The line of investigation immediately shifted.
If, just if, there is a connection between these three Strangulation Cases, then from that connection, someone's suspicion could certainly be strengthened.
After all, the victim was the Deputy Master Luo of Wanzi Mountain; this matter could not be taken lightly. Therefore, Luo Dachun and Han Meilan, along with the Information Broker, were dispatched down the mountain to search for clues. To uncover something valuable, they would inevitably have to deal with the Official Authorities once they descended. It would be impossible to accomplish this without some sharp-minded individuals.
It seemed that the capabilities of Luo Dachun and Han Meilan had been fully recognized. As for me, being a carefully crafted vase girl, I naturally couldn’t help with anything. So my assigned task was simply to “not run around, stay indoors, and take good care of myself”!
Ah! How frustrating! At such a time, I clearly wanted to be on the front lines. While pursuing a gentleman might seem more important, I had to admit that the blood within me was boiling! Only at moments like this does one realize that the desire for certain things is as irresistible as fate itself.
Although I wasn’t sure what exactly it was, being restrained while maintaining a delicate smile was simply infuriating.
“What’s wrong? Can’t hold back anymore?” The man lounging on the edge of my bed leaned against the wall and asked me with a hint of sarcasm in his sultry voice.
I jolted awake, all sleepiness gone.
Night Phantom! He really came! This was absurd!
Last night I had prepared by improvising some gloves and masks, then packed everything I could think of—knives, flint, paper and pen—into a bag. I had put together a set of night gear, brought along the dagger gifted by Night Phantom, and even prepared a pouch of anti-wolf lime powder.
Yes, I boldly decided to go alone. I figured that since people were already dead, the Murderer probably wouldn’t return to tamper with the bodies. I had grown accustomed to corpses; they held no terror for me.
The only thing that frightened me was how crazy this world was; there could be ghosts too. I wasn’t afraid of people or corpses or anything that could be explained by scientific principles. However, when it came to supernatural forces and strange phenomena, I had no immunity whatsoever.
This reminded me of an occasion when Zhang Yang and I went to investigate a scene. By the time I arrived, the body had already been dug up from the ground and was in a horrific state. I was already immune to such sights and stepped forward without hesitation.
Zhang Yang spoke ominously from behind, "Do you know how this corpse was found?"
I looked at him in shock, as his voice suddenly took on a chilling tone. Theoretically, he was a person full of vitality, with a rather masculine appearance, but at that moment, for some reason, he seemed to be shrouded in a layer of dark mist.
He glanced at the Male Corpse surrounded by a group of people, his voice inexplicably carrying an electric undertone.
"Last night, his mother had a dream. She dreamed that he sent a message saying that if she threw a piece of paper here on this Mountain Peak and chased after it, she would find him. When she woke up, she called the police and nearly drove us mad. But the old lady insisted on coming. So the two of us accompanied her to throw the paper. And guess what? Where the paper landed..."
They really dug it up!!
This was absolutely true; I had seen it with my own eyes. Otherwise, I wouldn't be so terrified. The cases released by the police were all logically sound and reasonable, but during the investigation process, there were indeed many mysteries that could not be explained no matter what. This was something ordinary people didn't know.
I felt a jolt of static electricity surge through me, raising every hair on my body. I felt particularly cold, my legs slightly weak; for the first time, I didn't dare to move closer. At that moment, my lips must have been pale.
Zhang Yang shot me a disdainful glance, raised an eyebrow, and lowered his voice to say, "Shoulder, can I lean on you?"
I took a deep breath, extended a hand in a gesture for "sp," and said, "Please let me calm down. So, teacher, could you please stop joking around at this time!"
The Future Police Flower took a long time to overcome this psychological barrier. However, this was the mysteriously profound Tang Dynasty; who knew what other strange things might happen? In an instant, images of rising corpses, white-haired corpses, blood zombies, and Big Zongzi flashed through my mind like slideshows, making me regret not packing two Black Donkey Hoofs in my bag.
In reality, I had prepared my bundle and gone to bed early to gather enough energy for a midnight venture to meet Big Zongzi under the cover of darkness. However, I had slept quite soundly and felt well-rested; if it hadn't been for the man beside my bed suddenly speaking up, I truly wouldn't have woken up.
In ancient times, there were no mobile phones or alarms—nothing at all!
"Get up already, it's almost dawn."
I rolled over and sat up, asking, "What time is it?"
"What do you mean?" the handsome guy replied.
"Oh..." I felt a wave of embarrassment for using such alien phrases without thinking. I was so unaware; if I were an undercover agent, I would have been caught by now. Just imagine how terrifying it would be if the person in front of me wasn't Night Phantom, but Nie Qiuyuan instead?
"What I mean is... what time is it?"
"So that's what you call it!" Night Phantom smirked, speaking to himself with curiosity. "Hmm, it's just past the third watch."
You arrived just in time.
"You called me here for what?"
"I want you to accompany me to a place and handle something."
"Sure, let's go!"
I couldn't help but feel a bit puzzled. "Aren't you going to ask me where we're going or what we're doing?"
"It doesn't matter," Night Phantom said nonchalantly. "Besides, whatever you want to do seems quite interesting."
I was momentarily at a loss for words.
“Bai, the Vice Hall Master of Zhongtong Hall has been hanged. I want you to accompany me to see his body; something feels off about this,” he said.
Night Phantom nodded. “Yeah, I know. And I can tell you what feels off.”
I looked at him in surprise.
He smiled mischievously. “What are you looking at? Qiu Yuan told me.”
Qiu Yuan!
“You guys…” Once again, I failed to predict this outcome. I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words.
“What’s so strange about it? We’re close friends!”
This time, I truly felt like I could spit blood. How could I be so foolish? How could I not think of this? I thought I had encountered a trustworthy stranger and even revealed some of my true self to him. But he was not a stranger at all!
I had gone to great lengths to guard against Luo Dachun and Han Meilan, only to find that his connection was even closer than theirs!
I was done for…
“What’s wrong with you?” Night Phantom looked at me in surprise as tears streamed down my face. He paused for a moment before suddenly pulling out a plain white handkerchief and hurriedly began wiping my tears. “Why are you crying? There’s no one else here; you don’t need to pretend…”
"What have you done to him?" I sniffled and glared at Night Phantom.
"Why should it matter to him?" Night Phantom looked at me in surprise. "You're so good at pretending; isn't it just that you don't want anyone to know what kind of person you really are?"
"You'll never understand how much I've suffered just to be near him... But with a single word from you, everything could be easily destroyed!" I felt tears welling up.
Night Phantom paused for a moment, his gaze suddenly softening. He gently asked, "Is he the one you love...?"
I didn't answer.
Suddenly, Night Phantom raised his hand as if taking an oath and said solemnly, "Zhenzhen, don't worry. If I ever tell him your secrets, let me be struck by lightning!"
Just as he finished speaking, a loud clap of thunder echoed through the clear night sky, startling both of us.
Outside, heavy rain began to pour down.
