Chen Shou pulled out a cloth stained with an unknown substance and began wiping his face vigorously. The lifelike wrinkles seemed to vanish as if erased by an eraser, gradually revealing smooth, elastic skin. Before me, he unfastened his clothing, and the sound of cracking bones echoed as his stature seemed to grow taller.
I stared at him in astonishment. This must be the legendary Disguise technique and the art of body shrinking!
The Registrar, Chen Shou, transformed in the blink of an eye into a handsome man with a warm smile. However, the clothes he wore were too large; all the buttons had come undone, exposing his firm and well-defined chest muscles. It was simply… devilishly tempting.
"What are you looking at?" Ren Pingsheng asked with a grin. "You can't hide your thoughts in your eyes!"
My guard suddenly went up, and I shouted, "Who exactly are you? You've been deceiving me since last night, and now you've brought me here—what do you want?"
Ren Pingsheng clicked his tongue. "Who am I? Don't you know your Brother Qiu Yuan well enough? Do you think he was just talking nonsense?"
"What about Lord Chen?" I suddenly felt genuine concern for the real Chief Clerk.
"Oh, him? He’s just sleeping in today. Nothing to worry about; he’ll come around once he wakes up."
"What are you really here for?"
Ren Pingsheng's smile faded slightly as he looked at me. "He’s not here, but I came to clear things up. However, I didn’t kill him. Hmph, do you really think I can’t find out who lured him into betrayal? That’s just a dream. But my purpose for coming to this county office isn’t about that. I wanted to see you."
"See me?" I felt puzzled. I hadn’t shown any particular skills before this.
"But it seems he hasn’t treated you well," Ren Pingsheng said meaningfully. "A man hitting a woman is simply despicable; it’s truly contemptible!"
A surge of anger rose from deep within me; I couldn't tolerate any slander against Nie Qiuyuan, even though I was the one who had been struck.
However, Ren Pingsheng was clearly highly skilled; in a flash that I could barely comprehend, he appeared right in front of me. In an instant, my vision blurred as he twisted my neck and pulled me into his embrace.
I didn’t know which pressure point he had pressed, but my entire body felt numb and heavy; I couldn’t move at all. My face was pressed against his bare skin, and an overwhelming scent of masculinity assaulted my senses.
The scent was not unpleasant; in fact, it had a faint hint of incense. Yet, for some reason, my heart suddenly raced, and the hairs on my body stood on end. My body instinctively sensed a smell, one that was extremely dangerous.
Beneath that light fragrance lay a heavy stench of blood, emanating from deep within the bones!
A man leaned close to my ear and spoke softly, “I can’t bear to watch anymore. You should know, I never hit women. I always kill them directly.”
A chill ran down my spine just as I was abruptly lifted by Ren Pingsheng. “Ah Ying, sleep for a while. I’m taking you away.”
Before I could process his words, I somehow fell asleep.
I don’t know how long it was before I felt like I had endured countless nightmares, struggling for what felt like an eternity before finally waking up.
I found myself lying on the floor of a sealed room. The space was only about ten square meters, with no doors or windows and no ventilation. Yet somehow, lights were steadily lit on the walls, and for some reason, I hadn’t suffocated.
“Awake? You really can sleep,” a calm voice came from above me.
In my mind, I imagined leaping up like a fish breaking the surface, but in reality, I could barely lift my ankles. My entire body felt weak; I could hardly even turn over.
However, I still saw Ren Pingsheng leaning against the wall beside me, a hint of mockery in his smile.
He had changed into luxurious dark blue attire, exquisitely crafted with intricate embroidery and tasteful decorations. Wearing such fine clothing transformed Ren Pingsheng’s demeanor; that gentle and bright smile now carried an air of nobility mixed with a touch of wickedness.
“Ah Ying,” he said, “I actually feel it’s quite a pity. Let me ask you one more time: will you come with me? If you do, you’ll understand my advantages.”
“Pah!” I spat out a single word through clenched teeth.
Ren Pingsheng chuckled softly. “Will your Brother Qiu Yuan come to rescue you?”
In My Heart, a chill ran through me.
So this was his true intention!
Ren Pingsheng's target was never me; it was Nie Qiuyuan.
I scoffed coldly, "How could he possibly come to save me? Did you not see how he treated me? He only sees me as a burden and would rather I die sooner!"
"Is that so?" Ren Pingsheng replied. "Then Ah Ying, let's put it to the test. Outside is the Nine Palaces Eight Trigrams Formation. If Qiu Yuan cannot break it in time, you will be in serious trouble. Oh, and this lock has its own peculiarities."
I turned my head away and ignored him.
Ren Pingsheng sighed, propping my body up and gently holding me in his arms for a moment. "To be honest, I feel a bit reluctant."
He leaned my body against the wall and stood up, clapping his hands as he did so. With lightning speed that I couldn't follow, he struck several points on the wall, and miraculously, a Five Elements Formation Diagram appeared. Then, a door sprang open.
"Goodbye, Ah Ying." Ren Pingsheng glanced back at me before stepping out confidently, the door closing swiftly behind him.
I slumped against the wall, horrified to see eight holes opening up in the ceiling, water beginning to pour down relentlessly.
Until that moment, I had still been in disbelief that Ren Pingsheng intended to take my life.
I had been far too naïve.
Streams of water shot in from the holes. It turned out this room was underwater. At this rate, it wouldn't be long before the entire room filled with water, and I would drown here in despair.
Suddenly overwhelmed by fear, I realized I truly did not want to die—especially not by drowning. Drowning is not only excruciating but also leaves your body floating in the water until it swells grotesquely, distorting your features into something monstrous. Oh my God!
I used all my strength to crawl toward the nonexistent door, pounding on the wall and shouting, "Ren Pingsheng! I've figured it out, I'm willing to go with you! Come back and let me out!"
In short, I needed to save my own life first!
But all that remained in the room was the sound of running water; Ren Pingsheng had already left, and he couldn't hear my cries.
The water quickly rose above my neck. I stood up using buoyancy, desperately paddling.
What a pity, is this how my life ends? Just when I was starting to get familiar with everything...
The water carried me to the rooftop, and tears streamed down my face, melting into the water.
As I struggled again, I could no longer breathe.
Just as I was about to lose consciousness, the spot where the door should be—the Five Elements Formation Diagram—suddenly shone brightly like starlight. A miraculous door opened, and the water surged toward it. In the flow of water, I seemed to see a winged being approaching me, embracing me and pulling me toward that door.
The door slammed shut behind me, cutting off the water flow. Everything around me was pitch black until fresh air suddenly rushed into my nostrils, filling my lungs.
I coughed violently, expelling a mouthful of water that splashed all over the being holding me.
