Pushing open the glass door of the clothing store, Chu Donglin once again stepped onto the brightly lit street illuminated by streetlights.
These streetlights were automated electrical devices, so the drastic changes in human society had not yet affected them.
However, Chu Donglin knew that this situation could not last forever. With power plants abandoned and equipment left unmaintained, the circuits would age and fail, and this city powered by electricity would gradually descend into paralysis. The lights would no longer shine, and the wires would be devoid of power.
But it no longer mattered; no matter how this city would change in the future, it was temporarily irrelevant to Chu Donglin.
He staggered forward, moving like a drunken old man toward another street.
His heart was filled with anxious emotions.
He desperately wanted to hear his parents' voices again, to confirm their safety and whereabouts. As for how he, now transformed into a Zombie and unable to speak, could communicate with his parents, the agitated Chu Donglin unconsciously forgot about that.
The Zombie's body felt heavy and cumbersome, its limbs weakened significantly.
Although Chu Donglin could sense that his strength had increased considerably, his physical qualities—such as reaction speed and agility—had been greatly diminished.
It felt as if the Zombie virus had transformed his body, channeling all its potential into strength while neglecting everything else.
Dragging his unsteady feet, Chu Donglin struggled to move forward on the street, brushing past many wandering Zombies who were lost in their own world.
Unlike him, these Zombies had only a vacant silence in their eyes, akin to what one might see after death.
Chu Donglin believed that the consciousness of these Zombies was as empty as their gaze; apart from a strong instinct to feed, there was nothing but a blank void.
Stumbling forward for more than ten minutes, the intersection was just ahead, but Chu Donglin's gaze was drawn to a massive sign by the roadside.
It was a neon sign, common in the city, glowing brightly against the night sky. The words "Xinda Supermarket" shone brilliantly in his eyes.
Chu Donglin swallowed hard.
He looked at the enormous supermarket beside him, where he could see through the transparent glass doors the shelves filled with an array of goods.
However, it wasn't the dazzling shelves that captivated him; it was the meat storage freezer that might be hidden deep within the supermarket...
Images of the meat freezers that every supermarket had flashed through his mind, along with the fresh meat frozen inside. Since awakening, his perpetually hungry stomach let out a strange growl.
He knew it was the instinct of a Zombie craving raw meat that urged him on.
As he passed by the supermarket, his brain registered what lay inside, and for the first time, his instincts as a Zombie broke through the constraints of reason, taking control of his consciousness.
He gazed at the supermarket beside him, thinking about the fresh raw meat hidden within. Saliva surged forth uncontrollably, spilling down his chin.
He awkwardly wiped away the drool that flowed from his mouth and glanced back at the intersection ahead before staggering into the darkness of the supermarket.
Just a little... just a taste. Once I'm full, I'll leave right away.
Chu Donglin reassured himself internally; if he ate enough to satisfy his hunger and left immediately afterward, it would surely be fine.
A slight delay wouldn’t matter; his father and the others would wait a bit longer. They definitely wouldn’t mind... yes, they certainly wouldn’t mind.
With an excuse in mind, Chu Donglin's hesitation vanished. Like a wild dog unleashed, he drooled as he charged into the supermarket.
He pushed open the glass door with all his might and stumbled into the dark interior of the store.
It was evident that during the week since the apocalypse began, several groups had already raided the supermarket.
The shelves, once filled with a variety of goods, were nearly emptied of edible items. Some shelves had even been toppled over, lying askew on the floor. The entire supermarket resembled a place that had been thoroughly ransacked, chaotic and disordered.
This messy environment made it exceptionally difficult for Chu Donglin to move forward.
After turning into a zombie, his body felt unusually heavy, making him clumsy. Attempting to climb over the shelves was a fool's errand; he could only navigate around them from a distance.
This significantly slowed his already sluggish pace. By the time he finally found the Frozen Fresh Section on the second floor of the wrecked supermarket, a full hour had passed.
But all his efforts were worth it. Thanks to the zombie's faint night vision, he gazed at the pile of meat in front of him in the Fresh Produce Section and grinned.
“Grrr… Grrr…”
His damaged vocal cords could no longer produce clear sounds. However, the tone filled with joy, even if it came out as a low growl from his throat, conveyed Chu Donglin's happiness.
Without hesitation, he lunged forward and tightly embraced a piece of frozen cured meat, devouring it with madness.
For ordinary zombies, they were unaware that frozen fresh meat existed in such places and would not touch this cured meat.
For survivors searching for food, fresh meat held far less value compared to readily consumable chocolate snacks or biscuits. In an environment surrounded by zombies, lighting a fire would be akin to seeking death.
