Who? I suddenly became alert, only to find several figures in black cloaks standing behind me.
Snowfall Villa? No! The attire of Snowfall Villa is different from this.
So, who are these people?
Since I was in a concealed state, I wasn't wearing a mask, and they could see my face clearly.
"Definitely a woman, and her appearance matches."
"This woman really appeared at Qingliang Temple; the master truly has remarkable foresight!"
"Be careful not to harm her. She is our key to victory. If anything happens to her, our lives are forfeit."
I heard the black-clad figures whispering quickly among themselves.
So, their target is me?
My mind raced along with their conversation. Who is the "master"? Why do they want to capture me? How did they know I would be here? Why must they not harm me?
Suddenly, a light went off in my heart. This must be Ren Pingsheng; it has to be Ren Pingsheng!
Only he would act this way. This means that Ren Pingsheng has already prepared for the worst-case scenario, anticipating that we might uncover this plot.
Only this explains why he would specifically send people to Qingliang Temple to capture me.
Right now, I could be Nie Qiuyuan's Achilles' heel. If they captured me alive and used me to threaten Nie Qiuyuan, it would certainly cause him harm!
I swiftly drew my short sword from my waist.
There were five people, the Five Mirror Gate Masters, coming to capture me, a girl who barely knew any martial arts. It was such a waste of their efforts.
However, I decided to fight back with all my might because their orders were not to harm me, which gave me some leverage.
With a sharp shout, I began to use various techniques to engage them in combat.
I employed the swordsmanship taught by Nie Qiuyuan, used Wing Chun and Capture Enemy Fist, threw sand in their faces, and even bit one of them.
“!!!” Finally, someone among them cursed.
“This girl is tough; let’s use some knockout drug!”
I was taken aback. That was beyond my capabilities. Seeing that I couldn’t win the fight, escape, or call for help was quite a predicament.
Just as the enemy was about to make their move against me, several shouts rang out as if from a movie set. A group of unexpected reinforcements descended and lined up in front of me.
All of them were tall men—seven in total—dressed in identical outfits that looked incredibly cool. Their clothing was deep blue, complemented by matching sashes and light golden soft armor. They were equipped with crossbows at their waists and held various weapons, appearing well-prepared, somewhat reminiscent of Li Shimin’s Shadow of Strategy. However, their outfit colors differed from those of Shadow of Strategy, and each of them wore a mask that added an air of elegance and mystery.
I was momentarily stunned. No matter how I looked at them, this group seemed oddly familiar. Why did they feel so comforting?
Out of the seven, six directly joined the fray while one stayed back to protect me and retreated towards Cool Breeze Palace.
“Benefactor, who are you?” My heart gradually calmed down as I finally had the chance to be curious about their identities.
“Miss, I am Shadow of the Night. Our mission from our master is to protect you.”
Night Phantom… the shadow?
I was taken aback, and only then did I realize that the color of this outfit and the disguise with the fake mask were precisely the signature look of Night Phantom.
Was it him, sending someone to protect me?
How long had it been since I last saw him?
That warm smile, that ever-present care and companionship, saving me in my moments of crisis, staying with me when I faced corpses, always available at my call, fulfilling my every request.
He would always have a place in my heart.
"Where is your master? Where is he?" I asked anxiously.
"The master instructed that if you ask this way, we should tell you not to worry. You will surely meet again soon," the Shadow of the Night said as he quickly led me away.
Is he really like that? Will we meet? When can I see him?
I had a feeling that Autumn would indulge me; if I insisted, he wouldn’t make things so absolute. He would definitely let Night come to see me. It’s just that I didn’t want to insist because Night truly wasn’t coming anymore, and I didn’t know what was in his heart.
I'm sorry, I've already chosen Autumn; I can't be indecisive anymore, even though Night really is wonderful.
