My heart instantly sank to the depths.
Although I couldn't know what was happening over there, the gunfire had sounded, and it would undoubtedly lead to the worst and most terrifying consequences.
I turned to look at the back of the Landing Craft.
In the last row sat two people: one was Jack, and the other was a Hakka person with visual abilities.
Jack and I exchanged a glance that quickly broke apart. In that fleeting moment, we conveyed the same message: it was Fatty. The one who fired was Fatty.
I thought that Jack and I were more familiar with the sound of the M16 rifle firing than Liu Squad Leader and his team. The instant the gunshot rang out, I recognized it as an M16.
The soldiers on both Landing Crafts were carrying standard-issue weapons of the People's Liberation Army: the Type 95 automatic rifle. The firing rate and sound of these two rifles were quite different. The one who fired could only be Fatty.
Of course, I didn’t believe that Fatty would shoot at the people on the Landing Craft, but I also couldn’t believe he would panic and use his gun against the bugs; that wasn’t Fatty ’s character!
My gaze quickly shifted to the Hakka Radar Man's face as I shouted, "What’s going on? What happened over there?"
The Hakka Radar Man was focused, his expression meticulous, like a student reciting a lesson.
He didn’t look at me; his eyes were fixed on some point in the air. "They are surrounded by bugs. Someone has been attacked by a bug and has already fallen to their death. Fatty shot a hole in the Drogue Chute; their Landing Craft is falling toward the ground."
Upon hearing this, my gaze swiftly turned to the other Landing Craft.
Sure enough, the other Landing Craft was no longer in its original position. Although the light over there remained dim like before, I could see where it was; however, it didn’t seem to be falling down but rather jumping—jumping downward.
The light from the Landing Craft flickered once, then disappeared, alternating back and forth. With each flicker, its position appeared lower and lower while gradually drifting away from us.
"Tell me how the bugs are attacking them!" I shouted at Hakka Radar Man.
Although I was anxious about Fatty and the others' safety, I had more urgent matters to attend to; I needed to save my own life first. Only then could I consider helping Fatty and the others. Otherwise, it would all be in vain.
"They're a swarm of vampires!" Hakka Radar Man pulled his gaze away from In Midair. "They pounced on one person all at once. That person let out a single scream, and their body was drained dry, turning into a desiccated corpse."
Hearing this made me shiver involuntarily. The way they died was terrifying.
"Who died?" Liu Squad Leader also turned to shout at Hakka Radar Man.
"How would I know? I don't recognize them."
"Damn, were they carrying a gun? You should know that."
"No, the dead one wasn't a soldier; it was a member of the Scientist Group."
I saw Liu Squad Leader let out a slight sigh, as if the deceased was a Scientist Team Member. It seemed to add some pressure on him.
This was in stark contrast to their attitude last time; back then, the military valued the Archaeology team members and Materials Scientists even more. They had even sent a rescue team into the Black Sandstorm for Song Guilong.
Buzz.
It was as if I had poked a hornet's nest; that strange sound suddenly amplified and became more distinct.
At the same time the sound grew louder, countless flickering shadows appeared in the air. Under the light and flames, I saw the Landing Craft surrounded by swarms of rapidly flying bugs, like mayflies during mating season, filling the fields.
The lights and flames on the Landing Craft had a deadly allure for the insects in the darkness, drawing them in the moment they appeared.
"Puff."
The signal flare and the Flame Thrower ignited simultaneously, spewing flames and Phosphorus Fire like a fire dragon.
As I had anticipated, the bugs here had no resistance to fire. In fact, they seemed to fuel it. The bodies of the insects burned easily; as soon as they were touched by the flames, they transformed into fireballs that exploded with a 'pop,' igniting even more of their kind.
The Landing Craft was small, and we formed a dual line of firepower with the Flame Thrower, signal flares, and torches. The self-ignition and ignition of the insects helped us eliminate a batch, keeping them at bay from the Landing Craft for a while and giving me confidence in our survival.
The main firepower came from the Flame Thrower and signal flares, which had a long range. The flames and Phosphorus Fire spread widely, effectively blocking the swarm of insects five meters away from the Landing Craft. A few of us Hakka People, including Jack and Cao Mingzhe, wielded torches to extinguish the few insects that broke through our first line of defense.
From appearances, we were indeed besieged by a swarm of Giant Mosquitoes, but they were not the Asian Tiger Mosquitoes we were familiar with. Their bodies were gray—very light gray and somewhat transparent.
Of course, they were not Asian Tiger Mosquitoes; I couldn't even be sure they were mosquitoes at all. They resembled mosquitoes in shape but were far too large—each one was as big as my thumb. With such a horde of bloodsuckers swarming over us, it was a miracle we weren’t reduced to corpses.
Our Landing Craft must have looked like a massive fireball, with the burning insects forming its outer flames.
"Watch it! Don't set the Drogue Chute on fire!" I shouted loudly as I saw one soldier's Flame Thrower shooting out a dragon of fire.
"It won't catch fire; it's made from flame-resistant materials, including parachute cord," the soldier coldly replied.
I glanced anxiously at the Drogue Chute above us. Hopefully, it wouldn't ignite; if it did, we would truly be doomed.
Suddenly, my attention was drawn to a strange and spectacular sight.
Above us, several massive gray-black objects intertwined, forming a column of wind resembling a tornado. One end of this wind column was rapidly approaching the opening through which we had entered.
My heart tightened instantly. Without thinking, I stood up and grabbed the Six-Barrel Gatling Gun in front of me. I aimed the Muzzle and its synchronized spotlight at the tornado-like object.
The high beam of the Muzzle was bright, piercing through the fireball and illuminating the distant tornado column. It was a twisted mass formed by several Giant Mosquitoes, extending from the endless darkness below, targeting the very entrance we had come through.
Compared to the Swarm of Mosquitoes surrounding our Landing Craft, this tornado-like Swarm of Mosquitoes was so conspicuous that if it spread out, it would cover the ground entirely.
The sight of this tornado column made my heart race. As I shone my spotlight on it, I heard many people around me gasp in shock. If this group of Giant Mosquitoes set their sights on us, our firepower would be utterly insufficient to stop them.
However, I had to lure them over. I understood why Fatty and his crew's Landing Craft above us were attacked first; they were directly in the path of the Mosquitoes' tornado.
The target of the Mosquitoes' tornado was not us; it was that entrance. The light was far more enticing to them! (To Be Continued...)
