"I am Cui Zhiqiang," the warrior said as he finished adjusting A-Yong's splint, clapping his hands and standing up.
In fact, when I called him a warrior, I wasn't addressing him specifically; it was a general term. We were all warriors now. However, this was a harmless misunderstanding.
I held out my torch to ignite his, teasing, "Zhang Jianqiang. I wonder which one is stronger."
Cui Zhiqiang looked at me and said, "You are different from them."
Hearing this made a wave of sorrow rise within me. It seemed my name had not only appeared on the desks of high-ranking military officials but had also spread widely among the troops at the grassroots level, becoming somewhat demonized.
I sighed, "Cui..."
A loud explosion interrupted my words.
The energy from the incendiary bomb exploded, compressed and directed within the narrow Metal Passage. Even though I had intended to throw the incendiary bomb far into the swarm of Giant Mosquitoes, the shockwave and heat generated by the explosion surged toward me uncontrollably.
Of course, there were also Giant Mosquitoes swept along by the heatwave and shockwave.
No one turned around—not because they didn't want to, but because they dared not. They didn't even dare to blink as the heatwave hit their faces, scorching their eyes.
Among the Giant Mosquitoes that emerged from the explosion, not all were killed. A small percentage that were not at the center of the blast survived; the fastest among them dodged this disaster and charged toward us.
However, their base number was too large. Although only a small proportion of the surviving Giant Mosquitoes rushed toward us, their sheer numbers were still astonishing.
Moreover, behind them was an even more intense heatwave that would claim their lives in mere moments, forcing them to rush toward us at an even faster speed.
"Don't let a single one get away!" I shouted to keep myself and the other three from retreating.
We couldn't afford to let even a single bug escape, not just for our own sake, but also for the heavily injured and light casualties fleeing ahead of us.
We were trying to avoid being attacked from both sides. Even if a Giant Mosquito flew behind us, it might not attack immediately, but it would distract us. The sensation of being bitten by such a creature would surely be unpleasant, and if it were venomous, it could weaken or incapacitate its victim.
Of course, I didn't think a Giant Mosquito could be fatal.
We didn't let a single Giant Mosquito slip past us, but we were inevitably fighting while retreating.
There were too many; it was impossible for our torches to eliminate them all in such a short time. Fortunately, they weren't very fast. In the high heat and explosive flames, they were either severely injured or killed, significantly reducing their attack power and aggression. Even as we backed away, none of them managed to catch up or bite us.
After the most intense series of 'crackling' sounds ended, we began our counterattack, using our torches to ignite the remaining Giant Mosquitoes one by one.
The fire from the incendiary devices completely blocked the Swarm of Mosquitoes on the other side of the Metal Passage. Only when observing up close could one truly appreciate how terrifying this scene was.
I couldn't see beyond the flames; the temperature from the recently exploded incendiary device was extremely high. The flames were fierce, and I couldn't get too close to observe. However, I could hear the 'crackling' sounds of the Mosquitoes bursting into flames.
On the other side of the fire, countless Mosquitoes continued to recklessly fly into the Fire Sea. Perhaps they weren't willing, but there were simply too many of them; they couldn't stop. The ones behind pushed those in front into the Fire Sea.
I stood in a position that could withstand the heat, cruelly experiencing the thrill of watching the Mosquitoes being incinerated.
After a moment, I turned to A San: "You all go ahead and regroup with Liu Squad Leader. I... want to stay back and watch."
I wanted to know how long an incendiary device would continue burning. I had to wait until this one burned out completely; however, I needed to calculate how long the remaining incendiary devices would last for us.
I also wanted to observe the White Phosphorus Residue left by the incendiary device and see what impact it would have on this Metal Passage—whether it could melt through it. Even a slight sign of melting would give us new hope.
My goal is that door. If the metal of the Metal Passage can be melted by White Phosphorus Residue, then we can attempt to burn a hole through that door. If we manage to create a hole just big enough for one person to pass through, we would be able to seal it off. That way, at least we would have a temporary place to shelter.
I didn't hear any footsteps, so I turned around. All three of them were still there.
A San looked at me and said, "Brother Qiang, I'll stay here with you."
Warrior Cui Zhiqiang pulled a piece of compressed food from his backpack and gestured towards me. "We might as well eat something while we can; catching up to Lieutenant Liu won't help them."
I didn't insist further and shrugged, turning back around. It seemed they knew that the Giant Mosquito's flying speed couldn't catch up with them; otherwise, they wouldn't be so relaxed.
The fire ignited by the White Phosphorus Residue showed no signs of weakening in the short term. Standing too close was becoming unbearable for me.
I took two steps back, retreating to one side of the passage and touched the wall. It was cool, the same temperature as the walls in other parts of the passage and the same temperature as where I had discovered the door.
I smiled wryly and shook my head; it seemed my little hope was already dashed.
Logically speaking, White Phosphorus Residue has strong penetrative properties; its low ignition point doesn't mean it burns at a low temperature.
At its ignition point, I saw no signs of melting on the Metal Passage, and not far from the flames, the wall of the passage barely warmed up. Yet my skin was already feeling like it was about to burst from the heat.
The thermal conductivity of the entire Metal Passage extinguished my fantasies.
A-Yong and Cui Zhiqiang had a precise estimate of how long the incendiary would burn. While I silently nibbled on a piece of compressed food, they were already organizing their backpacks.
Seeing my puzzled glance, Cui Zhiqiang shrugged. "The fire is about to go out."
A San and I quickly stood up and shouldered our backpacks.
Without the accelerants of the White Phosphorus Incendiary Grenade, the flames were fierce but short-lived, extinguishing abruptly. Almost all the burning points diminished simultaneously, fading at a visible speed.
I saw a Giant Mosquito swaying as it flew through the Fire Sea towards us. Just as I was about to raise my torch to eliminate it, I suddenly noticed that behind it surged a long, straight black dragon made up of Mosquitoes.
At the same time, the hissing sound from the burning White Phosphorus Residue vanished instantly. All I could hear was the sudden buzzing and the sound of numerous footsteps.
Turning around, I saw that the three people who had been standing next to me had already run nearly a hundred meters away.
I spat and turned to follow the light ahead.
The Giant Mosquito flew at a speed comparable to my moderate running pace. Moreover, their numbers were overwhelming, creating almost a barrier against the moving air. As I ran in front of them, I could even feel the wind they generated pushing against my back.
Another side effect of the deteriorating airflow was that the pungent smell in the Metal Passage suddenly intensified.
