I shook my head vigorously. "Can you understand this a bit better?"
"Sure," Jack leaned back, his face hidden once again in the shadows.
"However, I must make a statement first: we are only speculating; specific experiments cannot be conducted at this moment. The model being destroyed is one aspect, but more importantly, we are collecting data from the site of that energy release to prepare for potential future experiments."
Hearing the word "speculation" reminded me of Cao Mingzhe, who referred to it as guessing. How could this American guy be using the same approach? It all seemed like a shot in the dark.
"Don't be so vague. You don't need to say 'possibly'; you will definitely have follow-up experiments to figure out what this Energy Matrix is. That name sounds quite impressive—who came up with it? Energy Matrix? What’s it even for?"
"I can tell you what we can confirm. The purpose of this Energy Matrix is to collect or aggregate energy."
"Stop. Where is the energy being collected?" I immediately called a halt; Jack's explanation didn't hold up—there were too many gaps. "I admit my shop got struck by lightning, and it looks like yours did too, but the result was that everything was burned to ashes. Where did the energy go?"
"Yes, there should be an Energy Storage Device. Inside or beneath this Energy Matrix, there should be a device for storing energy, like a Large Battery. Of course, that's just an analogy. The Energy Matrix is only meant to aggregate energy; the receiver should be robust enough not to get damaged during the influx of massive energy. There should also be a powerful cooling system; otherwise, the Energy Matrix would turn into a giant furnace."
When Jack mentioned the energy receiver, my expression changed dramatically. Even though my face was flushed from the alcohol and illuminated by the light filtering through the wine glass, I could no longer tell if it was the wine or embarrassment that colored my cheeks. However, the shift in my expression and the involuntary twitching of my muscles made me feel like a monster.
Jack couldn't miss the change in my facial expression. His face suddenly emerged from the darkness. "Zhang. What do you know? What are you hiding from me?"
Yes, there was something—of course there was.
As I grew tense, my throat instinctively dried up; I couldn't quench the fire in my throat even with saliva. I needed something to drink; otherwise, the fire would ignite me.
It seemed that besides alcohol, Jack had nothing else to drink here. In front of the wine cabinet, I downed another large glass of red wine. The fire in my throat was extinguished, but the fire in my heart flared up instead. The effects of the alcohol were kicking in.
A piece of iron floated before my eyes! It was none other than the key to the Eternal Gate.
If there is anything in this world that can remain unscathed amidst thunder and explosions comparable to a nuclear blast, I believe that piece of iron can do it. If it cannot, then nothing else can.
The effects of the alcohol did not cloud my thinking; instead, it felt like an injection of adrenaline, granting me a powerful spatial imagination akin to that of Liu Squad Leader.
Above that piece of iron was a vast expanse resembling a jungle, known as the Yadan Landform Group. Surrounding it was an endless stretch of marshland.
The air was thick with moisture, making it impossible to see even a few meters away. The sun blazed down from above, scorching the land and the wetlands, but the humidity was not evaporated by the sunlight; it came from underground, surging up through countless pipes nearly a meter in diameter, forming columns of steam that shot towards the sky.
These columns of steam rapidly condensed into clouds at high altitudes, swirling and darkening until they seemed ready to crush the ground beneath them.
A crack of lightning split the darkness. No, it was countless bolts. An overwhelming spectacle unfolded as numerous lightning strikes simultaneously illuminated the scene. The bolts struck the center of the marshland, targeting the Yadan Landform Group. Yet, the Yadan Landform Group acted like a filter, allowing the colossal lightning strikes to pass through effortlessly and strike the piece of Hexagonal Iron below.
In an instant, that iron transformed as if it were molten in a furnace; its surface turned blood-red while remaining smooth and polished. It resembled a stubborn piece of iron that refused to melt in the furnace, much like the Monkey King trapped in Laozi's alchemical cauldron. The intricate patterns within the iron suddenly came to life, emerging like relief sculptures.
The immense energy coursed through this piece of iron and was directed underground, where it was stored somewhere.
Water. The icy lake water from underground surged over this piece of iron, but the lake could never cool it down. This was an endless cycle. Vast amounts of steam continuously rose from countless vents nearly a meter wide, once again forming dark clouds, storms, and lightning.
Scenes from my time at Lop Nur and Hakka People's Valley flashed before my eyes like slides in a projector; many mysteries and confusions suddenly became clear.
Especially puzzling was the water—both Lop Nur and Hakka People's Underground Cavern had vast and complex water diversion systems, with immense quantities of water endlessly flowing underground. Initially, this issue had been a riddle that baffled everyone. However, with Jack's seemingly casual hint, everything became clear. At least for me, that piece of iron and the underground water diversion system were no longer inexplicable.
I stood there before the liquor cabinet without turning around. What lay before me was not merely a European-style bar and liquor cabinet but rather a composite of Lop Nur and Hakka People's Valley—similar yet distinct in design. However, I felt no confusion; I could easily differentiate between them. They flowed freely in my mind and transformed into various combinations before my eyes.
Suddenly, a face appeared before me—a Caucasian face. Yes, it was Jack. I didn’t know when he had moved in front of me; he stood behind the bar, nervously watching me across the counter.
"Zhang, your condition is not good. What triggered you? Was it something I said? Or something else?"
In the past, a sudden face appearing and a voice distracting me could have easily caused the scene before me to collapse. But today, it didn't. I looked at Jack through everything in front of me—the Yadan Landform Group, iron, and a vast amount of water. Yes, what surrounded me the most was water, both on the ground and underground.
"Do you know Liu Squad Leader?" My tone returned to a relaxed state; I thought it would be hard for anything to shock me again. "You should have seen him, but you might not remember. You were lying in the helicopter while I almost got into a fight with a soldier down below. Yes, that was him—the one who made me useless when he came back to my shop."
Jack nodded seriously. "Of course I know him; I have his information and photos."
I mimicked Liu Squad Leader's manner from earlier, throwing each object out of my line of sight one by one. Liu Squad Leader had used hand gestures; I didn't, opting instead for the newly learned method of swiping on a touchscreen. I tapped an object with my index finger and lightly slid it away, causing it to fly out of my sight and mind.
Before me was a three-dimensional image, almost like a hologram, where each object's position was different—not only in flat space but also in depth. My hand danced in front of Jack like that of a tea picker. I could see Jack's face turn pale.
"I also know someone who has this ability—yes, it's Liu Squad Leader." With a wave of my hand, I dispersed the images before me and smiled at Jack.
