The state of the room was shocking, not just to Nie Qiuyuan, but even to me; it was truly unbearable to look at.
On the table, flowers were arranged, and flickering red candles burned. The stacked cups and plates had yet to be cleared away. A man lounged on the couch, cradling a limp and weak woman in his arms, both of them disheveled. What was most distressing was that Ren Pingsheng had remnants of the lipstick I had worn still lingering on the corner of his lips.
With Qiu's sharp intelligence, she must have immediately guessed everything that had transpired in this room.
Thus, a storm of fury suddenly ignited the atmosphere.
“Ren Pingsheng!” Nie Qiuyuan gritted his teeth and shouted each word as if he wanted to chew Ren Pingsheng's name into pieces.
Ren Pingsheng raised his hand and pinched my chin, a strange smile playing on his lips.
“Xuanwu, you’re late. Ah Ying here is simply extraordinary, truly an enchantress one cannot resist!”
I cursed him silently in my heart, but I couldn’t voice it; it was infuriating. In this situation, Qiu would have every reason to misunderstand that I had lost myself to him. He was clearly trying to provoke Qiu from the start.
Nie Qiuyuan’s gaze turned toward me, and surprisingly, what I saw wasn’t the humiliation of a man’s dignity being trampled upon, but rather a deep concern meant solely for me.
He looked at me, his voice shifting from the earlier hoarse anger to one filled with tender reassurance: “Zhenzhen, don’t be afraid, don’t be sad; it’s nothing serious. Don’t think about it. Soon, very soon, I will hold you until you forget everything. Zhenzhen, we’re about to get married; don’t cry. You mustn’t let your eyes swell up.”
I hadn’t been crying until he said that; immediately, tears streamed down my face.
The implication behind his words truly suggested he misunderstood that I had lost myself. He was telling me that no matter what happened, he would love me steadfastly and unwaveringly.
Hearing this made me feel as if I had no regrets in this life.
"Oh, so he calls you Zhenzhen..." Ren Pingsheng's gaze swept over me, and for some reason, the one who seemed provoked turned out to be him.
"Ren Pingsheng, let her go. Come at me," Nie Qiuyuan's voice regained its calm and coldness, which eased my heart.
"Come at you? What if I wasn't aiming for you from the start? What if my target was her all along?" Ren Pingsheng said, half angry and half mocking.
"Then come at me. She is my Wife; if you want to take her away, you'll have to kill me first."
Ren Pingsheng let out a cold laugh.
"The people of Mirror Gate value marriage so much; aren't they just seeking their own demise?"
Nie Qiuyuan also laughed coldly.
"You are no longer part of Mirror Gate."
With that, Qiu stepped forward towards us, one step at a time.
Ren Pingsheng did not move; he slowly drew a curved knife.
"Xuanwu, don't come any closer. Ah Ying's life is still in my hands."
But Nie Qiuyuan did not stop.
Ren Pingsheng frowned and slowly placed the blade against my neck. Yet Nie Qiuyuan continued to advance until he reached close enough to grasp Ren Pingsheng's wrist holding the knife.
I was stunned. Is this how hostages are rescued? If we all rescued hostages like this, they would have been dead long ago.
But the reality was that Ren Pingsheng did not slice my throat.
"Let her go and come at me," Nie Qiuyuan said, gripping his wrist firmly, his voice low.
A spark of anger ignited in Ren Pingsheng's eyes. However, unexpectedly, he did not harm me. Instead, he followed the command, extending his arms to place me gently on the bed before slowly standing up to face Qiu directly.
"Aren't you afraid?" Ren Pingsheng said coldly.
"You wouldn't dare hurt her," Nie Qiuyuan replied, seemingly infused with a hint of anger. "Fight outside; doing it here will only hurt her."
"Who do I need to fight with you?" Ren Pingsheng fell silent for a moment before suddenly laughing ominously. "I don't feel like fighting today; it's pointless."
"Because I want to fight you!" Nie Qiuyuan's brows furrowed as he spoke sharply. "Because I want to kill you!"
Ren Pingsheng burst into loud laughter.
"Xuanwu, then I definitely won't fight. How could I go against your wishes?" After saying this, he revealed something in his other hand that had not been caught by Nie Qiuyuan and swiftly thrust it toward Qiu's chest with lightning speed.
"Junior brother, you've secretly married without telling the sect. Since your senior brother knows now, I must give you something. Consider this a congratulatory gift."
To my astonishment, I saw that what Ren Pingsheng held was an old book, so worn that only half of it remained.
Nie Qiuyuan glanced at the text on the book and his body trembled slightly. He released Ren Pingsheng's hand and took the half book into his own.
"How did you get this?" Nie Qiuyuan asked in a low voice.
"That's none of your business. That technique has a second part, which I just discovered. With this, the evil energy within her can be resolved, and she won't have to live in fear anymore. However, Xuanwu, I advise you to think carefully about how this thing ended up at the Mirror Gate. So, tell that foolish girl that there are many people with ulterior motives down below; not everyone who offers her help is a good person."
As I listened to the two highly intelligent men exchanging cryptic remarks, I felt completely lost. Just then, I heard Ren Pingsheng provocatively say:
"Junior brother, Ah Ying is mine. I'm temporarily leaving her with you, but sooner or later, she will willingly come with me. I don't care who she marries or who she thinks about; it doesn't matter what happens to her. Don't think that marrying her means it's all settled."
