I stood at a distance, unconsciously gripping my weapon, Cai You, so tightly that my right hand began to feel numb.
After years of diligent training in martial arts, I could no longer be considered an outsider to the world of martial arts. While I couldn't fully grasp the thrilling dynamics of the three-way battle, I could still discern some of its intricacies.
My first impression was that Rong Fu truly lived up to his reputation. Seeing him in action made it clear that his martial skills were overwhelmingly powerful. I kept retreating, moving further away from them, secretly channeling my internal energy for protection. Yet, even so, I felt the gusts of energy from Rong Fu's strikes sweeping past me, causing waves of blood to surge in my chest.
The disciples of Mirror Gate behind me were also retreating in haste. Those with weaker skills were swept by the force and some even fell to their knees, spitting blood.
Only Ren Pingsheng remained steadfast, standing still as he furrowed his brow and observed the situation on the battlefield. Despite his serious injuries and diminished strength, he appeared calm and unaffected by Rong Fu's power. It was evident that even in his weakened state, his internal energy was still far deeper than mine.
Ren Pingsheng's expression grew increasingly grave as he frowned tighter. I suspected he had noticed the peculiar changes unfolding on the battlefield, which was good news for me but not for him.
In just a moment, nearly a hundred exchanges had occurred without a clear victor emerging!
This not only exceeded Ren Pingsheng's expectations but seemed to surprise Rong Fu as well.
Originally, with Nie Qiuyuan and Luo Dachun's abilities, they were at least one level below Rong Fu in terms of combat capability. However, the situation had shifted; these two had recently absorbed a wealth of profound internal energy left behind by their ancestors in the Buddhist Hall of Youqiong Clan. Thus, how the battle would unfold had suddenly become an unknown factor.
They had merely absorbed their ancestors' internal energy into their bodies through Divine Elixir without having time to fully assimilate it. At first contact, they were clearly at a disadvantage. However, both were among the most intelligent individuals I had encountered since arriving in Tang Dynasty. They began experimenting with different methods to harness the powers of Blazing Fire Divine Pill and Ice Cold Divine Pill amidst the fierce battle.
Luo Dachun had been infused with Ice Cold Divine Pill for years and had fought alongside Divine Elixir during that time; thus, he had more insight into utilizing its power. Meanwhile, Nie Qiuyuan had begun instinctively using Blazing Fire Divine Pill's healing properties after sustaining injuries during the Baiyun Mountain incident. His method of integrating Divine Elixir into his body was safe and scientific, benefiting him without any adverse effects, making it easier for him to wield its power.
As a result, an unexpected scenario unfolded where neither opponent could be defeated; instead, they grew stronger with each exchange. The more I watched, the more confident I became. With their intelligence quotient, if this battle turned into a war of attrition, it would only favor our side as time went on.
Gradually, Nie Qiuyuan and Luo Dachun began to reverse their initial disadvantage. From being flustered and only able to defend themselves at first, they became increasingly composed and even started launching occasional attacks.
Rong Fu initially fought with arrogance and carelessness. After a hundred exchanges, however, his demeanor changed; he became serious and focused intently on each move he made. His strikes gained tremendous power almost instantaneously. Yet he clearly hadn’t anticipated that his opponents would become more resilient and stronger as the fight progressed. By the time Rong Fu unknowingly exerted all his strength, both adversaries still showed no signs of faltering.
Nie Qiuyuan and Luo Dachun were completely absorbed in their fight, entering a state where they were oblivious to everything else around them. They unleashed several times their previous strength and managed to hold their ground against Rong Fu.
In earlier times, such a scenario would have been unimaginable. It was fortunate that we had just uncovered the secrets of Youqiong Clan and received assistance from mysterious powers—like divine protection.
Ren Pingsheng silently observed from the side with a furrowed brow; he seemed astonished yet contemplative. He must have thought that reaching this point meant Nie Qiuyuan and Luo Dachun were finished. I didn’t know what backup plan he had prepared against Rong Fu, but it seemed now that he wouldn’t be able to use it anytime soon. The current situation was something he could never have predicted.
In just a few hours, Nie Qiuyuan and Luo Dachun underwent a remarkable transformation—who would believe it?
Ren Pingsheng had meticulously calculated everything; it should have been a sure thing. However, he was never short of intelligence and strength—what he lacked was luck.
Luck seemed to have never been on his side, not since his early days, and even now, it remained elusive.
Nevertheless, Ren Pingsheng was never one to leave his future to chance. As long as he was alive, he would always strive to be the master of his fate.
He swayed lightly and appeared beside me like a ghost. I was taken aback, and before I could react, he flicked his finger, sending a mint-flavored pill flying into my mouth, which rolled down my throat with a gulp.
Seriously, why do you men always have to be so rough when giving me medicine? Did I even agree to take it?