I felt reassured because these people were sent by Night to save me, making me feel as if I were tied to a safety rope. We approached the great hall, where the sounds of clashing weapons, roars, and cries filled the air. It seemed that the battle inside was still raging fiercely.
I thought it best not to add to the chaos, so I stopped outside the hall with the Shadow of the Night. I wanted to find a discreet gap like a door or window to see what was happening inside, but at that moment, there was a deafening explosion that shook the entire hall.
I had no idea what was happening inside; it felt like an incredibly massive force similar to a shockwave had been unleashed. The hall swayed slightly before collapsing halfway with a thunderous crash.
Could it be that Zhuque used some inexplicable weapon again? But doing so would put their own people in danger! What about Luo Dachun? Hmm, he is highly skilled; surely he would be fine!
In my heart, a chill ran through me. Perhaps it was the Vermilion Bird realizing the situation was dire and planning to eliminate all its own people to silence them. I had witnessed that fellow's cold-heartedness firsthand.
It was truly remarkable that in this moment, so many thoughts raced through my mind, especially as the beams and pillars above me collapsed, crashing down with a thunderous roar.
With my limited abilities, escaping was impossible. The Shadow of the Night was only a few steps away, and it seemed unrealistic for him to rush over to save me. Even if he did come, he wouldn't be able to pull me out of the collapsing area in time.
A wave of despair washed over me—this was it! But dying like this felt too pathetic…
In this life-and-death moment, I suddenly felt a blur before my eyes, and miraculously, I found myself far from the main hall.
When I regained my composure, I realized a figure in a black cloak was holding me securely, standing still and gazing at the crumbling Mahavira Hall.
I was taken aback; this person seemed incredibly familiar!
To my surprise, the aura of this individual felt oddly known to me. Who else could it be? Even with the mask on, I recognized him—wasn’t this Ren Pingsheng?
"You... you..." I stammered, unsure of how to respond. He was an enemy; I should scold him. Yet if he hadn't saved me just now, I would have already returned to the modern world.
"I shouldn't be here," he said after a moment, letting out a soft sigh. "I sent someone to capture you, hoping that if you were indeed here, I could ensure your safe escape. But still, I wasn't at ease."
What did that mean? It sounded like he had come specifically to save me?
"Fortunately, I arrived in time, didn't I, Ah Ying?" He paused for a moment before suddenly chuckling softly. "Some people really do seem determined to oppose me at every turn!"
"You... put me down!" I commanded.
To my surprise, he actually set me down and removed his mask, revealing a smiling face.
"You won't succeed!" I declared with the tone of a martyr. Though I had been rescued, I sensed that my upcoming fate would be rather grim.
"Ah Ying, whether we succeed or not is irrelevant; I only do what I wish to do. Knowing that you have seen through this brings me great joy. If it were up to me, I would take you away right now, but there is still something I must do. Ah Ying, your companions are just behind; go find them and don't let them get hurt. We shall meet again."
With that, he pulled up his mask and lightly brushed my hair with his fingers before turning on his toes and soaring away like a great bird towards the main hall.
His movements were so swift that I could barely catch a glimpse of him before he vanished completely. Almost immediately, I heard a loud crash from within the hall, and soon after, the figure of Ren Pingsheng in green attire emerged, carrying the red-haired Zhuque, leaping out from somewhere to perch atop a large tree outside the hall.
Two other figures in monk robes followed closely behind, landing on the roof of the hall, facing Ren Pingsheng from a distance.
These were Luo Dachun disguised as Fang Xuanling and his brother Sikong Han.
I noticed their clothes were stained with blood, and I couldn't tell if they were injured. However, given the collapse of the hall, surviving was already a blessing; I quickly muttered a prayer in my heart.
Ren Pingsheng paused for a moment before taking Zhuque and leaping away into the distance.
Luo Dachun and the others did not pursue. In the current situation, chasing after them was simply not a wise choice.
What was most important was understanding how the situation at Qingliang Temple had unfolded.
