It was strange, like some kind of resonance that reached deep into my brain, making me uncomfortable and creating a sense of agitation.
"What is that sound?"
Clearly, I wasn't the only one disturbed by the noise. A warrior at the rear of the ship shouted alertly.
In this nearly enclosed environment, I couldn't tell which direction the sound was coming from; it felt as if it surrounded me from all sides. The moment the sound appeared, it seemed to fill the entire space.
Not everyone was unable to identify the source of the noise. While most were still confused and terrified, A San suddenly shouted at me, "Brother Qiang, the sound is coming from below."
"Damn it, it's some kind of giant bugs; they're flying up! They're swarming like locusts!" This came from a Hakka person.
I knew that among the Hakka people, there was one with an awakened ability related to sight, somewhat like a Radar Man; it seemed to be this person.
"Locusts? Are there locusts in this place? But locusts aren't that scary; why are you shouting?" Liu Squad Leader took the opportunity to vent a bit.
"They're the size and swarm like locusts, but they're not locusts; they look more like Giant Mosquitoes," the Hakka person explained with a frown.
"Damn," Liu Squad Leader gestured with his thumb and index finger. "Mosquitoes that big? Do they suck blood or eat flesh?"
"Who cares if they eat flesh or drink blood? If you don't want to die, get ready with the Flame Thrower!" I shouted at Liu Squad Leader. Of course, I was also shouting for Fatty on the other end of the Walkie-Talkie.
Actually, we hadn't brought down too many Flame Throwers this time. It wasn't that we weren't prepared; we had stocked up on them to deal with the bugs in the Underground Passage. But this time, the Advance Team's mission was to confront the Giant Octopus Monster in the underground lake, and our main weapon was the Six-Barrel Gatling Gun mounted at the bow of the Landing Craft. I only saw two sets of Flame Throwers hanging on the low cabin walls of the Landing Craft.
Liu Squad Leader had experience fighting bugs in the Underground Passage. He knew that these bugs were afraid of fire. If those strange sounds were made by flying insects, then Flame Throwers would be our sharpest weapon against them.
Liu Squad Leader tossed me the Walkie-Talkie and grabbed a set of Flame Throwers to sling over his shoulder as he squeezed forward, patting A San, who was sitting next to me. "You go to the back."
A San ignored him. On this Landing Craft, only Cao Mingzhe and Jack could intimidate A San. He wouldn't even be afraid of me now, let alone Liu Squad Leader.
With no other choice, Liu Squad Leader had to push A-Yong, a Hakka man sitting next to Cao Mingzhe, to the back instead.
However, he found an excuse for himself: "I need to stay in contact with Ground; I can't leave the Walkie-Talkie."
After saying this, he remembered that he should report the current situation to Ground Command Center.
He snatched the microphone of the Walkie-Talkie from my hand and shouted into it, "Commander, we have deviated from the entrance! Below us is not an underground lake; it's very deep. We are under attack by unidentified flying insects and need a large number of Flame Throwers. Requesting support!"
I was so angry that I slapped him on the head. Our Walkie-Talkie and Ground Command Center were on the same frequency, meaning all our conversations could be heard by the Ground Command Center, provided communication with the Ground was still intact.
From the earlier conversation between the two Landing Crafts, it seemed that we had lost contact with the Ground Command Center; at least we couldn't hear any communications from them. His loud request for support from the Ground was completely unnecessary.
"Stop with the nonsense! We've lost contact with the Ground!" I shot back at Liu Squad Leader, who was baring his teeth at me in defiance. "Light up everything you can! We don't have enough Flame Throwers; don't let anything get close to us!"
Liu Squad Leader spat. He yelled at the two soldiers in front of him, "Get ready with the flares! Stop holding onto your machine guns! What are you planning to do, shoot mosquitoes with a machine gun? Use flares to blast them!"
It seemed to be a habit; the Hakka People had brought their most primitive lighting tools: torches.
When I saw them pull out torches from their backpacks, I nearly cried. These were lifesavers.
Although the Hakka People's torches were not long, it was clear that they had prepared them carefully. They had shortened the handles for convenience in packing, but the heads of the torches were as large as those I had seen in the Hakka People's Underground Cavern. These torches could burn for over six hours and produced a high temperature flame. They should hold us over for a while.
It seemed that the Hakka People were certain that danger was coming from below in the form of insects, and it was imminent. They generously shared their torches with everyone and helped light them. In moments, our Landing Craft was brightly lit. I imagined that from Fatty's perspective, our Landing Craft looked like a blazing fireball.
Noise and chaos reigned supreme at that moment. The Hakka People, along with Jack, A San, and even Xiao Ting, who had experience entering underground areas, felt nervous and scared but knew what needed to be done. Several soldiers were completely at a loss, wavering between their guns and flares; they trusted their firearms more.
Liu Squad Leader kept shouting loudly, firmly insisting that soldiers put down their weapons; it was utter chaos.
I was equally frantic, cursing under my breath and wishing I could knock out those two strongmen with a rifle butt.
If those flying creatures really were insects, using submachine guns wouldn't have much effect. The key issue was that chaos could lead to friendly fire. Just thinking about it made me anxious; if one insect broke through our defenses and flew in, a burst of bullets would likely hit everyone on board.
"Everyone damn well unload your bullets!" Liu Squad Leader clearly recognized this problem as well and shouted hoarsely.
But then another sudden sound made everyone on board fall silent.
"Ah!" It was a short yet piercing scream.
The voice did not come from beside us but from another Landing Craft; it came through the receiver of my Walkie-Talkie.
Our Walkie-Talkie operates on dual channels, just like a phone, so there's no need to press the talk button to speak. As long as the communication is open, the sound signals from both sides can be transmitted continuously.
" Fatty! What's going on? What’s happening over there?" I shouted into the microphone.
No one answered me, but sounds came through. It was an extreme cacophony of chaos. Cries, curses, and screams echoed like voices from hell.
Suddenly, a burst of gunfire erupted from the speaker. Immediately after, all sounds ceased abruptly.
"Everyone damn it, drop your guns! Whoever is holding a weapon, I'll take them down!" Liu Squad Leader shouted once more.
" Fatty!" I yelled desperately into the walkie-talkie.
But all I heard in return was the lost signal's beeping sound. (To Be Continued...)
