Sitting on the sofa for over ten minutes, waiting for the girl to fall into a deep sleep, Chu Donglin finally stood up and walked toward the kitchen.
Since he planned to stay here from now on, the place definitely needed a good cleaning.
This room had been unoccupied for nearly a month, and many areas were already covered in dust. Chu Donglin did not want to live in a dump with the girl.
He opened the refrigerator and tossed all the rotten and spoiled food into a garbage bag, along with other miscellaneous items, which he then took out to the doorstep.
Chu Donglin first grabbed a broom and swept the entire room.
The living room had two bedrooms, as well as a bathroom and kitchen. Although he tried his best to be quiet, some clattering noises were unavoidable.
After clearing away the dust and unnecessary clutter, Chu Donglin began mopping the floor and cleaning the windows.
At this point, there was no electricity; without maintenance, the power system had collapsed, making power outages in the city inevitable. Although tap water still flowed freely, it likely wouldn't last much longer.
Chu Donglin felt he needed to prepare some clean drinking water for later.
The girl was different from him; as a living person, she needed food and water, which were rather troublesome matters.
The only thing Chu Donglin felt fortunate about was that he was unlike those Survivors; when he went out to search for food, he didn't have to worry about being attacked by Zombies.
If it weren't for those Mutated Zombies who enjoyed killing each other, making Chu Donglin's life less than secure, this entire city would be no different from his backyard.
Just as Chu Donglin leaned against the window to clean the glass, he suddenly sensed a gaze fixed on him from behind.
He turned around abruptly and saw that the girl had Awakened and was sitting on the sofa, staring at him blankly.
With a gentle smile, Chu Donglin approached the girl and crouched down. "Are you awake? What do you want to eat?"
The girl merely stared at him blankly, showing no reaction.
Sighing, Chu Donglin handed a piece of bread to Shishi.
It seemed that the torment the girl had endured in the villa was so terrible that it had completely closed off her heart. If he wanted Shishi to emerge from that fear and despair and regain her former lively and cute self, he still had a long way to go.
This time, the girl did not shy away; she silently accepted the bread that Chu Donglin offered.
Looking down at the bread in her hands, the girl then lifted her gaze to meet Chu Donglin's smiling face. After hesitating for a long while, she finally began to eat it slowly.
To avoid startling her, Chu Donglin continued to watch her eat with a smile, not leaving her side.
The two of them sat there in silence, gazing at each other. Once the girl finished the bread in her hands, Chu Donglin offered her another piece.
After finishing the third piece of bread, when the girl took the next one from Chu Donglin, her brows furrowed slightly in discomfort.
"You silly... silly girl," Chu Donglin said helplessly as he snatched the bread from her hands. He chuckled and patted her head. "If you can't eat anymore... then don't force yourself."
The girl paused, instinctively touching her head. She looked at Chu Donglin with confusion, seemingly curious about why it didn't hurt this time when he playfully hit her.
"Alright... since you're full now, just sit quietly and wait for me for a bit. I'll clean up the room first and then take you to shower."
Stuttering slightly, Chu Donglin stood up. He realized that ever since he found the girl, his own speech had become more fluent.
Although his speech was still somewhat stuttered, it was a world apart from how he had started. In fact, if he wanted to, he could speak like a Normal Human.
However, this ability to speak came at a cost.
Touching his somewhat sore throat, Chu Donglin could feel a burning sensation in his vocal cords. After several attempts, he had mastered the method to speak without stuttering.
But speaking this way put a significant strain on his vocal cords.
Chu Donglin estimated that if he wanted to talk like a Normal Human, he would need to evolve at least once more, allowing the overall quality of this body to improve significantly.
By the time Chu Donglin finished cleaning the room, it was already past five in the afternoon.
During this time, Shishi had been sitting quietly on the sofa, completely still. With her adorable face, she looked just like a delicate doll.
He checked the water in the bathroom; due to the power outage, the water heater was completely useless. Fortunately, the gas in the kitchen was still operational.
Chu Donglin planned to boil some hot water using the gas for the girl’s bath and to change out of her dirty dress.
However, finding clean clothes for Shishi was a bit of a hassle. Chu Donglin couldn't find anything suitable for her at the moment.
He stroked his chin thoughtfully before picking up the girl and heading downstairs. He remembered that there was a supermarket not far from where they had come from, which surely sold children's clothing.
