It wasn't very painful, but it was so sudden that I almost jumped out of fright. My first reaction was to kick something over. I kicked something onto Cave Wall, and then it bounced back and rolled forward along the slope of the passage. This time I saw it clearly. It turned out to be another form of bugs chasing us. As I initially judged, this was some kind of Tide Worm, or a variant thereof. However, its basic form remains unchanged. When in danger or entering a dormant state, it will curl up into a ball. The ball-shaped bug in front of me was as big as an adult's fist, black, and glowed with a metallic luster under the light of the torch. However, the shell of this bug is really as strong as iron armor. I was wearing hard-toed military boots, and even when I kicked it, it didn't explode, and it wasn't even dented or deformed. Watching this black iron ball-like ball rolling past Zhao Squad Leader faster and faster, I suddenly had some guesses about the slightly inclined design of this passage. As the first curled-up bugs rolled past, more and more ball-shaped bugs passed us, turning the passage into a bowling track. We must always be careful not to be knocked over or tripped over by bug balls. The temperature is getting lower and lower. Based on the falling temperature, I originally thought that this road would lead to the entrance where we came in, but gradually I was not sure because the temperature here was already lower than the temperature on Embankment. When entering the passage, things happened suddenly. We were all in different panics. I didn't notice the change in temperature at all, so I couldn't judge the temperature at the entrance stage. But my inference is that since the temperature of the channel is higher than the temperature of Embankment, the entrance should be the watershed of the temperature difference. Based on this judgment, the temperature should gradually decrease from the channel back to the entrance, but it will not drop below the temperature of Embankment. Now that this situation is beyond normal, the direction we are heading may not be the entrance, but the place that causes Hu Aiguo hypothermia. It should be a strange place where we may encounter unknown dangers, and we should be prepared. I immediately gave my judgment to Liu Squad Leader and Hu Aiguo. Zhao Squad Leader was far away and I couldn’t tell him my thoughts. Liu Squad Leader scolded her after hearing this. He doesn't even have a fire stick at the moment. If there is really a danger, his only weapon is his teeth. At this moment, the bugs curled up into a ball suddenly became denser, coming from behind like an avalanche. Although the curled-up bugs no longer have offensive power, I am still very scared to be carried away by so many bugs. I am also worried about being knocked over by these iron-like bug balls and rolling with them. It's a horrifying thing to think about. But this situation did not last long. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind hit my face, the light of the torch suddenly dimmed, and my eyes widened. Zhao Squad Leader ran forward for more than ten meters before he noticed something strange and stopped. He held the torch and looked around. I didn't see Cave Wall. It seemed to be a very open place, and the bugs curled up into balls were still rolling out of the passage and rolling to all directions in this space. Through the sound of the worm ball rolling, I found that it was very big here. The worm ball seemed to be rolling non-stop, as if this space had no boundaries. Zhao Squad Leader is confused by the current situation and doesn’t know what to do. In the passage, he only needs to run along the passage, and there is no direction to choose. This is almost a huge square, which way to go becomes a problem. He was stunned for a moment and asked me: "Where is this? How to get there?" I was also confused and had no idea of where I was. But I think it is impossible for us to go back to that passage. Although a large number of bugs are already frozen, I believe that there are still more bugs in the passage waiting for us to go back. Since it is a huge space, it doesn’t matter which way we run. As long as we still have the confidence to survive, we must always try to explore this place. Staying away from these damn bugs was the main force that dominated my thoughts. I said without hesitation: "Keep running forward and run in a straight line. No matter how big the underground cave is, it will have an edge. If we keep walking, we will always find a way out."
With a clear idea and direction, Squad Leader Zhao immediately perked up. He pointed the torch in one direction and said, "Straight ahead, move out."
Then he took off running. Liu Squad Leader and I were supporting Hu Aiguo, already exhausted. The worst off was Liu Squad Leader, who stood barefoot on the nearly freezing stone ground, trembling all over just from standing still.
I angrily shouted towards the direction of the torch, "Come back! Are you trying to get yourself killed?"
I saw the torch stop ahead, and I quickly helped Liu Squad Leader put on Hu Aiguo's boots. At that moment, Hu Aiguo didn’t dare to say much; Liu Squad Leader was in bad shape, his feet losing heat too quickly, his face pale, and his body shaking uncontrollably.
Since the torch was too far away, I fumbled in the dark to help Liu Squad Leader put on the boots. His feet were as cold as ice, and there was no blood oozing from the wounds on the soles. I thought if this continued, he would lose both feet. Just as I was finishing with Liu Squad Leader, the torch returned. Without looking up, I quickly tied the shoelaces by the firelight and wrapped Hu Aiguo's feet with several layers of his own clothing. He could avoid putting weight on his feet, but he would still feel cold.
Once I finished, I straightened up to give Zhao Squad Leader a piece of my mind. It was infuriating; even if he wasn't carrying anything heavy, he should at least consider our pace. This whole journey had been about shaking us off; what good was it to run fast when he couldn't even remember the path he'd taken? Leaving him alone here would be a disaster. However, when I saw the expressions on their faces—those three looked entranced, focused yet unfocused—it became hard to scold him. It was difficult to tell if they were crying or laughing; it felt like their souls had left their bodies, leaving only shells behind that were frozen in place.
It was terrifying. What I feared most at that moment was someone losing control among us; now it seemed three people were having issues at once. My throat felt dry as I wanted to shout out to release my frustration and wake them up; otherwise, I might be driven to madness by them first.
At that moment, I noticed Liu Squad Leader's eyes flicker slightly as he said to me, "They're coming."
"Who’s coming?!" I couldn't help but burst out. What kind of vague nonsense was that at a time like this?
"Listen. Their footsteps," Liu Squad Leader said, fear etched on his pale face.
