Although the incendiary bomb was not as bright as the Flare, the explosion of the incendiary bomb could not be understood in the same way. The splattering Phosphorus Fire was not only more lethal but also brighter.
I threw the incendiary bomb in the direction of what seemed to be an opening. In that moment of intense brightness, I could see clearly that there was indeed a hole there. Moreover, the space we were in was not as large as I had imagined; I could see part of the edge, which was a towering rock wall.
The Phosphorus Fire from the incendiary bomb fell like scattered flowers, instantly turning the swarm of Mosquitoes in that area into fireflies. When the Phosphorus Fire hit the Ground, it transformed the Ground into a Fire Sea.
Jack had a good grasp of timing; he must have understood my intentions clearly. The Phosphorus Fire spread between us and the distant opening, neither falling on us nor sealing off the entrance. We just needed to rush through an area dense with Mosquitoes to reach the Fire Sea.
There, as long as we didn’t step into the Phosphorus Fire, we would be safe and could dash toward the distant opening.
However, since the Phosphorus Fire was scattered too finely, it wouldn’t burn for long. We had to get through as quickly as possible; if we slowed down, we wouldn’t make it to the distant opening. Similarly, I couldn’t detonate another incendiary bomb; doing so would eliminate our chance to run through. Anyone who stepped onto the Phosphorus Fire would ignite themselves.
Watching the Phosphorus Fire spread across the Ground, I shouted, “On the count of three, let’s run toward the opening together! Don’t step on the fire; it can’t be extinguished! Whoever steps on it is done for!”
I then quickly twisted open a signal flare. The flames of the flare shot out about ten meters, scattering Phosphorus Fire and clearing a path.
“Signal flare clears the way; everyone follow! Three!”
Seeing that most of the Phosphorus Fire from the incendiary bomb had already spread out, I shouted “three” and charged toward the Fire Sea.
“Damn, you’re just shouting three now?”
By the time that voice reached my ears, it was already fading. It must have been someone left behind by me and those around me.
The voice belonged to Liu Squad Leader; despite his limp leg, he was still struggling to keep up with us.
I ignored him; given our current situation, I couldn’t afford to worry about anyone else. If it were someone else, I might lend a hand, but for this traitor, his fate was his own concern.
The distance to cross into the Fire Sea wasn’t far. The three signal flares quickly created a path littered with insect corpses. As soon as I stepped into the Fire Sea, I felt the benefits of my waterproof and heat-insulating coat. My face was burning from the heat of the flames, but my body didn’t feel scorched.
The wreckage of a Landing Craft wasn’t directly in our path but slightly off to one side as we passed by it. Although I couldn’t see clearly, I still stopped for a moment to take a closer look as I went by. I didn’t see Cao Mingzhe or Hakka Radar Man’s bodies.
Despite being shattered, the massive wreckage of the Landing Craft still obscured my view significantly; I couldn’t see what was happening on the other side of it on the Ground. The broken canopy of a Drogue Chute also blocked part of the Ground; I had no idea if Cao Mingzhe and Hakka Radar Man’s bodies were beneath it.
However, I didn’t have more time to observe closely; the Fire Sea dissipated faster than I expected, and I felt the temperature of the Phosphorus Fire on my face decreasing.
“Brother Qiang, I knew you wouldn’t abandon me.”
Unexpectedly, Liu Squad Leader charged in, the last one to arrive, but completely unharmed. Of course, that broken leg didn’t count.
Liu Squad Leader cried as he lunged at me, and I was crying too.
“Brother Qiang, run!” he shouted, clinging to my neck and sobbing.
With tears streaming down my face, I ran forward. Not far ahead, I spotted a figure carrying someone on their back. It was Jack, carrying European.
I could harden my heart and run ahead alone, even knowing that Liu Squad Leader might die because of it. But I couldn’t bear to watch a living person die right in front of me, even if I had once cursed him to death.
I could see that outside the Fire Sea, a massive swarm of Mosquitoes was gathering. The Swarm of Mosquitoes in midair had already descended, merging with the Mosquitoes on the ground, fluttering around the flames. Giant Mosquitoes ignited and roasted by Phosphorus Fire fell from the sky; these creatures were highly flammable. They would ignite themselves before even landing in the flames.
The Mosquitoes formed a semi-circular dome or passage around the perimeter of the Phosphorus Fire, constantly trying to close in on us. The dome was getting lower and lower. I saw Jack bend down involuntarily as he ran, and I did the same. It felt like my head was about to collide with the Mosquitoes above.
“Brother Qiang, pass me the flare; the bugs are hitting my head.”
I realized he was right; with Liu Squad Leader clinging to my back, I felt like the Mosquitoes were right above me—his situation must be even worse.
I handed him the flare and added, “Old rules: if it gets too bad, jump off yourself. Don’t drag me down with you.”
“Brother Qiang, I can hold on.”
I cursed under my breath. Of course you can hold on; the problem is whether I can last until the end.
The distance was short; what we needed was explosive power, which was my weak point. I watched as Jack got farther away from me while the Mosquitoes drew closer.
The moment I saw Jack dash into the cave, despair washed over me.
The incendiary device exploded, scattering burning debris over a wide area, but its center was between the cave entrance and the wreckage of the Landing Craft—exactly where I was now.
At both ends, whether in terms of density or temperature, it was far less intense than at the center. As Jack rushed into the cave, I saw that Mosquitoes were already able to follow him inside.
Even though those who had entered were using various means to eliminate the Giant Mosquitoes surrounding the entrance, the undeniable reality was that the entrance had already been sealed off. There was no need for me to run over; it had become a dead end.
“Brother Qiang, I’m sorry; just leave me behind,” Liu Squad Leader said with a trembling voice.
“Damn it! Why didn’t you say this earlier? Does this even help now? If I leave you behind, can I make it?” I shouted back at him, spitting saliva all over his face.
I estimated the distance to the cave entrance; it was close enough. Even if my explosive power was a bit weak, I could still muster a sprint to dash into the opening.
Although we were at the center of the Phosphorus Fire explosion, the temperature and height of the flames had significantly reduced their lethality against the Mosquitoes. They could swoop down at any moment.
I pulled a burning bomb from the backpack strapped to my chest and shouted to Liu Squad Leader, "Get ready to shoot! If you don't blow up this burning bomb with one shot, we're completely done for!"
"Wait, I still have my rifle on my back."
I felt the strap of the Type 95 automatic rifle tugging against me.
With a 'click,' I heard the sound of a bullet being chambered.
"Alright, throw it."
