On the third day, the exams came to an end. Students from the four graduating classes gathered in the square of the County Guesthouse, where Principal Rong Zhijie delivered his final farewell speech.
The old man spoke with less admonition and more tenderness and nostalgia:
"Dear students, today marks our farewell, and your three years of Junior High School Life have officially come to an end! In the future, you will surely cherish these thousand-plus days, as will your teachers!
Regardless of whether you continue your studies at a higher institution or step directly into society, I hope you all prioritize being good people!
I wish for you to soar higher and, even more so, to venture further!"
His speech was brief but was met with enthusiastic applause. Among the crowd, some girls began to wipe their eyes...
—Ah, how we will miss our youthful days!
Graduation had arrived. Those who excelled in their studies awaited their high school acceptance letters with beautiful dreams, while those who struggled began reaching out to schools for a chance to repeat a year. Others, resigned to their fate of not advancing academically, prepared to follow their parents' plans and head towards Social University.
After returning from the Entrance Examination, Hu Ruoyun first went to Township to return Shaoying's camera. He told Shaoying, "Brother Shao, there’s still a lot of Color Film left in the camera that hasn't been used. Your Photo Studio can continue using it. Just develop the part I took after you're done... but those photos must not be shared with anyone!"
His mysterious demeanor left Shaoying puzzled.
Seeing the expensive camera returned safely brought relief to Shaoying. He also learned that the film was not yet exhausted and readily agreed to help develop it as soon as possible. He adamantly refused the ten yuan Hu Ruoyun offered for the developing fee: "Don't be ridiculous! Do you think my Photo Studio would close down over ten or eight yuan? Just come back in three days to pick up your photos!"
Two days later, Brother Biao rode his Twenty-Eight Bar Bicycle from Xiong Family Village, eight miles away, to find Hu Ruoyun. Clueless at first, he asked, "How did you manage to take down those guys so easily by yourself that day? When did you get so good? And how did you end up following us?"
If Brother Biao had asked this question at the time of the incident, Hu Ruoyun would have struggled to come up with a suitable excuse. Now, five or six days later, Hu Ruoyun had already thought of a response: "Hey, if you heroically save the beauty, am I not allowed to stand up for my brother? We've been classmates and desk mates for three years. When I saw you getting beaten, I just wanted to help you. Who knew those guys were so weak? The one leading the charge got a punch to the eye and lost all courage to fight back, so the rest didn't dare to continue."
Brother Biao was a straightforward person who often read novels about chivalrous heroes. He was also very loyal. After hearing Hu Ruoyun's answer, he was moved to tears and threw his arm around Hu Ruoyun's neck. "Exactly! Who are brothers if not for each other?" He completely failed to realize that Hu Ruoyun's response had sidestepped some crucial points.
Before Hu Ruoyun could go to Township Shaoying to collect the photos, Shaoying rode over on his father's motorcycle. The three of them squeezed into Hu Ruoyun's small room. Shaoying pulled out a paper bag from his pocket, filled with freshly developed photos. He laid them out one by one and nervously asked his two classmates, "Tell me what happened here?"
In the photos, several small thugs with crooked features were dragging and pulling at their male classmate's "goddess." Brother Biao was shown on the ground, bloodied and beaten by "Black Tower." The most terrifying image was of Dog Young Master viciously raising a Triangular Bayonet aimed at Brother Biao, delivering a strong visual impact.
Hu Ruoyun and Brother Biao recounted the situation to Shaoying, nearly dropping his jaw in shock. "Is this really happening? These guys are way too bold; they are completely out of control!"
Suddenly recalling something, Shaoying looked at Hu Ruoyun suspiciously. "How do you know..."
Before he could finish, Hu Ruoyun interrupted him directly. "What do I know? It was just a coincidence! I was supposed to make a trip to the county town and take some photos for fun; who knew I ended up taking pictures of those two..."
