"What's wrong?" I asked Jack with concern. His gaze truly worried me; I didn't want to see a teammate break down at the moment when hope was within reach.
Jack was holding the Glow Stick that Fatty had initially lit up. Currently, his Glow Stick emitted the faintest light, and he was positioned slightly away from Tang Yumo. As a result, I could only see Jack's expression clearly.
Even though they were supposed to stand side by side, Tang Yumo was almost engulfed in darkness, and I could only make out her vague silhouette.
I tilted the Flashlight slightly towards Jack and noticed that although his eyes were glazed over, his face displayed a strange mix of excitement, fear, and even satisfaction.
"Maybe it's not spatial distortion; maybe it’s—"
Jack seemed to want to explain this physical phenomenon to me but struggled to find the right words. While he racked his brain for a specific term, his gaze shifted away from my face and focused intently on something to my left.
Fatty was on my right, one hand pressed against the stone wall. Jack and Tang Yumo stood between me and Fatty, with Jack closer to the wall but maintaining a step's distance from it.
This meant that Jack and I were facing each other at a close distance. Just by tilting the Flashlight slightly towards him, I could see his expression clearly. Especially when he looked into the darkness on my left. That focused gaze, as if staring at something tangible, sent a chill down my spine.
I instinctively turned my face to the left.
" Fatty, can you stop trying to scare us? People can die from being scared," I spat out.
I was truly fed up with Fatty. I had no idea when he had moved to my left so quietly. He must have been planning to scare me senseless. How reckless could he be? Even in such dire circumstances, he still thought it was funny to play these kinds of tricks.
"Who is it? Who scared you? With your courage, I really wouldn't dare to scare you, afraid I'd frighten you to death." The voice of Fatty came from my right.
I admit I instantly lost control. Before my legs gave way, my body jumped to the right. The force was completely uncontrollable, crashing both me and Fatty against the stone wall.
Fatty wasn't prepared for this. My jump was quite forceful; although I didn't knock him down immediately, the dull thud of his head hitting the wall echoed clearly and terrifyingly in my ears.
If it had been my head making such close contact with the stone, I would either be dead or unconscious. Yet Fatty was still able to shout.
"Damn it. When did this guy follow us?"
It seemed that the collision not only failed to knock him out but didn't even affect his vision or thinking. Fatty quickly redirected his curses toward another Fatty.
At this moment, the original Fatty standing to my left remained still, while I and the other Fatty were pressed against the stone wall as if we were victims of some bizarre wall slam by a savage. Perhaps Fatty's situation was a bit better than mine? His large head was spinning wildly, unsure if he was looking for something or trying to find an escape route. However, his aimless scratching against the wall indicated that he was equally tense and confused.
Jack took a few steps back with a strange expression. But I could tell he was being pulled back by Tang Yumo beside him. The two of them were practically conjoined; Jack was very responsible, tightly wrapping one arm around Tang Yumo's shoulder, providing support while ensuring she couldn't move away from him.
The only one remaining motionless was Fatty, who stood alone in the darkness. The light from two glow sticks illuminated him, revealing only his vague outline. Suppressing my fear, I raised my trembling hand holding the One-Eyed Beast Flashlight and swung it to shine directly on this Fatty.
He faced me, staring directly at the blinding flashlight without flinching or squinting, his expression grave. As I approached, Fatty's face displayed either a mischievous smirk or a chilling ferocity. At that moment, although his fierceness had become somewhat restrained, it felt even more terrifying.
"He has no reaction to the light, did you see that? This is what I've been thinking about—parallel space. It's truly miraculous that we can see another Fatty in a different space!"
Jack's excitement left me both amused and bewildered. Out of curiosity, I had attended a public lecture on parallel dimensions, which was more speculative than scientific. My knowledge of the theory was limited, and my belief in it was even less. I was merely a spectator.
Jack had never seen Heimanluo transform into Fatty, but I had mentioned it before. What was going on with him? Instead of perceiving the two Fatty s before us as dangerous Heimanluo, he was thinking about the parallel dimension shrouded in mist. His mind was truly twisted.
Not only was Jack's expression and speech filled with excitement, but his body language also suggested he was eager to act. Fortunately, his other half remained calm and did not let Jack drag him along.
I felt a mix of anger and fear as I trembled, saying, "That's White Leopard; that's Heimanluo."
This statement immediately brought Jack back to his senses, but he quickly asked me a question that made my legs weak. "So which one is Heimanluo?"
I was pressed tightly against the stone wall next to Fatty. I shivered slightly, but Fatty suddenly poked its head out and shouted at Jack, "Don't think just because you're injured I won't go after you! Do you believe I'll break your other leg?"
Jack's flesh quivered as he turned to face the solitary Fatty. "This one is."
Seriously? Did we really need confirmation while risking a broken leg? Fatty had been by my side the whole time, constantly bantering. Heimanluo could barely speak human language; how could he possibly keep up with my banter?
At that moment, the Fatty standing in the darkness also confirmed its identity.
"Wait—"
It looked at me and struggled to utter a single word.
"Wait your sister," I retorted without hesitation, pulling out my gun from my waist.
The staircase leading to the altar's flat top was on Jack and Tang Yumo's side. At this point, having confirmed that the independent Fatty was not a projection of another Fatty from the parallel dimension, Jack and Tang Yumo leaned against the stone wall, fearfully gazing into the darkness where Fatty stood.
I shot a glance at Jack, who looked as frightened as a quail, and shouted angrily, "Run to the altar! No matter what that door looks like, blow it up!"
I rummaged through my backpack and pulled out a few grenades, handing them to Fatty. Given the current situation, it seemed I couldn't rely on Jack anymore.
Fatty didn't take the grenades; instead, he snatched the gun from my hand. "The one who destroys the Eternal Gate can only be you. It’s pointless for any of us to go up there. Get it together and don’t mess this up for us. We’re counting on you to save us."
I cursed under my breath, dropped my backpack, and turned to run toward the stairs. I knew there was no time to argue with Fatty; I had to give it my all to find the Eternal Gate and destroy it. Otherwise, we would face total annihilation.
