"Anyway, your plan is already doomed. Why bother?" I scoffed at him, raising the dagger to my throat. "If I don't die by your hand, you won't be able to use me to harm others." 0

What mattered more was that I felt dying at his hands would be particularly gruesome. 0

But then, I felt a light breeze pass by, and Ren Pingsheng appeared beside me with ghostly speed, somehow already holding the dagger. He placed Ruo Chanjuan on the ground, then grabbed my left hand and gently pressed the dagger back into my palm. 0

"Very boring," he said. "I'm tired of this; I don't want to play anymore." 0

I stared at him in shock. 0

"How can this be? A pawn cannot move without my command! I thought you had died in the cave, but you didn't die there; you came here to die instead. That is unacceptable, Ah Ying." 0

I was stunned, two words echoing in my mind: psychopath... 0

"So I'm quite unhappy today. The show hasn't even started, and the White Tiger will be very disappointed, won't it?" Ren Pingsheng glanced sideways at Ruo Chanjuan, whose eyes were filled with hatred, and continued to speak to himself. "But foolish Ah Ying, today I've seen through your thoughts. One day, you will regret what happened today because sometimes living can be a form of suffering that you will feel in your very flesh. You and he are both." 0

What on earth was he talking about? I couldn't understand anything. I finally let go and shouted at him, "You lunatic! What do you want?" 0

Ren Pingsheng laughed. "I don't understand what you're saying; it must be an insult directed at me, right? Go ahead and curse me; your angry expression is quite cute." 0

I angrily tightened my grip on the dagger and gestured threateningly at him. He smiled as he seized my wrist with one hand while his other finger lightly brushed against my cheek, making my attempt to stab him feel like a flirtation instead. My anger flared even more. 0

"What do I want to do? Ah Ying, does doing something always need a reason? Just like how I want to torture you or perhaps not let you die today—does that require a reason?" He tilted his head and looked at me, the amusement returning to his eyes. 0

I silently thanked his ancestors for this nonsense logic! 0

"I hope you enjoy your father's punishment when you get home!" I recalled Ruo Chanjuan's words that I had overheard and spat out venomously. 0

"Hmph, whipping? What's so terrible about that? Just lying around for a month or so will do." The twisted man chuckled softly as he shoved a pill into my mouth, pinching my jaw so that it rolled down my throat. "Ah Ying, cherish your time well. You look beautiful when you smile; I hope it lasts a little longer." 0

I choked on it and coughed violently. Ren Pingsheng released my wrist and bent down to hoist Ruo Chanjuan over his shoulder, smiling as he said, "Ah Ying, goodbye." 0

Suddenly, they vanished. 0

Nothing was left—no one, no beasts, no corpses. The Fire Starter had long extinguished, so the blood of that poor girl who died for me was no longer visible on the dark ground. Strength gradually returned to my body, and I realized that what Ren Pingsheng had given me was likely the antidote to the poison of the Shifting Mirage Lion. However, my mind and heart felt as if they had been drained, and my legs weakened, causing me to stumble. 0

Am I not going to die after all? 0

How terrifying! A wave of intense fear surged within me. What had I just done? Had I almost been eaten by a monster? Had I nearly died? 0

My heart suddenly raced like a drum, and my entire body turned cold; my hands and feet trembled uncontrollably. I took a deep breath, but it was futile. I felt like crying, overwhelmed with fear. Is this what they call lingering dread? 0

But I needed to recover quickly; this was a deep mountain. What if there were other beasts? What if Ren Pingsheng changed his mind? What if he wanted to kill me again? He didn’t need a reason to take a life. 0

Yet, I couldn’t move; my feet wouldn’t budge. Alone in the silent forest, I stood trembling for at least fifteen minutes when suddenly I heard a whoosh followed by a thud as someone landed heavily from the treetops. 0

It’s over! My heart sank. Slowly, I turned toward the source of the sound. The bright moonlight poured down, illuminating the figure before me, who stared back at me in shock. 0

My heart sank again. 0

The cold yet bright moonlight cast a celestial glow on the man standing not far away, but perhaps there would never be such a disheveled celestial being in this world. Everything about him was chaotic—his hair, his clothes, his expression. I had never seen him look so flustered before; I had never seen so much meaning reflected in his eyes. Yet he was still him—no matter how he appeared, he remained handsome, my deity. 0

Nie Qiuyuan stood there ten paces away, motionless as he gazed at me. I didn’t know what he had gone through prior because he wore clothing belonging to Ren Pingsheng's disciple from Mirror Gate, haphazardly tied together. He must have endured a fierce battle; it was evident he was injured. His left sleeve bore wet stains, and blood trickled down his arm from his hand to his fingertips, dropping one by one into the soil. 0

In an instant, my frightened soul was enveloped by a gentle aura. He had come—someone I thought I would never see again had arrived here to save me. My guess was entirely correct; he was that kind of person; he would definitely come. 0

It was such a relief that those terrible things hadn’t happened! 0

Suddenly, courage surged within me again; I thought I couldn’t let him know what had transpired earlier. But how could I fabricate a story? Ren Pingsheng had sent him word; he knew I was in Ren Pingsheng's hands. How could I deceive his keen senses and return to my previous life? 0

“Brother!” I strained to control the tremor in my voice. “What are you doing here? Something terrible happened—terribly frightening!” 0

Nie Qiuyuan remained still, gazing at me in a way that sent shivers down my spine. 0

What was happening? 0

"Brother, that Ruo Chanjuan, the Chief Hunter, is a bad person! She is the terrifying White Tiger of the Mirror Gate. We were all deceived by her; she was the one who brought me here! She handed me over to someone named Ren Pingsheng, but then for some reason, they suddenly started fighting! I seized the chance to escape and ran into this forest. It was so... scary..." 0

I couldn't believe how I managed to spill out so many words, but as I continued, my pace slowed. Nie Qiuyuan's expression was complex as he slowly approached me, step by step, closer than I could have imagined, almost pressing against me. 0

He looked down at me, and the air felt incredibly cold. My body could even feel the warmth of his gentle breath. His breath brushed against my skin, making my already rapid heartbeat quicken even more. I felt like crying; my poor heart had endured such intense emotional turmoil in such a short time—how could anyone bear it? 0

"Bro... brother..." I felt powerless to speak; I couldn't hold it together anymore. I was on the verge of breaking down, tears welling up in my eyes. 0

In those beautiful eyes that looked down at me, I was astonished to discover something incredibly intense—like an intertwining of ice and fire. Something was battling within him; that struggle ignited a flame yet left me hesitant. 0

He slowly raised his right hand, which carried a warmth amidst the cold, gently resting on my left cheek and lifting my face. 0

That hand burned against my skin, causing my cheeks to flush and my heart to race in panic. In an instant, I felt lost and bewildered, my mind blank. My eyes widened in fear as I watched his conflicted gaze slowly close. He lowered his head gradually. 0

In that moment, everything vanished from my sight; all sensations disappeared in an instant. The only thing that remained was an overwhelming sense of touch—the heat of his body finally pressing against mine and the moist, burning lips that finally met mine. 0
