In a moment of crisis, a hero saves a beauty, holding her as they tumble down a cliff into an inescapable predicament. Alone and drenched, oh my god, this is simply a cliché scene straight out of every melodramatic drama!
Moreover, the bizarre winter thunderstorm brings cold air that chills the shivering couple to the bone. In typical storylines, they would have no choice but to strip down and use their body heat to warm each other (though I've always wondered why they would strip down when being naked would surely make them freeze faster), and then sparks would fly... oh my god, I really can't think about it anymore...
"What's wrong?" the drenched male lead asked. "Don't be afraid, it's okay now. Let's get out of here quickly; with this thunderstorm and all these trees around, it's not safe."
Perhaps my slightly lewd expression puzzled him, so I quickly composed myself and steadied my mind. He clearly had no intention of finding a place to take shelter from the rain and ignite any sparks.
At this point, we had already reached the valley floor. Nie Qiuyuan didn't put me down; instead, he adjusted his grip and carried me on his back, using lightness skills that made him seem to fly silently out of the mountain.
If my estimation was correct, once we got out of this mountain, we should find a village or some place to rest.
Nie Qiuyuan was incredibly fast; however, we were already soaked to the skin. With such speed, it felt like driving at 180 kilometers per hour on a highway with the windows down—the biting cold wind nearly turned me into a popsicle. Under such extreme discomfort, I truly couldn't indulge in the romantic scenario of being carried by the male lead anymore. With all my strength, I pleaded, "Can we find somewhere to hide... it's so cold..."
The male lead firmly refused: "No way, it could be struck by lightning."
Oh my god, while I knew not to linger under trees during thunderstorms, wait a minute—this line sounded oddly familiar.
Before I could ponder further, I suddenly felt the cold sensation lessen; Nie Qiuyuan's body temperature surged significantly, as if he had a fever. The places where our bodies touched radiated warmth.
"Liuying, hold on a bit longer; we'll find a place to rest soon."
My heart calmed with his warmth. I understood he was using his internal energy to warm me up. Though it was quite romantic, I still hoped we could reach our destination quickly.
Soon enough, Nie Qiuyuan flew us out of the valley. "There's a village ahead!" His voice carried a hint of excitement as the rumbling thunder above seemed to cheer us on.
However, when we joyfully rushed into the village, what greeted us was as shocking as the thunder overhead—it left both of us dumbfounded.
This was an ordinary village of moderate size, perhaps around a hundred households. Now, this settlement was devoid of any life; as we stepped through the entrance, we were stunned to discover that all the villagers lay dead on the ground in various positions.
The rain poured down relentlessly, washing away the bodies on the ground without mercy. The village had hundreds of inhabitants—men, women, and children. Some lay dead in the streets, others by the doorsteps, and some inside their homes. It wasn't just people; as I ventured further, I discovered that even the poultry and livestock had perished. The entire village had turned into a ghost town.
What kind of fate is this!
Even with my thick skin, witnessing such a scene sent chills down my spine. Fortunately, I reacted quickly and realized that as a Delicate Lady, merely feeling a bit uneasy was not a strong enough response. I let out a sharp scream and buried my face deep into my idol's neck.
Nie Qiuyuan set me down, wrapping his left arm around me tightly. Instead of drawing his sword, he broke off a branch from a nearby tree—neither too thick nor too thin.
Well, drawing his sword here would likely be courting death.
“Don’t be afraid, I’m here,” he said softly.
I nestled against him, feeling him focus intently on our surroundings. After a moment, his body relaxed slightly as he said, “There’s no killing intent; don’t worry.”
I nodded obediently as he held me close and led me into a larger nearby house. Inside lay several bodies sprawled haphazardly across the floor. However, Nie Qiuyuan didn’t pay them any mind; he searched the house thoroughly to ensure it was safe before quickly pulling me into an inner room. He glanced around briefly and then accurately opened a cabinet that contained clothes.
He pulled out two bed sheets from the cabinet, tossing one to me before rummaging through and retrieving a set of clothes to throw at me.
“Quickly dry off and change!” he ordered.
This was indeed a wise move. Although an entire village had perished—a grave matter—if we didn’t change clothes now, we would freeze to pneumonia at the very least. As they say, sharpening the knife doesn’t delay the chopping of wood. Well, since everyone was dead anyway, these belongings were of no use; wearing them would be their greatest value.
But wait, he didn’t seem to have any intention of going outside?
Nie Qiuyuan turned his back to me, his voice steady and calm as he said, “Hurry up and change; move quickly. In a place like this, don’t let your guard down.”
I was startled by this reminder; after all, we still didn’t understand how this village had met its end. That deadly weapon might still be nearby—oh my god, what was I thinking!
I stripped off my clothes with Special Forces speed, dried myself and my hair with the bed sheet, and changed into clean clothes. Instantly, warmth enveloped me. Oh my god, it felt like salvation!
Just taking a closer look, I gasped! What on earth did they choose for me? It was a thick cotton jacket, complete with patches, and it was hideously ugly. In that moment, I wished that Nie Qiuyuan would never turn around to look at me again.
But he did turn around, gazing at my dazed expression, and simply smiled, "Liuying, turn around."
It suddenly struck me that he hadn't changed yet.
As the person behind me rustled about changing clothes, I admitted to myself that I was being a bit wicked. While continuing to dry my hair with the bedsheet, I pulled out my copper mirror to check my face. For a girl, this action was quite natural; however, while looking at myself, I couldn't help but sneak a peek at my idol changing clothes.
He had his back to me, his upper body already bare, revealing the graceful lines of his back. But it wasn't a body that had been pampered; visible on his back were faint scars and marks scattered haphazardly. There seemed to be a fresh wound on his left shoulder that hadn't yet faded with time. Suddenly, I realized that it might be from the time he got hurt saving me in the woods.
Even so, it did nothing to detract from his elegance; if anything, it added a touch of masculinity. I stole another glance and felt my heart race wildly, completely unable to look any further.
Oh my gosh, what am I doing? How shameless! I felt ashamed of my lewd behavior.
Nie Qiuyuan changed clothes quite quickly. Once dressed, he rummaged through the wardrobe and pulled out two cotton hats, tossing one to me. We both put on our hats.
Now we looked like a pair of rural fellows and village girls; only the fellow looked too handsome even in tattered clothes, making it hard for anyone to find it amusing.
"Let's go, Liuying." Nie Qiuyuan took out a thin pair of cotton pants and wrapped them around my neck like a scarf, tying a knot to block out all the cold. "Let's see what's going on here."
