Modern Investigation Tracking with a Police Dog, but in ancient times, tracking with butterflies?
Come on, it's almost December; it should be snowing heavily by now. There shouldn't be any butterflies alive, right?
"This is my method of tracking, something I've spent many years researching. This butterfly is special; it's very sensitive to the scent of a certain Synthetic Drug. So, if there's someone I want to track, all I need to do is leave a trace of this drug's scent on them, and the butterfly will help me find them. However, it can't be too far away."
"You put the drug on me?"
"Yes."
"You..."
I was at a loss for words. Usually, this guy is always around when needed; although his words can be harsh, he’s reliable and harmless. Who would have thought he would secretly do something to me?
Forget it; considering he saved my life today, I won't hold it against him.
"I went to the White Horse Temple today as well. Later, when Su Liche came with some case details, I was listening nearby. But then I noticed you were missing. I know you're not the type to wander off randomly, so I immediately released the tracking butterfly and followed you."
He really knows everything. But where exactly was he hiding?
"Later, I found out that Ruo Chanjuan had captured you, and I also saw Ren Pingsheng."
A surge of anger welled up inside me: "Then why didn't you come out to save me? I almost died!"
As soon as the words left my mouth, I regretted them. Night Root had no obligation to save me; even if I had died, it wouldn't have been his concern. Moreover, he had just been injured while trying to save me.
But for some reason, my mood, my depression, my bad temper always instinctively wanted to lash out at him. He would mock me and ridicule me, yet everything I threw at him he accepted without complaint, and only now did I realize this.
He is the only person in this world with whom I can treat so casually, the only one from whom I can completely lower my guard—a unique individual. In an instant, I suddenly felt lucky to have encountered such a peculiar person.
Night Phantom chuckled lightly: "Save you? Is that necessary? You seem pretty fierce; you don't need anyone to save you."
"Actually, you were trying to find this hidden point, weren't you?" I suddenly realized, a surge of resentment rising within me. I had become a big bait!
"I can't predict the future to know who took you away. However, you’re not wrong. After seeing Ren Pingsheng, I thought it might be worth following to see where this hidden point of Mirror Gate is located. So, I came along."
Night's smile faded, and his expression turned serious.
"Ren Pingsheng is not alone; there are several skilled individuals lurking around him, just not showing themselves. Moreover, unless absolutely necessary, I prefer that the people from Mirror Gate do not see my appearance. After all, I am essentially a shadow, and the less contact with Mirror Gate, the better."
So that was why he had been silently tracking me, only revealing himself when my life was genuinely in danger.
But how could he know so much about everything here?
"I know what you're thinking," Night said gently as he looked at me. "The answer is quite simple; you should be able to guess it right away. I am also one of Mirror Gate's people, aren't I?"
My body trembled slightly. Indeed, I had already guessed it—from his close relationship with Nie Qiuyuan, from his exquisite reconnaissance skills, from his clear mind, and from his profound understanding of Mirror Gate. Yet hearing those words come from him still made my heart feel a bit heavy.
In my mind, Mirror Gate was a cruel and violent organization, a place filled with sorrow. Before coming here, I had read countless case files; summing them up made me feel that if a person had ever experienced even a little warmth in this world, their heart could never be completely devoid of compassion. Thus, those heartless individuals must ultimately be sad people.
Night and Autumn had very different personalities; he was not as silent or heavy. Although he seemed like just a shadow, he appeared brighter than Autumn, more understanding and easier to deal with. It turned out that he too had struggled out of that sorrowful place of tears.
"My existence is a secret—one that even Ren Pingsheng does not know," Night Phantom said. "I am Autumn's best weapon; hopefully today luck will be on my side so I won't have to expose myself in front of them."
"Why did you two risk your lives to escape? What for?" I couldn't help but ask.
Night Phantom paused for a moment before replying, "It's simple: sixteen years ago, Nie Qiuyuan's entire family was annihilated; he was the only survivor. Later, he was taken in by Mirror Gate and raised. But several years ago, he discovered that the tragedy of his family seemed to be closely related to Mirror Gate."
Though it was only a few sentences, they contained an overwhelming amount of information that left me stunned.
I met Night's calm gaze: "It's that simple. However, for many years now, no clues have surfaced. Zhenzhen, there is an immense vortex behind Nie Qiuyuan; otherwise, Mirror Gate wouldn't relentlessly pursue him. So don't get any closer."
I couldn't quite catch the words about whirlpools, danger, closeness, and complexity; all that remained in my mind were two words: "Annihilation."
Sixteen years ago, Nie Qiuyuan must have only been five years old!
I recalled a tragic case of Annihilation I had been involved in investigating, where a family of five was shot dead in their home, leaving only a five-year-old child. The only reason I was brought to such cases was due to Zhang Yang's abuse of power, allowing me to act as an intern to comfort the children at the scene. Although that child was only five, the scars in their eyes were something I would never forget.
In an instant, the shadow of that child overlapped with Qiu's shadow, causing a deep pain in my heart. Suddenly realizing that I had read so much about him, yet only knew his future and not his past. The official records were often inadequate, failing to capture the hidden pains and emotions.
"What's wrong?" Night Phantom asked me in surprise. He reached out and gently wiped away a tear from the corner of my eye. I hadn't even noticed that I had started to cry.
He seemed to suddenly understand why I was in tears; his gaze softened as he paused for a moment before saying, "It's all in the past; there's no need to dwell on it. We still have time. Let me tell you something interesting."
He began to explain how Mirror Gate trained its detectives, discussing their investigative techniques and some training methods that sounded utterly brutal.
"So that's how you train Senses!" I exclaimed, nearly jumping up at the horrifying parts. My thoughts were completely captivated by what he was saying, and I forgot all about my sadness.
Night Phantom chuckled lightly. "Exactly! During that time, it felt like living hell!"
As he spoke, we heard a faint clattering sound from the wall, and the Digital Holographic Image appeared again. Night stood up and brushed off the dust from his clothes. "Time's up; let's go."
