"What's next?"
I nervously stared at Jack, waiting for his next words. I didn't think that the only thing making him hopeless and helpless was that Protrusion. Unless that Protrusion was something even more terrifying than Heimanluo.
However, Jack closed his eyes. It seemed he was brewing some emotions, preparing to deliver a fatal blow. Yet, the fatal blow never came, and Jack's eyes remained shut, as if he were ready to sleep here forever.
I kicked Fatty, who was sitting on the ground. "What exactly is that thing? Is it that door?"
Fatty didn't look up or answer me. Instead, it was Tang Yumo who replied. "It's still the same, still in that place. We haven't approached it, not even a step."
It took a moment for my mind to catch up before I exclaimed, "Damn, so we ran here for nothing?"
"No, at least we got rid of Heimanluo." The two seemingly powerful men were now deflated, while this Hakka Girl, who seemed both friend and foe, appeared more composed.
I gathered my thoughts, one hand holding the One-Eyed Beast Flashlight aimed at our target direction while the other reached out in the opposite direction. "That way is the entrance; we ran from there to here. A straight line forward leads to our destination. If we haven't miscalculated the direction, then it's just that the target is too far away. As long as we keep walking, we will definitely reach it."
"In that case, you should turn off the Flashlight first. The distance is too great; resources need to be used wisely, or we won't make it there," Jack said as if coming back to his senses.
I shrugged at Fatty. "Put out the torch."
Seeing Fatty's confused and reluctant expression, I quickly explained. "We still have a few batteries left, but we only have this one torch. We might need fire down there; let's not waste it on lighting."
Upon hearing this, Fatty jumped up and stomped out the torch.
"That's a good point. As long as you have reason on your side, he won't go against you. Of course, Jack is the exception; those two are truly lifelong enemies."
With that, the only light left was from my One-Eyed Beast Flashlight. The torches had dimmed, but their glow illuminated a wide area, providing a comforting presence in the darkness. When the flames extinguished, the light faded instantly, and everyone fell into an involuntary silence, heads bowed as they packed their things. Even eye contact was scarce.
I shouldered our only backpack. When Jack lifted his head, I subtly gestured towards Tang Yumo with my eyes. Jack frowned, his expression strange as he nodded slightly.
"Brother Gang, you follow behind Jack and Tang Yumo. I'll take the lead. Do you have a Glow Stick?" I saw Fatty reluctantly nod. "Then light one up. We need better illumination. Stay close together. If anything happens, shout loudly. Get ready to move out."
Fatty pulled a Glow Stick from his pocket and snapped it; it instantly emitted a pale blue light. Although the Glow Stick's light was also diffused, it lacked warmth and safety, appearing rather eerie instead.
"Stay alert in front; don't rush in. This isn't a race; speed isn't our priority right now. You have injured and disabled people behind you—if we lose them, we won't be able to find them again."
I nodded. "You too."
Jack stood between Fatty and me, glancing back and forth between our faces several times before suddenly shouting, "Damn it, you two look like you're getting cozy! I've been carrying this burden for so long!"
I felt my face flush with embarrassment as I turned away angrily. What was that about?
Fatty jokingly implied that I had something going on with Jack, mainly to provoke him. But Jack's expression suggested he might be serious; he genuinely thought there was something unclear between me and Fatty.
What I couldn't tolerate most was how those two liked to throw dirt on my name; every time something messy happened, it somehow involved me.
"Come on, keep up with the captain." "Damn it." I heard Fatty's unwilling voice and Jack's curses trailing behind me.
Turning back, I saw Fatty poking Jack with a torch, urging him to move faster. The recently extinguished torch still radiated heat, making Jack quicken his pace.
I glanced at them and quickly turned away. American Guy was just asking for trouble; he was already half-dead and still dared to tease Fatty. I couldn't help him; Fatty's temperament was not something I could manage. I could tolerate it, but he wouldn't last even a second. A couple of pokes were just his way of bonding.
With a clear direction ahead, my sense of direction was quite good, and I was confident about reaching our destination. However, out of habit, I made a mark on the ground every so often, similar to the one Jack had made—a simple arrow indicating the way forward.
After resting once and fully replenishing my health bar, I noticed that the three trailing behind me were in bad shape. While I had been asleep, they had played with Flare and then got spooked by something they saw, leaving no one able to sleep.
I felt like we hadn't been walking for too long, but the distance between me and the three behind was growing. I had no choice but to stop and wait. It seemed they were not only moving slowly but also taking a winding path; they must have been too exhausted.
As Jack approached, I said to him, "You guys should take a break; if this keeps up, you'll only get slower. It's inefficient."
With Tang Yumo's help, Jack plopped down on the ground. "Of course you're not tired after eating and resting well. Boss, we're human, not machines. We've been walking for six hours; if you don't call for a stop soon, someone might collapse."
"Has it really been that long?" I smiled apologetically. "My biological clock—sigh—seems to be malfunctioning."
"Modesty aside. Your biological clock isn't malfunctioning; it's just out of sync with ours. Yours is non-human," Fatty chimed in from the back, expressing his strong dissatisfaction upon seeing me.
Although all the food was in my backpack, I felt as if I'd already consumed my share—specifically that piece of roasted meat Fatty had handed me six hours ago. Watching the three of them enjoy their roasted meat made me swallow hard. "You guys take a break; I'm not sleepy. I'll keep watch."
Keeping a vigil should be unnecessary. There is not a single ghost in this place. In fact, what I am keeping vigil is Tang Yumo. If she leaves our sight, this girl might cause something bad. I don't dare to let her leave our sight. I think Fatty and Jack also understood this. Neither of them raised any objections and lay down with the little barbecued jerky in their mouths. The temperature in this space is also very low. I don't feel cold when I move around, but I can't stand it when I lie down. Driven by the low temperature, the two lifelong enemies unconsciously moved closer to each other. I couldn't bear to look directly at that scene. Tang YumoA person was lying on my right side, curled up like a shrimp. When I saw it, I thought it would be weird if she fell asleep and wasn't freezing, so I took off my coat and covered her with it. At this time, I felt there was a little light in Tang Yumo’s eyes.
