiple firewalls and began collecting critical data. But just as he was about to reach the core area, disaster struck.
"Li Ming, we've been detected!" Anna's urgent voice came through, "Someone is tracing our signal!"
My fingers flew over the keyboard as I tried to shake off our pursuers. However, their technical skills were clearly top-notch, closing in on us step by step.
Suddenly, my screen went black, and a line of blood-red text appeared:
"Game Over!"
Immediately after, a familiar voice echoed through the computer speakers:
"Li Ming, you have disappointed me." It was Captain Wang's voice.
My heart sank to the depths. We might have fallen into a carefully designed trap from the very beginning.
"Anna, retreat!" I shouted as I activated the emergency deletion program.
But it was too late. I heard sirens blaring outside and hurried footsteps approaching. We were surrounded.
At that critical moment, a line of text suddenly appeared on the screen:
"Li Ming, quickly use 'Phantom Protocol!' — Shadow 0259"
I was taken aback for a moment, then realized what it meant. 'Phantom Protocol' was an emergency escape program I had previously embedded in the "Shadow" network, capable of generating a large amount of false data in a short time to conceal my true whereabouts. I had originally intended to use it against "Shadow," but now it had become my lifeline.
Without time to think further, I swiftly activated 'Phantom Protocol'. In an instant, the entire system fell into chaos. Alarms blared in succession, and all tracking signals were interrupted.
Seizing this opportunity, I grabbed the escape backpack I had prepared earlier and fled through the secret passage out of the base.
When I finally reached the designated rendezvous point, I saw Anna already waiting for me.
"What happened?" Anna asked, her eyes filled with concern.
I shook my head. "The situation is far more complicated than we imagined. We’ve been set up, Anna. But now is not the time to explain; we need to get out of here quickly."
Just as we were about to leave, my phone suddenly vibrated. It was an encrypted message from Shadow 0259:
"Remember, in this game, no one is completely innocent. The truth lies at the center of the maze. We will meet again."
