I took a deep breath. It seemed that the chances of success this time were slim, at least Tang Yumo had foreseen my success.
There was no one around us; the other three Hakka People huddled together, whispering something. From their expressions, it looked like they were comforting the person assigned to Fatty's group.
I could understand that. To the Hakka People, Fatty was a fearsome figure, and it was no surprise that being with him would be stressful.
I stared at Tang Yumo and quietly asked, "What happened next? After destroying the Eternal Gate, did I manage to escape?"
I noticed a warm expression appear on Tang Yumo's face. "Are you only thinking about yourself? You're invincible, but what about us? Have you considered how many people will be sacrificed for you?"
I was confused. Her words seemed contradictory. On one hand, I was invincible; on the other, I would lead to sacrifices. What did she mean?
However, I didn't want to anger her. Although she was unaware of the Antimatter Bomb, she knew my true intentions and the mission I was set to complete. I couldn't afford to provoke her and jeopardize my plans.
"Sister Tang, stay close to me once we go down. This place is more complex than your Hakka People's Underground Cavern. There’s an Underground Maze. I suspect we’ll likely get trapped inside. But I've figured out a way to navigate through the maze; if your people stick close to me, I'll lead you all out."
Upon hearing this, Tang Yumo's expression softened slightly.
I was actually quite intimidated by dealing with the Tang Family Girl. She was so cold, like an iceberg.
"We will follow you to the real Eternal Gate. Entering the Eternal Gate and achieving Dequantize is our main objective for this trip. I just hope you don't act recklessly before that; otherwise, our journey will be in vain."
"Of course, I want to see what the real Eternal Gate looks like too. I'll give you time for Dequantize. But you must keep this a secret; not everyone supports my plan to destroy the Eternal Gate."
"Alright. I promise you."
"Deal."
"This isn't a transaction!" A hint of anger returned to Tang Yumo's face.
A deafening roar interrupted our conversation. Two armed helicopters appeared overhead.
The helicopters did not descend but hovered above us, each carrying a pod underneath. Only the pods were lowered to the ground.
Before the pods touched down, several soldiers jumped out from inside. One soldier ran directly to Cao Mingzhe and shouted something at him.
I glanced away from Tang Yumo and ran towards Cao Mingzhe, needing to understand the situation. I couldn't just follow along blindly.
The noise from the helicopters was too loud; even when I reached them, I could only catch a few fragmented words: "No time, depart immediately."
Before I could ask anything, Cao Mingzhe shouted at me, "Those who have been assigned to teams, get on the craft immediately! The area ahead has been cleared; we’re going down now."
A craft? I turned around and realized that the pod beneath the helicopter was indeed a craft—a flat-bottomed Landing Craft. Two engines at the rear were on standby, and a Six-Barrel Gatling Gun was mounted at the front.
The first to rush onto the Landing Craft were several soldiers carrying two boxes of ammunition. They quickly took their positions for combat—two soldiers at the back and three at the front. I glanced around; the empty space in the middle could barely fit ten people.
I jumped onto the Landing Craft, my backpack colliding directly with Cao Mingzhe's face.
Cao Mingzhe patted my backpack and asked, "What’s so hard in here? I think you broke my nose."
I turned to look and realized I might have actually broken his nose; it had caved in a bit, and blood was gushing down.
"Old Cao, can you stop the bleeding first? Dying like this wouldn’t make you a martyr."
Cao Mingzhe touched his nose and finally noticed he was bleeding. Cursing under his breath, he pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket to plug his nose.
I patted my backpack and mouthed to him, "Gun."
Cao Mingzhe's tone was strange as he replied, "In the front. Just don't crash into me."
I sat at the very front, even though there was no space beneath my feet. It was manageable to hang the backpack in front of my chest. As I adjusted it, I suddenly remembered how Fatty would manage to get on the Landing Craft with his box. With ten people boarding, there was definitely no room for a box.
I stood up to look at another Landing Craft and realized my worries were unfounded. That craft wasn't full; only seven or eight people were seated. It seemed that those materials and physics experts didn't want to be test subjects, most of them waiting for us to secure our footing below before coming down.
After receiving a signal from the ground crew, the helicopter began to ascend. We swayed in the cabin like we were on a swing, and the feeling was even more thrilling than riding a roller coaster.
"Put on your goggles!" a soldier shouted while distributing windproof glasses.
I understood the importance of these goggles and quickly grabbed a pair, securing them over my eyes. Although they weren't necessary at the moment, without them during landing, I wouldn't be able to open my eyes at all.
The helicopter roared as it flew toward the heart of the desert. Soon, a stretch of hills or jungle appeared in my line of sight. It was the familiar Yadan Landform Group. I knew we were almost there.
I turned to Cao Mingzhe and shouted, "How do we get down? It's time you told us."
Cao Mingzhe had kept us in the dark about how to enter underground, as if it were a big secret.
He pointed to a spot below and shouted back, "That place. They blew a hole there. We'll go down from there. You should have guessed what lies beneath by now."
"Damn," I couldn't help but curse.
I prided myself on knowing the terrain of Lop Nur like the back of my hand; as long as I had that Yadan Landform Group as a reference, I wouldn't get the general location wrong. Of course, I knew what that spot corresponded to underground: it was that massive underground lake.
No wonder they had us take the Landing Craft over; it seemed they had planned this all along. But dealing with the Giant Octopus Monster in that underground lake wouldn't be easy.
The Landing Craft was big enough for us, but for that Giant Octopus Monster, one Tentacle could probably flip us over. What kind of rotten idea did Cao Mingzhe come up with? Why not open a hole somewhere else?
I scratched my head and suddenly realized something.
"Old Cao, are you saying we just sit in this Landing Craft and parachute down?"
I felt like I was almost capable of twisting my neck one hundred eighty degrees like Jack, even though I was actually twisting my waist, my face nearly pressed against Cao Mingzhe's nose.
"What’s wrong, scared?" Cao Mingzhe pushed my face back.
I thought my face must have turned green as I turned around to look for something to secure myself. Damn it, there were no seatbelts. There were a few handles on the side of the boat, so I grabbed one and shouted at the top of my lungs, "Everyone hold on tight! Old Cao has led us into a trap!"
No sooner had I spoken than sand hit my face like knives. Our helicopter had already begun its descent.
