Su Nian took a deep breath, straightened her back, and returned to the center of the exhibition hall. With a faint smile on her face, she raised the champagne in her hand and nodded slightly to the guests around her. "Thank you all for coming today, and for your support," she said sincerely, her gaze sweeping over familiar and unfamiliar faces.
Lin Weiwei walked up beside Su Nian, grasped her hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze. "It's okay, Niannian, don't worry," she comforted, a hint of teasing in her tone. "Gu Tingchen's 'hero saving the beauty' act was really quite handsome." At this, Su Nian felt a blush creep onto her cheeks; she shook her head lightly, a complex emotion flickering in her eyes.
"Miss Su, are you alright?" Qin Mingyu had somehow appeared in front of Su Nian, concern etched on his face, his gaze holding a barely perceptible tenderness. "What happened earlier was truly infuriating." He paused before adding, "If anything like this happens again, you must tell me. I will protect you." His tone was firm, his eyes burning with intensity. Su Nian smiled faintly and skillfully shifted the topic. "Thank you for your concern, Mr. Qin. When is your new movie coming out? I'm really looking forward to it." Her tone was light, though her eyes betrayed a hint of evasion.
" Niannian, are you okay?" A sharp voice cut through the air. Su Nian turned to see Zhao Shufen approaching her with an anxious expression. Two servants followed behind her, carrying various supplements. A cold laugh bubbled up inside Su Nian, but she maintained an impassive facade. "I'm fine, thank you for your concern, Mom," she replied coolly, her eyes devoid of warmth.
Zhao Shufen reached out as if to take Su Nian's hand but was deftly avoided by Su Nian. " Niannian, I know I haven't been good to you in the past and have been too harsh," Zhao Shufen said with a hint of pleading in her voice. "But now Jingxuan has..." She paused, unable to continue, simply gazing at Su Nian with longing.
"Let the past be the past," Su Nian interrupted coldly. "I just want to focus on my career now." With that, she turned and walked towards other guests, ignoring Zhao Shufen completely. Zhao Shufen stood frozen in place, her face shifting between shades of green and white before she could only leave in disappointment. The servants hurried to catch up; one accidentally bumped into a display stand, causing a soft sound to echo through the hall. The lights in the exhibition reflected off the crystal chandelier above, scattering tiny sparks of light.
After the exhibition ended, Su Nian declined Lin Weiwei's suggestion to go home together and drove back alone to her apartment in the city center. She opened the door and stepped into the living room, placing her bag on the sofa. The apartment was quiet except for the faint sounds of city life filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. She approached the windows and looked down at the brightly lit cityscape below, lost in thought.
Everything that had happened today replayed in her mind like scenes from a movie: Lu Jingxuan's accusations, Gu Tingchen's appearance, the reporters' siege, Zhao Shufen's feigned concern... All of it left her feeling utterly exhausted. She rubbed her temples gently as mixed emotions swirled within her. Her slender silhouette was reflected in the window glass, appearing somewhat lonely and desolate.
Finally, she picked up her phone and dialed Gu Tingchen's number. "Hello?" His deep voice came through the line with an almost imperceptible warmth. Su Nian gripped her phone tightly; her knuckles turned slightly white. "Gu Tingchen..." she said softly, hesitation lacing her tone.
"It's me." Su Nian took a deep breath and tried to keep her voice calm. "Thank you for today..." She paused as her gaze fell on the flickering neon lights outside. "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't know what to do." She bit down on her lower lip unconsciously while absentmindedly rubbing the phone case with her fingertips.
"Just a small favor," Gu Tingchen replied in his low voice but with a hint of amusement. "I'm just glad you're okay." He paused for a moment as if contemplating something before asking, "Has the exhibition ended? Would you like to grab some late-night snacks together?"
Su Nian hesitated briefly; instinctively wanting to refuse but somehow found herself agreeing instead: "Sure." After saying it so readily, she realized how straightforward she had been; warmth crept into her cheeks as she felt slightly embarrassed. The lights in the apartment cast a glow over her figure, accentuating her graceful curves.
"I'll come pick you up," Gu Tingchen said cheerfully before hanging up without waiting for Su Nian's response. She set down her phone and walked over to the wardrobe to change into a cream-colored knit sweater while tidying up her hair in front of the mirror. In reflection, there was a glimmer of anticipation mixed with an almost unnoticeable tension in her eyes.
Downstairs, a black Maybach idled by the curb as Gu Tingchen sat inside; his long fingers lightly tapped on the steering wheel while his gaze remained fixed on the entrance of the apartment building. The streetlight filtered through the car window casting shadows across his chiseled features. Moments later, Su Nian appeared at the entrance of the apartment building wearing a cream-colored knit sweater that made her look exceptionally gentle; her long hair cascaded over her shoulders as it danced lightly in the night breeze.
