Just as I was thinking, the door to the interrogation room opened again. But this time, it was someone I never expected.
"Long time no see, Xiao Yang."
I looked up sharply, nearly biting my tongue. "Minister Chen?!"
Ten years ago, when I first started in the industry, Minister Chen was just an ordinary Director at the City Environmental Protection Bureau, often helping me arrange interviews. Later, he transferred to the Provincial Office, and then moved on to the Ministry of Environmental Protection. We hadn't been in touch for years.
"What are you doing here..."
"I'm here specifically to save you," he gestured for me to follow him. "You've gotten yourself into big trouble."
In the corridor, those arrogant Investigators saw Minister Chen and all stepped aside respectfully. Once we got into the car, he let out a sigh of relief.
"I always thought you were too stubborn; it seems I was right," he handed me a cigarette. "We've been keeping an eye on this case for a long time."
"We?"
"The Environmental Protection Agency Task Force." He lowered his voice. "Li Wanqing is our undercover agent; he has been safely relocated. But..."
"But what?"
"The last message he sent back was strange." Minister Chen frowned. "He said that the true purpose of Oasis Environmental isn't money laundering; it's..."
A large truck suddenly burst out from the roadside and crashed heavily into our vehicle!
I woke up in the hospital. My head had twelve stitches, and my whole body felt like it had fallen apart. Minister Chen was in worse shape; three of his ribs were broken, and he was still in the ICU.
"You're finally awake," Old Ma said, relieved as he stood by my bedside. "You scared me to death; the car was completely wrecked."
"What about the Editor-in-Chief?" I struggled to sit up.
"Don't worry, he's safe. Those people did intercept him on the way, but the data on the USB drive has already been sent out." Old Ma lowered his voice. "While you were unconscious these past two days, I found out some things."
He pulled out a stack of photos from his bag. "Look at this. Two years ago, Oasis Environmental's earliest investor—Golden Source Investment—was registered under the name Wan Changhe."
That name jolted me awake. "The former deputy director of the Provincial Environmental Protection Department?"
"Yes, the one who was arrested last year for corruption. But what's even more interesting is..." Old Ma pointed to another photo. "Take a look at this person."
The photo was a surveillance screenshot from a private club. Zheng Mingyuan was chatting happily with a middle-aged man wearing glasses. That man was none other than the 'investigation team leader' who had interrogated me just two days ago.
"His name is Zhao Zhiming. On the surface, he works for the Environmental Protection Agency, but in reality, he is Wan Changhe's trusted aide," Old Ma said. "He has been managing Wan Changhe's assets all these years."
The clues finally connected! I suddenly recalled what Minister Chen had said—the true purpose of Oasis Environmental was not money laundering. Indeed, if it were merely about laundering money, there would be no need for such a complicated environmental scheme.
"Old Ma, can you find out what those companies they acquired are doing now?"
"This..." he hesitated for a moment, "many companies turn into industrial land after they are deregistered. In the past two years, those lands have all been sold off at prices several times higher than the surrounding areas."
"Who bought them?"
"The buyers are different companies, but..." Old Ma opened his notebook, "I've noticed a pattern. Most of these lands are close to the planned subway lines and new districts, and..."
Before he could finish, the door to the hospital room was suddenly pushed open. A person who looked like a nurse walked in: "Mr. Yang, it's time for your injection."
Old Ma's expression changed: "No, it's not time for an injection..."
I immediately understood and pushed the "nurse" aside. The syringe in her hand fell to the floor, and the liquid inside was not ordinary medication!
Old Ma and I held her down tightly until security arrived to subdue her. But just as we were about to call the police, the "nurse" suddenly struggled and pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket: "Don't call the police! Let me give this to Reporter Yang..."
