"All cameras have switched to playback mode," Zhang Lei's voice echoed in the headphones. "You have a 20-minute window."
At 4:18 AM, Qin Yu and I slipped through the ventilation duct from the underground parking lot. Li Jun's team was already positioned outside, ready to provide support at a moment's notice.
"Can you still walk?" I asked, steadying Qin Yu, concerned about her injuries.
"Don't worry about me," she gritted her teeth and pushed forward. "We don't have much time."
Reaching the elevator lobby, Qin Yu pulled out the chip. It was a device no larger than a fingernail, yet it represented two years of her hard work.
"Remember, once you enter the control room, you only have 10 minutes," Zhang Lei reminded us. "Any longer and the system will detect anomalies."
The elevator took us directly to the third basement level. As the doors opened, a rush of cold air hit us. The entire floor was dominated by massive server units, emitting a faint blue glow.
"Three years..." Qin Yu gazed at the machines with a complex expression. "It's still the same here."
Arriving at the control room door, Qin Yu placed the chip against the identification panel. The indicator lights flickered a few times before the door slid open.
But someone was already waiting for us inside.
"I knew you would come," Wang Zhiyuan sat at the console with a bitter smile on his face. "Qin Yu, long time no see."
"You knew we were coming?" I asked warily.
"From the moment Li Wei fled, I have been waiting," Wang Zhiyuan sighed. "In fact, I have always been waiting for this day."
He stood up and walked to a monitor. "Look, this is Li Wei's complete plan. He not only wants to control the Origin Awakening World, but also intends to manipulate the Global Financial Market using this platform. And I was just a pawn in his game."
"Why are you telling us all this?" Qin Yu asked.
"Because I want to end it all," Wang Zhiyuan said with a bitter smile. "For years, I've watched Li Wei slowly devour this platform, powerless to stop him. Until today, I finally have a chance for redemption."
He pressed a button, and all the screens in the control room lit up. "The complete control of the servers has been handed over to you. The source code for the Self-Destruct Program is here; you should be able to find a way to disable it."
Qin Yu and I exchanged glances, both struggling to believe what we were hearing.
"Why now..."
Before I could finish my sentence, a gunshot interrupted us. A spray of blood erupted from Wang Zhiyuan's chest as he staggered and fell to the ground.
"What a touching scene," Li Wei clapped his hands as he emerged from the shadows. "Too bad I despise those who turn traitor at the last moment."
A dozen fully armed men surrounded the control room from all directions. Li Wei's eyes were filled with malice. "The game is over. This time, no one will stop me."
"You've been waiting here all along?" I positioned myself in front of Qin Yu.
"Of course," Li Wei replied with a smug grin. "Did you think I would just run away? This is my home turf. That coward Wang Zhiyuan ultimately betrayed me. But it doesn't matter; everything is back on track now."
He walked up to the console and skillfully entered a series of commands. "So, surprised?" Li Wei raised the remote control in his hand. "I was planning to wait until the system update to pull the plug, but since you’ve come knocking, let’s get started now."
On the large screen, the countdown for the Self-Destruct Program suddenly accelerated. What was originally three hours turned into just thirty minutes in an instant.
"You've lost your mind!" Qin Yu exclaimed. "If you trigger it early, the entire system will collapse!"
"And so what?" Li Wei sneered. "Chaos is the best opportunity. When the Global Financial Market plunges into panic, my other plan will unfold smoothly."
