Yama's Wedding
The warm sunlight soon illuminated the land, and Xue stood at the doorway of the classroom, the sun casting a glow on his face, with his long eyelashes creating a slight shadow.
"Sir, I've brought Tiger here, this little rascal," boomed Aunt Qiao as she dragged Tiger over to Xue.
"Mom, let go of me! It's embarrassing for the sir to see me like this. Let me go!" Tiger struggled in Aunt Qiao's grip, but his strength was no match for hers, and he could only be dragged along.
"Oh dear, sir, my little rascal just listens to you. Only here can he behave himself," she said. Ever since this teacher arrived in the village, the children had been much less mischievous, and they were learning knowledge as well. The villagers were thrilled; they didn't know what made this teacher so special, but even Aunt Qiao herself enjoyed being around him, feeling an inexplicable sense of security.
Through the sunlight, squinting at the lively mother and son before him, Xue noticed how different they looked compared to the lifelessness of the previous night.
Xue discreetly rescued Tiger from Aunt Qiao's grasp. "Aunt Qiao, don't worry. Tiger will be fine with me. You can go about your business."
"Alright then, I'll be off. Tiger, make sure you listen carefully to the sir," Aunt Qiao reminded before leaving.
Xue led Tiger into the classroom, and the round-headed boy was shaking his head vigorously. Suddenly inspired, Xue secretly cast a soul-chasing spell into Tiger's palm.
Unexpectedly, this casual action revealed something surprising to Xue.
Tiger lacked a soul within him; it was completely absent.
Humans are able to exist independently from immortals, gods, demons, and monsters because they possess Three Souls and Seven Spirits. The Three Souls reside in the spirit while the Seven Spirits are tied to the physical body. Thus, when a person dies, the Three Souls return to their respective paths while the Seven Spirits dissipate with the body.
In a person, there are Three Souls: one is the Soul, the second is the Earth Soul, and the third is the Fate Soul. There are also seven Spirits: the first Spirit is the Vital Spirit, the second is the Wisdom Spirit, the third is the Qi Spirit, the fourth is the Strength Spirit, the fifth is the Central Spirit, the sixth is the Essence Spirit, and the seventh is the Heroic Spirit.
The Soul represents Yin, while the Spirits represent Yang. Among the Three Souls and seven Spirits, each can be further divided into Yin and Yang. In the Three Souls, the Soul is Yang, the Earth Soul is Yin, and the Fate Soul is again Yang. Among the seven Spirits, both the Vital Spirit and Earth Spirit are Yin, while the Human Spirit is Yang.
Among the Three Souls, the Earth Soul often resides externally, while only the Fate Soul remains solitary. The Earthly Fate of the Three Souls does not often gather together. Among the seven Spirits, two are Spirits of Yin and two are Earth Spirits, with three being Human Spirits; they correspond to each other in Yin and Yang and never separate, often attaching themselves to a person's body.
However, within Tiger's body, the Fate Soul is incomplete, and the Human Spirit has already vanished. Essentially, a person should be a harmonious blend of Yin and Yang flesh; yet at this moment, Tiger has only Yin remaining without any Yang.
According to reason, such a human should be lost in confusion and unable to survive a day; however, clearly, Tiger does not appear to be so.
Xue quietly retracted his soul-chasing spell.
As noon approached, Xue had explored all his students' bodies; they were all like Tiger—lacking complete souls.
Could it be that these children were possessed or had their souls consumed? Or was everyone in this village like this?
Xue expanded his spiritual awareness; a faint golden light spread across every corner of the village. Soon he discovered something: nearly all of the villagers' souls were incomplete—except for Aunt Qiao!
At that moment, Aunt Qiao was at her stall introducing her embroidery to others. Could she be behind this? Quickly dismissing that thought, Xue concluded that humans themselves are weak and likely lack such capability. However, Aunt Qiao certainly raised suspicion; it seemed he would need to investigate her thoroughly.
Just then, Xiuzhu happened to walk by. "Xiuzhu, you..." Before he could finish his sentence, he saw Xiuzhu walk past him without a glance or any sign of attachment. This was completely different from how she used to treat him. Could it be because of yesterday's words that Xiuzhu had become so indifferent? Xue felt he might not understand humans as well as he thought.
"What’s going on?" He had told himself not to pay attention to her but seeing her slightly dejected expression made it hard for him to ignore her. Although his tone was hurried, he couldn't help but ask her. Xiuzhu felt truly helpless regarding her teacher.
Watching Xiuzhu turn around and come back to face him, Xue felt completely bewildered. No matter what, it was most important to ask the questions he wanted answers to.
"Do you know about Aunt Qiao's family?"
At that moment, Xiuzhu felt that she should not have stopped. The way she looked at Xue made him seem like a lecherous scholar. The girl’s fleeting affection came quickly and left just as fast, which reflected Xiuzhu's feelings towards Xue.
After he asked that question, Xue noticed that Xiuzhu's gaze towards him seemed filled with disdain, yet there was also a hint of sympathy.
Finally, under Xiuzhu's compassionate gaze, Xue managed to conclude this uncomfortable conversation. Before leaving, Xiuzhu patted his shoulder, a symbolic gesture of comfort.
According to Xiuzhu, Aunt Qiao and her husband had been villagers living here for generations. They grew up together and were very much in love after getting married. However, when Tiger was three years old, Aunt Qiao's husband unfortunately fell gravely ill. Despite consulting many doctors, he ultimately passed away, leaving Aunt Qiao and Tiger to rely on each other. At the time of her husband's death, Aunt Qiao was still quite young; even after being married, she was considered the most beautiful woman among the nearby villages. Many suitors came to persuade her to remarry, but Aunt Qiao never agreed. There were even some from other villages who tried to force her, but they were driven away by the villagers. It had only calmed down in recent years.
Seeing Xue's interest in Aunt Qiao's situation and his extra care for Tiger in daily life, Xiuzhu assumed he had developed feelings for Aunt Qiao. Thus, she looked down on him and felt sympathy for his unrequited affection. However, Xiuzhu's worries were unfounded.
Gathering his thoughts, Xue sensed that there was nothing particularly special about Aunt Qiao from Xiuzhu's perspective. Yet his intuition told him that Aunt Qiao might be a breakthrough point. He decided to visit Aunt Qiao’s home later that night to investigate further.