I was furious, my anger boiling over. What kind of nonsense was this? A pervert, a lunatic!
But at that moment, I was shocked to find dozens of snakes of various colors suddenly crawling all over my body as if by magic.
Though I couldn't move, I could still feel them. The cold, slimy snakes slithered slowly across my skin, making my hair stand on end. I was generally quite brave, but aside from ghosts, the one thing I feared most in the world was snakes.
Cold-blooded, evil, venomous, and ruthless creatures! Moreover, these snakes were particularly vibrant in color—orange-red and fluorescent green—clearly warning colors. Many poisonous plants and animals have bright colors and patterns, but they are vibrant without being beautiful; their colors and patterns send a chilling message: Stay away; I'm highly toxic!
I wanted to scream at the top of my lungs, but I couldn't muster the ability; I couldn't even shiver—only tears of terror streamed down my face.
Just then, a shadow flashed by as someone approached me swiftly. A long sword was drawn, and in front of me erupted a flurry of sword flowers. In an instant, all the snakes on me were sliced into pieces and gruesomely scattered everywhere.
From a distance came a cold snicker. When I regained my senses, only Nie Qiuyuan and I remained in the room; Ren Pingsheng had vanished without a trace.
"Zhenzhen, are you okay?" Qiu threw down his sword and rushed over to me, picking me up in a hurry. But seeing the terror in my eyes, he quickly set me down again and swiftly cleared away the remnants of the poisonous snakes from the bed.
Only then did I feel relieved. He picked me up again and hurriedly checked my pulse and administered medicine. After a long while of fussing about, my body gradually began to regain sensation.
"Autumn..." I struggled to grasp his sleeve, burying my face in his embrace as I began to cry loudly.
He held me tightly, gently stroking my back, leaning down to whisper in my ear with the softest voice, "Alright, don't cry. Haven't I always been here? Zhenzhen, nothing has happened. Don't think about it. Look at me; I want you to only think of me, okay?"
It felt so good not to have been taken away, to still be with my idol. This was truly his embrace; how could I mistake it?! I just wanted to cry for a while, let me cry for a bit.
He held me tenderly, hesitating for a moment before leaning down to gently kiss my forehead. I was surprised to feel the faint tremor he was trying hard to hide within himself.
"Don't cry anymore, Zhenzhen. It's my fault; I wasn't capable enough, didn't consider things thoroughly, and failed to protect you, causing you this harm. I'm sorry, Zhenzhen. You can hit me or scold me, just please stop crying, alright?"
Autumn stroked my hair softly and said, "Zhenzhen, you have to believe me. No matter what happens to you, my feelings for you will never change. If someone tells you otherwise, they're lying. I care deeply; I care so much it drives me crazy. But that won't affect my feelings for you; they will only grow stronger. So, Zhenzhen, everything will be as it was before. Just forget about it."
I finally understood that I must have looked too disheveled; he must see me as a poor creature who had just suffered a severe emotional and physical blow.
So this was his intention: even if I had been violated by Ren Pingsheng, he would still cherish me as before. He wasn't pretending; all of this came from his heart. How fortunate I was!
No, I couldn't let him continue to suffer inside.
I tightened my grip on his clothing and whispered, "Actually... Ren, Ren Pingsheng didn't do anything... like that to me..."
Autumn's body trembled slightly as he looked at me in surprise. After a moment, he pulled me closer and softly murmured, "Hmm..."
I felt the tension within him release all at once. The calm and reliable person I had just seen suddenly leaned against me like a deflated balloon, as if I were the one comforting him now.
"Zhenzhen, I'm going crazy..." he mumbled.
"What’s wrong with you? … Hey, could you not press down on me like that? I just got poisoned, and I have no strength left..."
"Don’t..."
"Hey, what are you trying to do?!"
Qiu ghed deeply.
"Ye Zhenzhen, you really don’t make things easy for me. Why do I feel like every man in the world has turned into my enemy?"
"You’re talking nonsense. Ren Pingsheng is the one trying to harm you; I’m just caught in the crossfire!"
But the male god ignored me.
"Ye Zhenzhen, count how many people are around you, both near and far, friends and foes, from the Tang Dynasty and other worlds. Why does everyone seem to have their eyes on you? And why is it that each one is so difficult to deal with…"
Who are all these people? It’s simply self-inflicted trouble!
"Ye Zhenzhen, we’re married now, and there’s still a long road ahead. How many more troublesome men do I have to deal with?"
This is such a huge injustice! I reached out and tugged at his ear.
"Nie Qiuyuan, think about it! Let me count how many people are watching you! Not even counting Melan and that woman from Mirror Gate, just look at how many girls on Mountain Peak are sending you flirtatious glances! And that doesn’t even include Yichuan County…"
The male god smirked, grabbed my hand, and shamelessly changed the subject.
"Zhenzhen, can I have a kiss?"
"No."
"Just one."
"What do you really want?"
"I just really want to. I didn't dare before, but now I do."
"No! Thinking about those other girls makes me angry! ... Hey, what are you doing?!"
See, the thing is, he never actually asked for my opinion on these matters. So when he pretends to ask for my consent, it's just a formality; he doesn't care whether I agree or not.
Well, if there are many beautiful girls admiring you, but in your eyes and heart, there's only me, and you marry me, holding my hand as we grow old together. Even if I complain and say it's such a hassle, deep down, my love, I feel incredibly proud!