Ren Pingsheng spoke in a low voice, "Focus and hold your breath. Try to keep your airways clear. I will be using a very potent poison shortly. If you take the medicine and hold your breath, you should be fine. Do not approach."
Before his words faded, Ren Pingsheng had already drawn a curved blade from his hand and with a swift motion transformed it into a long scythe. He twirled the scythe gracefully and shouted, "Xuanwu, let me show you what I've got!" With that, he dashed into the fray.
In theory, Ren Pingsheng's martial arts skills were comparable to those of Nie Qiuyuan at his peak. Now, however, Ren Pingsheng was injured while Nie Qiuyuan and Luo Dachun had significantly increased their internal energy. In terms of strength, they were no longer on the same level. Yet the moment Ren Pingsheng joined the battle, the tide suddenly turned.
Initially, a subtle balance had formed between Rong Fu and Nie Qiuyuan; both sides were evenly matched. Nie Qiuyuan's sword techniques were fierce yet steady, while Luo Dachun's knife skills were as swift as a raging storm. Their contrasting internal energies complemented each other perfectly. But once Ren Pingsheng entered the fray, wielding his scythe with precision between the two fighters, every strike targeted their weakest points, forcing them to retreat and adjust their tactics. The rhythm of the battle was completely disrupted.
In terms of skill level, Ren Pingsheng clearly could not compare to anyone else on the battlefield. Thus, he cleverly avoided direct confrontation by employing agile movements and using Rong Fu as a shield against any hard hits. Although he seemed to merely float around the battlefield, ignoring him would pose a significant threat.
It was my first realization that even when holding a losing hand, one could still play effectively. I also discovered just how terrifying Ren Pingsheng's intelligence and insight truly were.
He exerted minimal effort; yet every move he made precisely targeted the vulnerabilities in Nie Qiuyuan's and Luo Dachun's techniques. His goal was to undermine their greatest strengths—Nie Qiuyuan's precision and Luo Dachun's speed. Once these advantages were neutralized, their combat rhythm fell into chaos. As they faltered, Rong Fu's abilities suddenly flourished.
When both sides were evenly matched, whichever side Ren Pingsheng supported would gain an advantage. However, he skillfully maintained a slight edge for his side while preventing Nie Qiuyuan from gaining any advantage over Rong Fu. I sensed that his intention was to prolong this battle indefinitely under his control until both sides were exhausted.
It was akin to the standard strategy for traitors in my favorite modern tabletop game "Three Kingdoms Kill"!
Suddenly, Nie Qiuyuan's expression changed sharply. His dark figure spun around as if employing some unknown technique; suddenly, the air filled with bizarrely colored light blue butterflies.
Although every time I saw my Butterfly Prince unleash his ultimate move stirred excitement within me, this was a life-or-death moment; I felt a tightness in my chest and had no energy left to marvel at it.
I watched as those light blue butterflies appeared crystal clear and pristine like flowing water. However, as they danced in the air, their colors gradually turned pitch black like ink, one by one fluttering down from midair like falling leaves.
"Not good!" I silently exclaimed in my heart. I had heard from Nie Qiuyuan about this type of butterfly; it is the Purifying Butterfly, which is released to protect us when there are toxic gases or miasma in the air.
So, does that mean the air is already poisoned?
I quickly held my breath and focused on my Dantian. The antidote that Ren Pingsheng had given me should counteract this poison, so as long as I didn’t act recklessly and protected myself, I should be fine.
The dozens of Mirror Gate disciples standing across from me, however, were not as fortunate.
There were no screams or wails; instead, their eyes suddenly widened as they clutched their throats, their faces contorted in extreme agony, yet no sound escaped their throats. One by one, their bodies twisted and struggled before collapsing to the ground, convulsing until they breathed their last.
The scene over there was too horrifying to behold. A chill ran through me; Ren Pingsheng had given me the antidote, but his own people were left without a cure when using the poison. Was this part of his plan?
These disciples were all loyal dogs of Rong Fu. If Ren Pingsheng were to turn against Rong Fu, then these people would be nothing but obstacles. Ren Pingsheng's plan was originally a terrifying scheme for murder, so he wouldn’t care about these lives at all. Using poison now to conveniently eliminate them was quite practical.
It was just this ruthlessness that sent shivers down my spine.
Rong Fu's hoarse voice rang out with anger: "Pingsheng, what are you doing? Using poison without providing an antidote for your own people? When did our sect's rules change? Do you even want to harm your own father?"
Ren Pingsheng moved gracefully among several people. His weapon was the longest, yet his movements remained agile and unaffected. As he fought, he chuckled lightly and said, "Father’s medical skills are unparalleled; how could such a trivial poison possibly harm him!" (To be continued...)
