As Anthon was about to step out of his room to find Haohao, the phone suddenly rang. An incoming call with no caller ID made him feel uneasy. Yet, he had a strange intuition that he had to answer it.
Standing by the bed, Anthon trembled all over from the situation. His palms began to sweat, and his fingertips felt numb. Taking a deep breath, he finally decided to pick up the phone, raising it to his ear and whispering, "Hello?"
Silence greeted him on the other end, punctuated only by faint static. Anthon's heart raced, and his breathing quickened. Just as he was about to ask again, a deep voice with a hint of rasp came through, "Mr. Anthon, I didn't expect you to pick up so quickly."
Anthon's heart skipped a beat; the voice felt both unfamiliar and dangerous. He tried to steady his voice, "Who are you? What do you want?"
A light chuckle echoed from the other side, carrying an unsettling quality. "Mr. Anthon, you must have received that email by now. Haohao's condition should be worrying you."
Anthon's fingers tightened around the phone, knuckles turning white. Fear and anger surged within him. "What have you done to him?"
Another chuckle followed. "Mr. Anthon, there's no need to be so tense. We just want you to understand that Haohao is currently in our control. If you cooperate, everything will go smoothly."
Anthon's voice trembled as he asked, "What do you want?"
The person on the other end laughed mockingly, their voice distorted and sinister through the voice changer, sounding as if it came from the depths of hell, sending chills down Anthon's spine.
"Mr. Anthon... there's no need for hostility," the person said slowly and coldly. "In some ways, we are allies rather than enemies. I have something I want... and you... you have something you value and care about too, right? Haohao?"
Anthon's heart tightened painfully; his fingers shook from the strain. A wave of intense fear and anger intertwined within him, but he knew he had to remain calm and not let the caller see his fear.
"What do you want?" Anthon's voice quivered but he fought to sound composed.
"It's simple," the man's voice grew deeper, laced with a hint of threat. "You must follow our instructions without any resistance. Otherwise, Haohao's situation will only worsen."
Anthon felt a wave of despair wash over him; he couldn't imagine what kind of suffering Haohao might endure. But he knew he could no longer hesitate; he had to find a way to protect Haohao.
"Alright, I understand. Please don't hurt Haohao." Anthon took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down.
The man's eerie voice continued, addressing Anthon: "As for allies... I can grant you the right to ask one question... Go ahead."
Countless questions flooded Anthon's mind, his confusion over last night's events leaving him agitated. He realized that understanding what had happened yesterday might help him mitigate everything Haohao had gone through. He quickly pondered, trying to pinpoint the most crucial question to ask this strange voice.
Images from last night flashed in his mind—Haohao's vacant eyes and unsettling smile captured in videos and photos. Anthon understood that this person must have been present at the scene, whether as a witness or participant; they knew the truth.
Taking another deep breath, he tried to steady himself. He knew this was a rare opportunity and needed to tread carefully. He whispered, "You were there last night, weren't you? Tell me, what exactly did Haohao go through?"
The person on the other end chuckled lightly, their voice tinged with mockery. "Anthon, you're quite clever. Yes, I was indeed at the scene last night. As for what Haohao experienced... what you saw was merely the tip of the iceberg."
Anthon's heart tightened with fear and anger. "Then tell me, what really happened last night? What did you do to Haohao?"
There was a moment of silence before the man spoke softly. "Last night, Haohao underwent an extreme trial—a 'baptism' meant for him. Those images were just to make you understand that he is now under our control. As for the details... you don't need to know that much."
A sense of helplessness and despair washed over Anthon. He knew this person wouldn't easily divulge more information. Forcing himself to remain calm, he tried to extract more clues from their conversation: "What exactly do you want from us? Why treat Haohao this way?"
The man on the other end laughed. "Oh... Anthon, didn't we agree on just one question? However... considering we have plenty of time ahead to work together... I'll show some mercy and answer you again."
Anthon tightened his grip on the phone, his heart racing with a flicker of hope. He knew this was a rare opportunity, and he had to seize every detail. The voice on the other end cleared its throat and coldly said, "Da Shewan wants to gain complete control over Haohao—body, mind, and spirit. I believe you must have noticed Da Shewan's... peculiarities by now."
Anthon recalled every interaction he had with Da Shewan, filled with doubt and fear. He remembered Da Shewan's unnaturally enthusiastic demeanor, those veiled glances, and the excessive attention directed at Haohao. Everything seemed to point to a deeper conspiracy.
"Yes, I've sensed something off about Da Shewan for a while," Anthon replied quietly, trying to mask his inner terror. "But I didn't expect him to be this extreme."
"Haha, Mr. Anthon, you are too naive," the voice on the line chuckled, laced with mockery. "Da Shewan's intentions are more complex and dark than you can imagine. His obsession with Haohao has surpassed ordinary understanding. He aims not only to control Haohao's body but also to destroy his spirit and will, forcing him into complete submission."
A chill crept up Anthon's spine as his fear intensified. He realized that both he and Haohao were facing an unpredictable crisis, and he had to find a way to thwart Da Shewan's plans.
"What should I do?" Anthon forced himself to remain calm, trying to extract more clues from this bizarre conversation. "How can I protect Haohao?"
The person on the other end chuckled softly, their voice carrying a hint of coldness. "Mr. Anthon, that depends on your wisdom and courage. All I can tell you is that Da Shewan is not an easy opponent. You need to be cautious; do not let him discover your intentions. Remember, our goals align—if you obey, Haohao will be safe."