Since the apocalypse had arrived, no one would care about those clothes. Even if Chu Donglin took everything he found, no one would complain. So he carried Shishi and happily whistled as he made his way to the store.
“Shishi, let's go pick out some new clothes for you! What color do you want?”
After mastering the technique of speaking, Chu Donglin tried to converse with the girl at a normal pace.
Although this put a significant strain on his vocal cords, as long as he maintained longer pauses between words, it wasn't too much of an issue—after all, the girl wouldn't respond to him. His goal was simply to engage in everyday conversation to provide her with a sense of safety and to gradually open up her closed heart.
Of course, he wasn't entirely sure whether this method, typically used on autistic patients on television, would be effective.
But at this point, he could only treat a dead horse as if it were alive.
This area was located in the bustling city center, and the supermarket was usually crowded with people.
From a distance, Chu Donglin caught a whiff of an incredibly enticing smell of blood. It was reminiscent of the horrific scene left behind when people fleeing from madness were overwhelmed and devoured by zombies at the entrance when the apocalypse first broke out.
As Chu Donglin approached the unusually narrow entrance of the supermarket compared to its overall size, he saw a thick layer of dark red meat paste on the ground.
Those strange substances, mixed with shattered bones and rotten flesh, had been trampled by countless feet and had formed an odd carpet-like shape.
For ordinary humans, this would be utterly disgusting; yet, Chu Donglin found himself oddly enjoying the scent...
What the hell? Becoming a zombie even altered his sense of smell. Thankfully, his aesthetic sense hadn't changed; otherwise, if he found this repulsive sight beautiful, he would truly have become a pervert.
Shaking his head to dispel these chaotic thoughts from his mind, Chu Donglin carried Shishi into the supermarket.
With a swish—
Instantly, all the zombies in the hall turned their hungry gazes toward him.
At least a thousand Zombies crowded the first floor of the Supermarket, their over a thousand eyes fixed intently on Chu Donglin, making him feel inexplicably uneasy.
He vaguely sensed that something terrifying lurked among them, ready to leap out and tear him apart with ease. The sensation of having a sharp blade pressed against his throat sent chills down his spine.
Snapping back to reality, Chu Donglin realized he had unconsciously taken two steps back.
Being intimidated by a group of lowly creatures in front of a child made him feel embarrassed.
"Uh... look... look away!" He widened his eyes and shouted at the Zombies, "Anyone who looks this way will be skinned alive!"
Of course, the Zombies couldn't understand Chu Donglin's words, but the enticing scent of fresh human flesh emanating from the girl was undeniable. A horde of Zombies surged forward, instantly plunging the entire hall into chaos.
With some reluctance, he managed to control over a hundred Zombies closest to the entrance, blocking their path and preventing the frenzied ones from getting through. Only then did Chu Donglin take the girl and flee in haste.
They ran until they reached a pedestrian bridge several hundred meters away, where Chu Donglin finally stopped.
"What the hell, how can there be so many Zombies?"
Standing on the bridge, he looked back at the Supermarket. The Zombies' vision was limited to a blur, but their hearing was sharp enough to catch the commotion inside.
Inside the Supermarket, the Zombies stirred for more than ten minutes due to the alluring scent of human flesh before gradually calming down.
Sitting on the steps of the bridge with the girl on his lap, Chu Donglin felt somewhat frustrated.
He had originally planned to take the girl inside directly; after all, with his ability to control Zombies, as long as their numbers weren't overwhelming, he could easily lead Shishi through the horde.
He clearly underestimated the crowd density in a supermarket. When disaster strikes, people rush frantically toward the main entrance, fearing that all the zombies in this thirteen-story supermarket have crowded into the lower levels.
The terrifying density is enough to paralyze anyone.
Previously, he caught a glimpse of the scene; the number of zombies in that hall could nearly fill every inch of space.
That was a true zombie sea. In such circumstances, it wouldn't matter if he brought a girl with him; even if he tried to enter alone, he would likely be unable to push through.
"These bastards, aren't they blocking my way?"
Chu Donglin sat on the bridge and thought for a moment before ultimately having to helplessly give up on the supermarket.
Although there weren't any children's clothing stores nearby, he figured he could still find something if he looked around.
However, just as Chu Donglin stood up with the girl in his arms, he spotted a zombie sneaking out from the street corner not far away.
Yes, it was indeed running, not the usual slow walk of an ordinary zombie.
Chu Donglin held the girl tightly and looked down at the stealthy mutated zombie with narrowed eyes.
