Jack's breath sprayed against the back of my neck, his teeth occasionally clicking together, sometimes rattling like a shiver. It reminded me of the vampires in Western movies.
But I had no time for nostalgia. Although carrying Jack slowed me down, I was confident in my endurance. As long as I started running, I wouldn't let the guy behind catch up to me. Back in school, long-distance running was my forte; once, I even lapped the second-place runner. There was no way Heimanluo could catch me.
Of course, that was assuming Heimanluo showed signs of weakness. When it was at its peak, I wouldn't have been so sure.
Right now, my biggest concern was Tang Yumo. She had taken off ahead of us, and she would definitely try to stop me from destroying Eternal Gate. I worried she might be up to something. After all, the place above was completely unfamiliar to us, but not necessarily to Tang Yumo.
“ Fatty!” I called him over. “I can't run fast; you need to hurry and catch up with Tang Family Girl. I'm worried she might cause trouble.”
Fatty muttered something under his breath. “You knew that girl was trouble from the start, yet you insisted on keeping her around. Now you're regretting it? If you can't handle her, just hand her over to me. At worst, we can toss her at Fork in the Road and let her deal with Big Black Pig.
It wouldn't be so bad now.”
“Stop talking nonsense and hurry up. Just control her; don't get rough.”
“Control her without being rough? You try it!”
"With that image of yours, just glaring at her would scare her half to death. Is there really a need to take action? I still have things I need her help with, so leave her to me."
I really didn't have any use for Tang Yumo, but I was worried that Fatty would find her and dispose of her right away. He was definitely not the type to show mercy, except when it came to Xiao Ting. What a strange guy.
Fatty huffed and ran past me, his upper body swaying wildly. It was no longer accurate to describe his movement as limping; he looked more like a gorilla, completely out of sync. It was awkward. The pain must have taken a heavy toll on him.
With his backpack on, he lit up a Glow Stick, and his swaying figure along with the light quickly disappeared from my sight, plunging me back into darkness.
It was then that I realized we had already run quite a distance; the Fire Sea behind us no longer provided enough light.
My Flashlight had broken, the bulb completely flattened. I still had a few Glow Sticks in my backpack, but Fatty had taken it with him.
I hurriedly turned back to Jack. "Turn on your Flashlight. Are you planning to let me feel my way in the dark?"
Jack was sucking in cold air through his teeth. "It's broken."
"Do you have anything that can provide light? Anything will do."
Jack simply responded with the sound of him sucking in cold air.
I regretted it so much. How could I have overlooked such a crucial matter?
But I couldn't afford to stop. Even though I hadn't heard the footsteps of Heimanluo behind us, it wouldn't give up on hunting us down; its relentless attitude made that clear. I had to keep running forward, even if it meant doing so in complete darkness.
However, the darkness did not last long. The moment light suddenly appeared and illuminated the ground beneath my feet, I found myself longing for the dark environment.
The light came from behind me. It was firelight, but even before it appeared, I could hear the heavy footsteps of Heimanluo. Yes, Heimanluo was catching up.
But it seemed that Heimanluo was in worse shape than I was. I was carrying Jack on my back; he was in a semi-conscious state and couldn’t even secure himself to me. I had to use both arms to tightly hold his legs to ensure he wouldn’t fall off. In this condition, I couldn’t possibly look back, but I could gauge Heimanluo's proximity by the sound of his footsteps.
His loud and heavy steps did not signify strength; rather, they indicated that he was losing power and control over his body’s agility.
Using the firelight to cast my shadow, I assessed the distance between Heimanluo and myself. There was no doubt that we were getting closer; the firelight grew brighter, and the stone steps became clearer.
If I abandoned Jack, I could probably outrun Heimanluo. But that thought flickered in my mind only to be dismissed immediately. I valued my life, but I equally valued the lives of my teammates. As long as there was a possibility, I would not abandon any of them.
At this moment, I hoped that Heimanluo would lose strength more quickly. There was no way for me to go faster; maintaining this speed was already pushing my physical limits. All I could do was wish for my opponent to weaken.
This steep and straight staircase felt interminably long, or perhaps it was just an illusion caused by my exhaustion. It seemed like I would never reach the end. Yet, the stairs around me grew brighter, and I could even feel the heat; the light and warmth emitted by the Humanoid Torch seemed ready to envelop and consume me.
Aside from focusing on the stone steps beneath me and running mechanically, I had neither the strength nor energy to glance at my surroundings or above. I feared that if my concentration wavered, I might give up.
It was already clear that I could not outrun Heimanluo; that beast had maintained this speed and state all along, with footsteps thundering closer to me. I still held onto one hope: that Fatty would succeed in finding the Eternal Gate at the altar's flat top and destroy it.
If the answer is 'no', then no matter how fast I run, it won't matter much. I don't believe any of us can escape the wrath of Heimanluo in the confined space of the altar. Of course, jumping down from above is an option, but that would be no different from dying at Heimanluo's hands.
A series of rapid gunshots rang out, and I felt bullets whizzing past my scalp. I instinctively ducked like a turtle. It was just a reflex, really; there was no practical purpose since I couldn't actually retract my head into my shell.
I was so moved and excited that I almost cried. Clearly, they hadn't found or destroyed the Eternal Gate.
The bullets must have hit Heimanluo behind me. That beast had been trailing me silently for quite some time, making me wonder if the fire had damaged its vocal cords. But this barrage of bullets not only halted its advance but also ignited its furious rage.
Heimanluo let out a roar like a wild beast. The sound nearly deafened me and almost knocked me off my feet.
"Run! I'm throwing a grenade!" came Fatty's shout from right in front of me.
My heart sank at those words. There was no doubt that Fatty was resorting to using a grenade because he hadn't found the Eternal Gate. But would it even be effective? As long as we couldn't kill it, it would still come after us to finish us off.
Was it Tang Yumo who caused the trouble? She came up early; where is she? The main reason I asked Fatty to come up was to control Tang Yumo, but he hasn’t managed to do that?
With a complicated mindset, I looked up and saw two glowing lights from Glow Sticks not far away on the stairs.
I was still within the range of the flames. Looking up from my position, darkness dominated the scene, and the light from the two Glow Sticks was not very noticeable. But I could still see Fatty and Tang Yumo standing at the top of the stairs. So, it meant that Fatty had managed to control Tang Yumo, but he hadn’t noticed the Eternal Gate. (To Be Continued...)
