“Liuying, actually, I've had you in my heart for a long time…” Nie Qiuyuan said, blushing and stammering for a while before finally managing to utter those words.
Oh my gosh! What should I do? I've waited so long for this, and he really said it! What should I do now?
I felt so excited, as if there was a fire burning inside me. I've had a crush on you—not just for one or two years, but for eight years, a full eight years!
My heart was on fire, my face was burning, my whole body felt like it was ablaze. What am I going to do?
I'm going to melt!
“Liuying! Why are you still sleeping? Wake up quickly!”
I was startled awake by the voice and opened my bleary eyes. Oh, it was just a dream—what a disappointment! The contrast is so jarring!
Melan's face was right in front of me. “Get up, hurry! There's a fire!”
Huh?
I shook my head vigorously, finally waking up completely. Looking around, I noticed everything outside was red; no wonder it was so hot!
Then I remembered that we were staying on the second floor of an inn. It seemed that the inn was on fire.
I jumped out of bed in a hurry. Ancient buildings were all made of wood, and fire spread quickly with the wind. In the brief moment since Han Meilan had rushed in to call me, flames had already surrounded the room.
I glanced into the hallway and realized it was clearly impassable. I quickly closed the door and propped a chair against it.
“Jump out the window!” I said decisively.
"Go first!" The woman had a determined look on her face, and that expression only made me angrier.
"Stop talking! Just go!" I impatiently used all my strength to push her toward the window. "Jump, don’t block me!"
Even though I was annoyed with her, she had risked herself to wake me up, causing us to miss the best chance to escape. I couldn't just let her die.
As soon as I kicked her out of the window, it felt like a cruel joke when two pillars from the roof suddenly collapsed, blocking the window completely.
I heard Han Meilan outside screaming, "Liuying! Liuying!" Her voice sounded like a wail of despair. Thick smoke began to seep in through various cracks, choking me and making it hard to breathe. The room was getting hotter, like a blood-red hell.
Instinctively, I bent down and pressed myself against the floor, searching for an escape route while tearing off a piece of bed sheet to wrap my hair. Then I took out the "mask" from my pocket, soaked it in the basin by the washstand, put it on my face, and drenched myself with a basin of water.
After doing all this, I realized that with my strength, I couldn't move those beams. The corridor was definitely not an option; that would be like asking for death. If I couldn't break through here either...
Would I burn to death?
That thought finally struck fear into me. Burning to death was one of the most terrifying ways to go—not only painful but also leaving no trace of what I looked like afterward. Oh my God!
I pulled out Night Phantom's knife from my pocket and began trying to dig through the obstacles at the window. But it seemed beyond my capabilities, and smoke started pouring in from outside; it looked like things were burning out there too.
Despair slowly enveloped me. As I dug desperately, I forced myself to make a decision. If I still couldn't break through in a little while and the fire came in, then I'd use this knife to end it all. I wasn't sure about hitting my heart, but I knew exactly where my carotid artery was; if I applied enough force, it should be a quick death without much pain.
Just then, the roof collapsed with a loud crash. I rolled back in fright, barely avoiding the flaming wooden tiles that fell down.
Along with the debris came someone dressed in black, their brow furrowed tightly—it was my ally.
Nie Qiuyuan relaxed when he saw me curled up in the corner. Without a word, he took two steps forward and lifted me effortlessly onto his shoulder. Before I could react, I felt dizzy and disoriented, as if I were on a roller coaster, my stomach churning. After about thirty seconds, a refreshing breeze filled my nostrils, and I realized he had leaped with me to a safe place.
I exhaled deeply, understanding that it was his strength that had brought me to safety. My heart settled in my chest, only to start racing again. It had been so hot earlier, and fearing that the flames might burn my clothes, I had stripped down quite a bit. Now, I was left wearing nothing but a modern three-piece bra and panties, a mask covering my face, and a bedsheet wrapped around my head.
I wondered how he recognized me in this state. However, it was somewhat strategic; even though I was exposed, my face was covered well enough that no one could tell who I was.
Yet, despite the urgency of the situation, with him carrying me on his shoulder, his hand rested on… well, that was my backside!
He stood there for a minute, holding me in silence. The wind had turned cold quickly, making me feel as if I had just been taken out of a microwave and shoved into a refrigerator. I felt both cold and embarrassed, too shy to move.
Suddenly, Nie Qiuyuan exclaimed "Ah!" and loosened his grip, nearly dropping me to the ground. I let out a sharp scream as he hurriedly caught me again and gently set me down.
I noticed his face, usually as pale as jade, had turned bright red. This was the first time I had seen him blush like this; it brought an unexpected freshness to the moment that made me momentarily forget how disheveled I looked and how my own face beneath the mask was likely just as flushed.
Nie Qiuyuan quickly turned away and removed his outer coat to hand it to me while stammering, "Liu Ying, I promise I didn’t see anything!"
His nervousness instantly dispelled all my panic and shadows of fear, calming my emotions rapidly. So you have this side too; it's somewhat endearing. The way he spoke didn’t resemble him at all; it reminded me more of Night Phantom.
I put on his coat, which enveloped me in the scent of autumn and made my heart race anew. His clothing was oversized and baggy, trailing on the ground and emphasizing our height difference.
I untied the bedsheet and removed my mask, switching to a softer tone as I said gently, "Brother saved me; if it weren't for you, Liu Ying would have been done for today."
I saw Nie Qiuyuan's shoulder tremble slightly before he returned to normal. When he turned back to face me again, he resumed his calm demeanor.
“Liuying! Are you alright?” Two figures rushed towards us. Luo Dachun glanced at me, disheveled and wearing a loose Dark One robe, and let out a long sigh. “It’s good that you’re okay.”
But the woman beside him lunged forward and hugged me tightly, crying and sniffling, her tears and snot smearing all over my idol's clothes, which made me furious. Han Meilan clutched me tightly, sobbing, “Liuying, you scared me to death! You scared me to death! You did all this to save me! What if something happened to you…”
I patiently patted her back, feeling goosebumps rise as I said, “It’s fine, I’m okay! It’s all over now!”
Just then, a heart-wrenching wail came from the burning inn in the distance: “Brother! I’m useless, I’m so sorry!”
At that moment, I felt a wave of sadness wash over me.
I regret to inform everyone that the double update has come to an end for now. Starting tomorrow, there will be one update daily at 1 PM! (Letting out a quiet sigh of relief)
The silly author hopes to write more, but time and ability are truly lacking. So for now, I can only guarantee one update each day. I’ll do my best to write 000 words with all my effort and a spirit of determination…
If anyone has some free time, may I shamelessly promote my other book “National Medical Hall: Water Moon Record”? It’s a romance with elements of martial arts and intrigue, but overall it can also be considered a grand mystery. I’ve put a lot of heart into that one, and my own idol appears in it too. In some ways, it’s an existence that I cannot surpass—like first love. (What a shameless advertisement)
Now, let me be even more shameless and drop the link!!
That’s enough for now; there will be another update tonight at 6 PM.
