I first thought of Xiao Guolin and Cao Mingzhe. Could it be them? However, after glancing at Liu Squad Leader's expression, I quickly dismissed that idea. I placed both hands over my ears to enhance my hearing. I realized that ever since we fell underground, my hearing had drastically declined; several times, others heard strange noises before I did.
The space was still filled with the sound of iron balls rolling, not only from a distance but also from the direction of the passage. It seemed that the ball-shaped creatures were continuously emerging. I turned my head in the opposite direction of the cave entrance, and a sound different from the rolling of the creatures appeared. It shouldn't have been just one; it sounded like a multitude coming from a far-off direction, dense and overwhelming, as if countless people were rushing toward us from different angles.
Yes, it was that "clattering" sound of footsteps. My hair stood on end, and my muscles tensed involuntarily. I glanced at Liu Squad Leader and said, "What’s coming will come sooner or later; you have nowhere to run now unless you go back into the passage. If you don’t have the guts to go back, then witness the miracle with me. I can assure you that what’s coming is definitely not a ghost."
I raised my cold weapon. Zhao Squad Leader's eyes were fixed ahead as he slowly backed up to my side. I heard him mumbling something under his breath, his face twitching oddly like rippling water. I withdrew my fearful gaze; I felt that we were all monsters at this moment, at least moving closer to monstrosity, otherwise we wouldn't have survived here until now.
"Dong!" I heard Liu Squad Leader knock on his helmet. The sound was loud and echoed far away; it seemed he had taken off his helmet to use as a weapon. In a situation where life could vanish in an instant, concerns about skull fractures were trivial. I stopped looking at anyone else and focused my eyes ahead, curious about what was rushing toward us. But I didn’t expect it to be friendly; I was already prepared to fight against demons.
Soon, some lights appeared in the distance—white and constantly flickering as they approached us. Gradually, I became intrigued; these white lights seemed to be cold light sources, like fluorescence. This was getting more interesting by the moment.
Unfortunately, the interesting part ended too quickly when a giant reptile with a white fluorescent gland on its back came into view.
"Wow, what a huge Millipede!" Liu Squad Leader exclaimed dramatically. There was not a hint of fear in his voice; it was quite mocking.
If Hu Aiguo hadn’t been in between us, I would have kicked him right away and told him that this creature was what dragged us down to this point. Damn it.
Yes, it was a giant Millipede. It measured about two meters long, its body nearly transparent with a light brown hue, and its nearly one-foot-long antennae waved incessantly while countless legs seemed hollow, making a "clatter" sound as it moved. When this Millipede reached about ten meters away from us, it suddenly stopped and rapidly waved its antennae before pouncing on a ball-shaped creature on the ground.
This mutated Tide Worm had an exoskeleton as hard as iron; when curled up into a ball, it was seamless and appeared impenetrable to me. The Giant Millipede clearly couldn't break through the Tide Worm's iron shell; it kept striking its antennae against the ball-shaped creature at an increasing frequency. Moments later, its two venomous jaws suddenly pierced into the Tide Worm's body. I couldn't see how it breached the armor, but shortly after its fangs entered, the ball-shaped creature seemed to give up resisting and unfurled itself. Then, like a deflated balloon, its body shriveled down to become just a layer pressed against its exoskeleton.
This process was incredibly fast—so fast that we hadn't even recovered from our shock before it finished its quick meal and began waving its antennae at us incessantly. At that moment, I felt my bones turn to jelly; I hoped that when this creature attacked me with its venomous jaws, not only would my body lose all resistance but also my brain would shut down—otherwise, living would be worse than dying. At the same time, I no longer blamed Liu Squad Leader for his earlier outburst.
Just when my legs felt weak, Liu Squad Leader exploded again. He shoved Hu Aiguo toward me and waved his helmet while shouting defiantly, "Look how tough you are! You can even break open that bug's shell! I'm hungry too—let’s see who can eat whom!"
He charged forward.
Hu Aiguo pushed him, and the whole weight came crashing down on me, nearly overwhelming my already weakened body. I was both angry and resentful, too lazy to care about him; if he wanted to show off and go die first, then let him. It was just a matter of timing. From the sound of it, there were countless Giant Millipedes around, and I estimated that the four of us wouldn't even be enough to fill their gaps.
Unexpectedly, in the blink of an eye, he ran back, cursing under his breath, "Damn it, damn it..."
I steadied Hu Aiguo and looked up, cursing as well, "Damn it."
Within the light of the torch, my eyes were filled with Giant Millipedes. A few of them had raised half their bodies, their antennae waving violently while their venomous jaws gleamed as they opened and closed repeatedly. My hand gripping the gun trembled violently; for the first time, I felt death so close to me, and it was likely that I would die with full awareness. What a hellish scene that would be.
I let out a strange laugh. "Anyone who wants to die under the muzzle can come forward; if not, I won't leave any bullets for him."
"I do," Hu Aiguo volunteered first.
"Good." I aimed the muzzle at him. "Now, let's wait until it bites you."
"No, I have something to say," Hu Aiguo said in a panic.
"Damn," I quickly moved the muzzle away. My trembling hand might accidentally fire at any moment.
"This thing can't go into water," Hu Aiguo continued. "If we find water, we'll be saved."
"You think I don't know that this thing is afraid of water? But where is there any water here?" I retorted angrily.
Suddenly, Zhao Squad Leader pointed in a direction. "There's water over there."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
"Then let's go." I said.
That was a thoughtless remark; how could we go with so many Giant Millipedes surrounding us?
Zhao Squad Leader clearly hadn't considered this issue. The moment I finished speaking, he took action. He lowered the torch and charged toward one direction, specifically toward a Giant Millipede that was rearing its head menacingly. Zhao Squad Leader moved quickly and unexpectedly; none of us anticipated it, and not a single person kept pace with him.
Evidently, the Millipedes weren't keeping up with him either. When the torch touched one of the Millipedes, something we never expected happened. The Giant Millipede ignited like a handful of oil-soaked hay, bursting into flames that shot up a meter high. Almost instantly, several nearby Millipedes were set ablaze, and the cluster of Giant Millipedes scattered in panic, clearing the area completely.
