The 50th birthday celebration of Minister Wen Xingyun should have been a lively and joyous occasion, filled with happy guests. However, today was destined to be tumultuous and unsettling.
On one side, the Legitimate Son was causing a ruckus, shouting and nearly coming to blows, while on the other side, a princess was attacked by assassins in her residence. These consecutive incidents made Wen Xingyun's mood fluctuate wildly, like a roller coaster.
He furrowed his brow, filled with confusion, pondering to himself: Given Yun Qingyu's explosive and violent nature, with so many distressing events occurring in Wen's Mansion today, it would be exceptionally merciful if she didn't wipe out the Wen Family entirely.
As he thought this, Wen Xingyun felt increasingly alarmed. He discreetly glanced at Yun Qingyu from the corner of his eye and wondered: What could have caused someone with such a fierce temperament to suddenly become so gentle?
Seeing that Yun Qingyu seemed to be relatively unharmed, he let out a slight sigh of relief, though his heart remained uneasy.
"Your Highness, rest assured. The guests are in Water Cloud Pavilion, which is quite a distance from the study. As long as we don't send anyone to inform them, they shouldn't know what has happened here," Wen Xingyun said while wiping the beads of sweat from his forehead.
Yun Qingyu remained silent, turning instead to look at Xin Yao, who stood nearby.
Dressed in black, Xin Yao had her eyes slightly lowered, her face unnaturally pale. The calm demeanor she usually possessed had vanished, and she was trembling slightly.
Yun Qingyu felt a pang of concern; it dawned on her that Xin Yao was afraid. She gently placed her hand on Xin Yao's trembling one and spoke softly, "Xin Yao, the master is injured and bleeding; this is the shadow guard's negligence."
At the sound of her master's call, Xin Yao slowly raised her gaze. Her eyes were filled with an unmistakable emptiness and fear, resembling that of a startled fawn.
Yun Qingyu hadn't anticipated such a strong reaction from Xin Yao. She smiled gently and said, "It was my oversight; it has nothing to do with you. I won't hold you accountable."
Looking down at the hand that Yun Qingyu held and at the princess's warm smile, Xin Yao felt a surge of warmth fill her heart. A blush crept onto her cheeks as all her anxious emotions gradually dissipated in that moment.
After a long while, he finally gave a slight nod, the movement almost imperceptible. "Yes."
Wen Xingyun looked at the several horrifying corpses on the ground, still feeling a lingering fear. He turned to Yun Qingyu and asked nervously, "Princess Consort, how should we handle these bodies?"
Yun Qingyu replied with an indifferent expression, "Find a deserted place and burn them."
Wen Xingyun quickly nodded and hurriedly arranged for the servants to move the bodies.
Once everything was in order, he solemnly said to Yun Qingyu, "Regarding the assassin incident, I will definitely provide Your Highness with an explanation. It is my fault that you were frightened; I deserve to die a thousand deaths."
Yun Qingyu merely glanced at him, her tone flat. "As for the assassin matter, this palace will investigate it. You need not worry too much."
Suddenly, a startled voice came from not far away. "My lord, something bad has happened! The Eldest Son and several young masters have beaten the Second Young Master!"
Upon hearing this, Wen Xingyun felt his heart drop and was overwhelmed with exhaustion.
He helplessly shook his head, lamenting inwardly: How could such a joyous birthday banquet be plagued with one disaster after another?
Those reckless young masters had not only offended the Eldest Princess but also brought assassins to attack her, nearly costing her life.
Now, even his pride and joy, the Legitimate Son, was causing trouble at this moment. Truly, misfortunes never come alone!