So these well-preserved fresh meats became a bargain for Chu Donglin. He happily swallowed the cured meat, and although the dried meat tasted like chewing on wax, the pleasure of eating consumed his soul, almost making him addicted to it.
After finishing the cured meat, he began to eat the frozen fresh meat.
Unlike the cured meat, most of this fresh meat had already spoiled. However, it didn't matter; Chu Donglin quickly found the supermarket's freezer. He pushed open the large door and pulled out a pile of exceptionally solid frozen meat.
"Crunch... Crunch... Crunch..."
The frozen meat, as hard as stone, could not withstand Chu Donglin's chewing. After becoming a Zombie, both the strength of his teeth and his biting power had improved significantly.
Happily chewing on this cold, hard fresh meat, Chu Donglin made strange crunching sounds in his mouth. The noise was akin to chewing ice cubes, echoing through the dark supermarket and creating an eerie atmosphere.
With each bite he took in his Madness of eating, a wave of comforting warmth rose from his stomach and spread throughout his body.
This warm sensation made Chu Donglin let out a low growl. Both his mind and body felt a sweet pleasure.
Amidst those waves of delightful extreme sensations, Chu Donglin lost his soul, sinking into an irretrievable frenzy.
He moved piece after piece of fresh meat from the freezer, continuously chewing and swallowing this cold and hard or thawed meat. His parents and everything human were long forgotten.
After he was full, he would lie down on the ground to sleep. Once his body had fully broken down the energy from the meat into warm currents flowing through him, he would wake up hungry again.
Awakening hungry, Chu Donglin would once more madly pounce on the fresh meat in the freezer, then eat until full, sleep, wake up hungry again, and repeat...
This dazed state continued for an unknown duration. Occasionally, Chu Donglin would regain some awareness, but his consciousness would quickly be lost again in the extreme pleasure of consuming energy.
"Just a little longer... just a little longer, and I'll leave after I finish this last piece... the last piece..."
Countless times, Chu Donglin murmured this to himself as he lunged once more at the "last piece of meat" in his sight.
Finally, after an unknown amount of time had passed, when the vast freezer was left with only a few lonely pieces of meat, Chu Donglin's body suddenly began to writhe in agony.
The warm flow that had filled him during his feasting abruptly surged out from every part of his body, continuously flooding towards his brain.
The unbearable pain tormented Chu Donglin's willpower. He let out a pained wail, thrashing on the ground as if only this could alleviate his suffering.
Ten minutes later, unable to endure the torment any longer, Chu Donglin finally succumbed to unconsciousness, leaving only his body trembling occasionally in the darkness—a reflex born from excruciating pain.
This time, he slept for two full days.
When Chu Donglin opened his eyes again and sat up, he discovered that his body had undergone yet another change.
His night vision ability, which had previously allowed him to see only blurry images in the dark, seemed to have improved slightly; things appeared clearer—though still far from true night vision, it was a remarkable transformation compared to before.
Moreover, his body, which had initially felt as heavy as if filled with cement, had become lighter. His weak fingers could now clench tightly.
If it weren't for the limited range of his vision and the unbearable hunger still gnawing at his insides, Chu Donglin might have thought he had become human again.
In addition to this, there were other changes—he punched the metal shelf beside him with a forceful blow. The shelf shook violently, producing a deafening sound accompanied by a deep dent from his fist.
If his strength as a Zombie had been several times greater than when he was human, then now Chu Donglin's strength had multiplied again compared to when he first became a Zombie, reaching an inhuman level.
Quietly recalling the warm flow that had spread from his stomach to his entire body during his previous feeding, Chu Donglin began to understand something.
It seemed that Zombies could continuously absorb energy while feeding, becoming stronger in the process.
At first, the virus had transformed Chu Donglin's body, channeling all his potential into strength, which resulted in a decline in other physical attributes to varying degrees.
However, as Chu Donglin consumed enough energy and completed his first evolution, not only did his strength increase, but his other physical qualities also improved significantly.
His movements were no longer sluggish, and his power had become even more terrifying; this qualitative evolution was enough to delight any living being.
If it weren't for the fact that he had already turned into a Zombie, with an insatiable hunger for the flesh and blood of the living still gnawing at him, perhaps Chu Donglin would have laughed heartily three times.
But now, he could only bitterly pull out his phone from his pocket, staring at the black screen that had been dark for who knows how long, letting out a low growl.
Having delayed for so long, he wondered if his parents were still alive and if anything unfortunate had happened... Chu Donglin's heart was filled with deep self-reproach and guilt.
