I glanced at the computer screen. The data transfer was complete, but unplugging the USB drive now would surely raise suspicion.
At that moment, I noticed the ventilator on the desk suddenly flicker with a red light.
Almost simultaneously, the entire building's power system went down. The alarm pierced the night, and the backup power kicked in, but all electronic access controls were forcibly opened.
"Damn it!" Li Wei cursed. "What’s going on?"
Seizing the opportunity, I kicked over the desk with all my might. In the darkness, Li Wei instinctively fired a shot, but the bullet went wide.
“He's trying to escape!” Li Wei shouted into the radio. “Everyone, catch him!”
Using the faint glow of the emergency lights, I moved quickly along the wall. Zhang Lei's urgent voice crackled in my earpiece: “Don’t take the elevator! They’re definitely lying in wait there. Head for the emergency staircase; I’ve hacked into the surveillance system and can guide you.”
“Something’s off,” I said as I ran. “Wasn’t this power outage your doing?”
“No,” Zhang Lei replied, confusion evident in his voice. “Someone else breached the system before me—very professional work.”
It seemed that the Cleaner was at it again. He appeared to have been observing events from the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment to intervene.
I dashed through the corridor and turned a corner; ahead was the emergency staircase. But before I could breathe a sigh of relief, a shadow suddenly lunged at me from the side!
Instinctively, I sidestepped just in time, and the shadow crashed against the wall with a dull thud. In the dim light, I caught a glimpse of my assailant’s face—it was the person who had just spoken with Wang Zhiyuan!
Just as I was about to counterattack, I suddenly heard a sharp "crack." The gun in the man's hand fell to the ground, and he collapsed heavily. Behind him stood a figure wielding an electric baton.
"Follow me," the person said. Their voice had been altered, but I recognized it immediately—it was the "Cleaner" from the phone!
"Who are you?" I asked.
"There’s no time to explain," he replied, pulling a USB Drive from his pocket. "Take this; it contains all the evidence you need. Including the financial transactions of Li Wei and Wang Zhiyuan, as well as their evacuation plans."
I hesitated for a moment before taking the USB Drive. "Why are you helping us?"
"Because I’m a victim too." His voice turned bitter. "Two years ago, Li Wei set a trap that left me destitute. Since then, I've been secretly gathering evidence. Now, it's finally time for them to pay."
In the distance, hurried footsteps echoed. "Cleaner" shoved me forward. "Hurry! I'll hold them off. Remember, you must give the evidence to the police; we can't let them..."
Before he could finish, a bullet flew from the end of the corridor and struck his shoulder.
Without thinking, I grabbed him and ran toward the Emergency Staircase. Behind us, Li Wei's frantic shout rang out: "After them! Don't let them escape!"
"Bang! Bang!" Gunshots echoed in the stairwell. Bullets hit the concrete walls, sending sparks flying.
I half-supported, half-dragged "Cleaner" down the stairs. Blood was pouring from his shoulder, and his breathing grew heavier.
"Don't worry about me," he gasped. "The evidence is more important... you need to go..."
"Shut up!" I snapped. "At this point, no one gets to play the hero."
Zhang Lei's urgent voice came through the headset. "There are six guards in the lobby on the first floor, and four more in the underground parking lot. You need to find a way to jump out from the second floor!"
"He’s injured; he can't jump," I said, glancing around. Suddenly, I spotted the fire hydrant on the wall. "Wait, I have an idea."
