Fatty's antics were quite a headache for me, but when it came to critical moments, he still knew how to act appropriately. Noticing my serious and cautious expression, Fatty reluctantly mouthed to me, "This isn't over. You owe me a satisfactory explanation later, or else..."
At this point, Fatty let out a threatening "hmph" and turned to stand beside me.
Tang Yumo approached and said, "The explosion just now scared off the remaining Long-Tailed Monsters. I saw their escape direction was towards the Underground River. They won't scatter for now, so we need to take them out while they're gathered together. If they spread out, it will be much harder for us to eliminate them completely. We especially can't let them cross the river; we can't allow them to expand their territory."
I made a gesture for a pause.
"Our goal is to obtain the Specimen, not to go on a killing spree here. Also, what exactly is going on? Why are there so many Long-Tailed Monsters gathered here? Don't tell me it's just a coincidence; what are you hiding from us?"
"I told you before, we absolutely cannot let surface creatures enter the Underground Cavern. It will not only disrupt the ecological balance here but also cause mutations among the species. You encountered Long-Tailed Monsters last time; you should have some impression of these creatures. Didn't you notice any changes in them?"
Long-Tailed—so that's what they called these monsters. It was quite fitting.
Of course, I had noticed the changes in these creatures between our two encounters. Their eyes had shifted from blood-red to blue, and surprisingly, there was an expression in their eyes. Fear was indeed one of those expressions. However, during my first encounter with the Long-Tailed Monsters, they had only conveyed coldness and madness. Even under heavy fire, there hadn’t been a hint of expression on their faces. That was normal; aside from humans, I had never heard of any other creature displaying facial expressions in nature.
"Is that why you want to go on a killing spree and wipe out the Long-Tailed Monsters? Your explanation is too far-fetched; I'm sorry, but I can't accept it. Moreover, I don't believe we have the capability to kill them all. While this fire poses a threat to us, it is even more harmful to them. Once we leave this advantageous environment, we would stand no chance against them and could easily be wiped out ourselves. Let me reiterate our objective: find the Specimen and get out of this cursed place immediately."
But my words did not sway Tang Yumo's determination.
"The situation has changed now. The Specimen you brought in is already causing problems; finding it won't change anything. We can only kill all the Long-Tailed Monsters and Giant Bats; otherwise, we will face serious trouble."
"What? Besides the Long-Tailed Monsters, you want to kill something else?"
"Yes. A very large Bat; both of these creatures need to be eliminated."
"Are you saying that we—just a dozen or so old and weak individuals—are supposed to kill the two most powerful creatures in this area?"
Seeing Tang Yumo nodding seriously, I couldn't help but laugh.
"I thought you were joking, but it seems you're not. It looks like you've lost your mind." At this point, I certainly wouldn't be polite with them anymore. "I'm not interested in your action plan and won't be joining. If your goal isn't to retrieve the Specimen, then we should head back. The situation here has spiraled out of control, and we need help. You should have your leader send more people down. Staying here is just waiting for death, and going after them is simply courting disaster."
A faint smile appeared on Tang Yumo's face. "We can't go back."
Hearing this made my heart sink. I looked up.
The fire on the ceiling and the ground was still raging. Even though we were far from the flames, we could still feel the heat searing our skin. The firelight illuminated everything around us.
Not far from us was a narrow stone staircase that was steeper and harder to climb than a ladder. At the end of the staircase, the iron door that had been open inward was now closed without us noticing when it happened. The firelight cast a dark, oppressive glow on the door.
This oppressive light brought about a deathly silence. Each of us stared at that path back, that one door leading to life. It seemed the Hakka People were determined to force us into submission, even going so far as to burn their boats.
In the silence, I raised an arm to block Fatty ’s chest. Among us, Fatty had the worst temper; he was the most likely to explode. I needed to stop him first to prevent him from ruining my plan. There was something he didn't know; at least our group was unaware.
However, Fatty didn’t act impulsively; instead, he looked at me with an unusually calm expression.
I glanced at Fatty, lowered my arm from his chest, and said to Tang Yumo slowly, "Since that's the case, let's clarify what’s ahead."
As soon as I finished speaking, a gun was pointed at a Hakka Man's head with a click as the hammer cocked.
It was me; my hand had long been itching to act. The moment I saw those unsettling eyes in the stone chamber, I felt an urge to draw my gun.
In that instant when I pulled out my gun, Fatty darted forward. His Straight Blade had already lost its edge after being half-damaged earlier; it couldn't cut through anything effectively anymore. But no matter what weapon it was, it depended on who wielded it. His target was Tang Yumo; Fatty lunged forward with his knife aimed at her neck.
I really didn't understand what Xiao Ting saw in Fat Man; he clearly had no sense of cherishing others. As he charged forward, his knife didn’t stop for a moment. By the time he restrained Tang Yumo, he had already cut a deep gash into her neck, blood gushing out.
Although I hadn’t given Jack a heads-up beforehand, the American Guy reacted quickly. The moment I moved, he stepped back slightly, bringing three Hakka People into his line of fire. Even Xiao Ting drew her gun, uncertainly pointing it here and there.
The Vietnamese had just collaborated with the Hakka People and seemed to have developed some fondness for them. After coming over during my conversation with Tang Yumo, he appeared unsure of where his allegiance lay. Our positions were clearly defined against the Hakka People with noticeable gaps between us; meanwhile, the Vietnamese stood right in between us like an outsider trying to fit in.
But at the moment I drew my gun, A San jumped behind me, leaning out to point a knife at Hakka Man. What a typical fence-sitter.
I silently scorned this guy in my heart, keeping my eyes fixed on Hakka Man. "Actually, you don't need to cover your face. I didn't see your appearance; I only saw your eyes."
With that, I extended my left hand and grabbed the black cloth covering his face, slowly pulling it down.
It was a stranger's face. Dark, angular, rugged, and quite ordinary. What was extraordinary were his glowing eyes—too bright, the brightest pair I had ever seen. They left a deep impression on me.
"Do you know him?" Fatty asked me in surprise.
"No, but I've seen him. He almost killed me in Zhenfeng County."
"Kill him!" (To Be Continued...)
