I shrugged nonchalantly. "It doesn't matter to me; what I care about is the quality of the items."
This statement should be safe, and afterward, I looked at Wu Qitai with ease.
"The safety is assured; otherwise, we wouldn't be involved," Wu Qitai concluded the topic with just two simple sentences. "The key point now is the additional conditions. We must fulfill these conditions before proceeding with the transaction." He leaned closer to me.
"What are your additional conditions? Also, what guarantees can you provide for this transaction? I won't complete it here; the location must be one I specify." In this situation, I could only feign compliance.
"That's fine. We can conduct the transaction at any location you deem safe. However, we will set the time."
"You won't drag it out until next century, will you?"
"The agreed transaction time is still three months away; we will complete it within that period. Do you have any questions?"
I shook my head. "No problem."
"Good, then let's discuss the additional conditions."
Wu Qitai snapped his fingers, and a taller individual handed him a map. Wu Qitai unfolded the map in front of me, revealing a transportation map of Guizhou, China. He pointed to a location in the southwest of Guizhou: "We require you to go there and do something."
Seeing the map he opened brought a sense of relief to my heart, and hearing him say that made my earlier concerns vanish into thin air. I had no intention of helping them; I just needed to find out what Xiao Guolin was trading with them before I left. Even if I couldn't get that information, I wasn't worried. My main task was to lure out those who were trading with Xiao Guolin so we could take action—either through threats or incentives—to obtain information about what Xiao Guolin was trading. I was already waiting for that person to appear; I had reason to believe that the young man who borrowed my ID would return with some knowledge. It made no sense for those involved in this big deal not to participate in the discussion.
"Mr. Zhang has quite a reputation in the archaeology field, especially influential in the southwest; this task shouldn't be too difficult for you," Wu Qitai continued pointing at that spot on the map. "Ah Xiang will provide you with specific details once you arrive there."
At this point, I began to understand what Bai Ta meant by additional conditions. "You want me to help you rob a tomb?"
"Mr. Zhang wouldn't refuse, would he?" Wu Qitai's expression darkened.
Since I wasn't actually going to do it anyway, agreeing wouldn't hurt. I muttered under my breath and shook my head: "I can agree. However, I'm concerned about the safety of the items involved; I'd like you to provide me with some information."
Wu Qitai removed his hand from the map, stood up, and paced a few steps before suddenly looking at me: "Xiao Guolin didn't tell you what he bought, did he?"
I maintained my composure, but he saw through my facade—perhaps because I was too fixated on pursuing this question. I couldn't answer him and remained silent.
"That's fine; after fulfilling the additional conditions, I'll tell you," Wu Qitai said with a sly smile. "By then, perhaps you'll be ready with your token and final payment. When I present that item before you, it will surely surprise you. I guarantee it."
I opened my mouth, shook my head in frustration, and gave up on the pointless questioning.
"Where are you staying? If you haven't booked a hotel, you can stay here. You can all set off together in a few days," Wu Qitai said, pointing at me and the person named Ah Xiang.
I shook my head. "No need. I'll head back right away; just tell me how to contact you."
"Beipanjiang Town. My people will be there in five days. Do you have any questions?"
"If I arrive late, can you have them wait for me a bit?" I thought I should act convincingly. "I need to find a few helpers. Are your people professional?"
"Not exactly professional, but they're not afraid of dying."
"That's useless. You'll need to provide the funds, and it won't be a small amount. If the mission can't be completed due to funding issues, the additional conditions will be void."
"Understood."
At that moment, the young man who had brought me returned, handing my ID to Wu Qitai while giving him a slight nod. Wu Qitai smiled as he handed my ID back to me and said to the young man, "It's fine; he's one of us. You can go back to your business."
After sending the young man away, he took out a bottle of red wine from the cabinet and raised it lightly. "Shall we celebrate?"
I nodded indifferently.
As Wu Qitai poured the wine, I glanced at the room's door several times. The young man had come back alone. This was far from what we had anticipated; where were the people I was supposed to lure out?
Just as I took the glass and locked eyes with Wu Qitai, I suddenly understood what was going on. Putting down my glass, I asked Wu Qitai, "Besides Ah Xiang, who else is going? The number of people shouldn't be too many; it's useless otherwise."
"I respect the opinions of professionals; my people won't exceed five."
"Alright then, I'll head back to prepare." With that, I walked toward the door. At the entrance, I turned around and said to Wu Qitai, "You're the one dealing with Xiao Guolin, aren't you?"
Wu Qitai smiled cryptically but did not respond.
Ah Xiang escorted me to the hotel entrance, where a taxi conveniently pulled up beside me. I opened the door and got in; before I could say anything, the taxi started moving. Without needing to see his face, I recognized him by his large head. Fatty gave me a thumbs-up through the rearview mirror.
The taxi obediently drove through two intersections before suddenly speeding through a red light. After turning a few corners, Fatty pointed to a villa with a yard ahead. "Once you're inside, close the curtains. I have the key; don't open the door for anyone who knocks." As he spoke, he tossed a set of keys into my lap.
The car stopped for a brief moment, dropping me off before driving away. I entered the room and pulled the curtains shut, finally having time to examine the place. There were at least four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. The living room, storage room, and dining area were all present. Upon opening one of the bedrooms, a faint scent of perfume wafted out, causing me to angrily kick the door shut. This place was Fatty's den of debauchery; I recognized that perfume from when Fatty brought it back.
This Fat Man really knew how to enjoy himself; it was practically a VIP treatment. Just thinking about it made me feel resentful. I lay on the sofa in the living room, waiting for Fatty while fuming.
My brain was in a state of excitement; things were progressing unexpectedly smoothly, just as I had envisioned. I was already considering my next move, how to extract the information we wanted from Wu Qitai.
It took over an hour for Fatty to show up. When he finally entered, he cautiously peeked through the curtain before confirming it was safe to turn back to me. "Hey Qiangzi, you’ve landed a big job in no time."
I asked, confused, "What big job?"
"Grave robbing. You agreed to it, didn’t you?"
