We set off to the upper reaches of Underground River. Instead of trying to find two monsters, head to the habitat of the Hakka People in the Underground Cavern, where there are boats. Regarding the way to find Specimen, I, Fatty and Jack have a rare unified opinion. Our plan is to first walk upstream against the Underground River to the habitat of the Hakka People in the Underground Cavern, and then take a boat down the river to get ashore from the place where we originally escaped from the pursuit of Heimanluo. That's closest to where Jack and I lost our backpacks. Although we will inevitably face the attack of Monster while walking back, we are more confident in solving Long-Tailed Monster and Giant Bat than Heimanluo. Especially on the wide river, the only thing that can threaten us is Giant Bat. Although attacks from the air are more difficult to defend, Giant Bat has an obvious flaw, that is, they are more afraid of fire. And we have torches. However, we have added another injured person to our team, the Hakka People who was hit hard by Fatty continuously. Fatty That knife cut his aorta, blood spurted out, and almost cut Hakka People's throat. It must be like this, otherwise there will be no need to save him. But this also made HakkaPeople give up the idea of confrontation. When doing this, there is not a single word Fatty before or after. But from his unabashed expression, I could see the subtext: If they didn't agree, I'd kill them all. When I secretly blamed him, Fatty blinked slyly: The knife was blunt, and the blood vessels were cut by pulling, how could it kill him? How can they be obedient without seeing any blood? Fatty Nowadays, I am not sure whether it is true or false. But I think he should be more restrained in front of me and Xiao Ting, at least he won't kill anyone in front of us.
What I couldn't understand was that one of the Hakka people had disappeared—the one who had slid down the rope and nearly died from the fall. I had seen another Hakka person drag him to the edge of the stone wall. Although it was a gruesome sight, I could see he was still breathing. After that, the two of us who were able to move were too exhausted to dodge the dripping fire oil from the ceiling and the unexpected encounters with the Long-Tailed Monster. Soon, we lost all sense of direction and had no energy or desire to care for the half-dead man.
However, the cleanup crew—three people who went to burn the bodies of the Long-Tailed Monsters—returned to tell me they found no trace of that Hakka person, not even a body or bloodstains. If he had been killed by the Long-Tailed Monster, there should have at least been a corpse and blood. Had he been taken away by the Long-Tailed Monster?
But we didn't have time to search for his whereabouts. As Fatty put it, these Yelang people deserved their fate.
Hearing Fatty's words gave me a surreal feeling, as if I were witnessing a scene from the Western Han Dynasty, where soldiers marched into Yelang with weapons drawn. It seemed Fatty agreed with Tang Yumo's assertion that this group of Hakka people was descended from the Yelang people.
I remained noncommittal on this matter. Our most urgent task was to find an exit. Everything else could wait. I believed that as long as we found an exit and could leave the Underground Cavern, we would alleviate our greatest crisis. After all, outside there was a Search and Rescue Team from Hong Kong waiting for us.
Before leaving, I took one last deep look at the exit near the ceiling; the iron door coldly separated two worlds. I didn’t climb up to take a look, nor did I waste time trying to blow open the iron door. Our explosives were insufficient to breach it.
The journey from here to where the Hakka people resided in the Underground Cavern was long. When we first left this place, we had two severely injured members; now, returning, we still had two severely injured members.
One was Fumi, whose broken leg could not endure prolonged and intense trekking. Even though we fashioned him a crutch, he still needed help. Someone had to carry him for a while when his injured leg could no longer support him, alleviating his pain and allowing him to regain his strength.
Another issue was the Hakka People that Fat Man almost had in his hands. It seemed that Fatty hadn’t misled me about one thing: the wound on this Hakka People's neck was not fatal, just quite frightening to look at. Blood had sprayed everywhere, and I thought this Hakka People was doomed. However, Fatty kicked and stomped him without mercy, and he was sometimes conscious, sometimes unconscious, completely slumped over Hakka Man A-Yong's back as we made our way.
This gave us an overwhelming advantage in strength against the Hakka People. Even without modern weapons, defeating them was a foregone conclusion, which caused Tang Yumo and A-Yong to lose their fighting spirit; they remained despondent throughout the journey.
As I had anticipated, the Long-Tailed Monster did not give up its attacks on us. However, instead of a large-scale suicide attack, they adopted a strategy of harassment and ambush. The Underground Cavern was filled with stalactites of varying lengths hanging from the Ceiling, providing perfect camouflage for the Long-Tailed Monster. They could even hide one among them, launching surprise attacks that left us defenseless.
Their first attempt at this kind of assault nearly cost us dearly. One Long-Tailed Monster, as we passed by, suddenly swung down its long tail in an attempt to ensnare or lift someone away. Unfortunately for it, it chose the largest target in our group: Fatty.
The tail wrapped around Fatty, but instead of lifting him off the ground, it allowed him to grab hold of it. Thus began a struggle between man and beast across a gap of more than ten meters. In the end, Jack fired a quick burst and killed that Long-Tailed Monster.
Currently, one thing that Tang Yumo insisted on was burning the bodies of the slain monsters. My understanding was that she was reinforcing her view that these Monsters were products of the Hakka People Secondary Mutation. She wouldn’t bother to burn these monster corpses if they were simply monsters; it made sense only if they were indeed products of the Hakka People Secondary Mutation.
Fortunately, where we encountered the ambush by the Long-Tailed Monster, we were not far from the Underground River. The nearby Wood Chip Dam provided us with ample fuel; otherwise, we would not have been able to support Tang Yumo's proposal.
After the first ambush by the Long-Tailed Monster, we naturally became extremely cautious, with at least two One-Eyed Beast Flashlights constantly illuminating the Ceiling. However, this significantly slowed our pace.
During our first break, we had already reached the edge of the Underground River. We were not taking the same route as before; this time we had come down without water and needed to reach the Underground River to address our drinking needs. Although food was also scarce, I wasn't worried about going hungry since there were things to eat in the Underground River.
We sat around a campfire with the Hakka People, not out of concern that they might run away—after all, they couldn't outrun bullets—but for safety reasons. The resting spot we chose had a high Ceiling, so we didn't have to worry about the Long-Tailed Monster ambushing us from above, but we still had to be on guard against attacks from other directions. The Hakka People had been disarmed and would be defenseless if we were attacked.
After eating a bit, we prepared to rest for a while around the fire.
The night watch—of course, it was all night here—was assigned to me, Fatty, and Jack. (To Be Continued...)
