At a certain moment, a standing monster appeared within the beam of the flashlight. It was not far from me and A San; the creature's sudden emergence felt as if it had materialized out of thin air.
Of course, it could also be that our vision was blurred by tears. In any case, when the monster appeared, it was already within range for me to accurately hit it with the flashlight I threw.
A San and I reacted quickly. The instant the monster showed itself, both of our automatic rifles fired simultaneously, the flames from the muzzles piercing through the creature in an instant.
We weren't worried about friendly fire. Even though my vision was unclear and there was another humanoid figure in front of us, neither Xiao Ting nor Tang Yumo could possibly appear naked in the corridor. Moreover, it was evident that our target was a non-human entity.
Yes, this was a nearly naked humanoid creature. It seemed devoid of hair, its skin a reddish-brown hue, and it had no facial features. If there were any defining characteristics, they would be its ugliness and terror.
My first reaction was that if we managed to survive this corridor, we would encounter Fatty. After all, he had just faced off against the Upright Monsters.
My right index finger uncontrollably squeezed the trigger of my rifle until all the bullets were expended. The firing pin clicked against the empty chamber with a 'clank,' yet my finger remained on the trigger. The Upright Monster before me was terrifying—not only had it appeared so suddenly, but its very image was horrifying.
However, where the bullets had penetrated, I saw no corpse where one should have been. It seemed as if our bullets had pierced through air, or perhaps A San and I were both experiencing hallucinations at the same time.
“Damn it!” I shouted, nervously turning my head to look around.
Fatty's message informed me that the Upright Monsters moved swiftly; they had barely managed to fend off their attacks with a Six-Barrel Gatling Gun.
But Fatty's group was in a more open environment where the Upright Monsters had space to dodge and hide. Here, we were confined to a straight corridor. Where could it hide? Was its speed faster than a bullet?
“Qiangzi, I'm here.” A suddenly emerging voice nearly made me faint with joy.
It was Xiao Ting's voice. I couldn't believe I was hearing her!
Under the light of the One-Eyed Beast Flashlight, a figure appeared where the Humanoid Monster had just been. It was Xiao Ting.
"Are you human or a ghost?!" A San shouted in terror while loading bullets into his automatic rifle.
I almost slapped him. At such a close distance, if he wasn't blind, he would clearly see it was Xiao Ting.
I hurriedly waved to Xiao Ting. "Xiao Ting, come over here. It's dangerous over there."
"You come here, quickly. We have a place to hide," Xiao Ting said, turning and disappearing into a narrow gap in the Metal Passage's Cave Wall.
I stood frozen in fear for a few seconds before suddenly running forward. I had just found Xiao Ting; I didn't want to lose contact with her again. If we were going to die, we might as well die together; otherwise, it would be too tormenting.
After running a few steps, suddenly, a hand reached out from the wall of the Metal Passage.
My legs nearly gave way. Damn it, that was terrifying. It was way more thrilling than a horror movie.
Then, a head and half a shoulder appeared in my line of sight; it was Tang Yumo.
"This way. Come in."
I shone the flashlight over there and discovered a very narrow opening that only allowed one person to enter. Tang Yumo stood sideways at the entrance, waving at me.
Without hesitation, I jumped inside.
It was dark inside, but it seemed quite spacious, illuminated only by a Glow Stick. I couldn't see the entire area. However, my One-Eyed Beast Flashlight remained on. I scanned around and got a rough idea of the space. But then I jumped up in shock.
This was a rectangular Metal Room. Most of it was constructed from metal, likely using the same materials as the Metal Passage, with only a small part that wasn't metallic and appeared milky white. However, the metallic parts were not entirely the same as those in the passage; the color of the metal in this room was distinctly reflective under the flashlight.
What made me jump was not the room itself but rather a shadow standing against one of its walls—a terrifying-looking Humanoid Monster.
I believe in Xiao Ting, and I am even more anxious about her safety. I didn't even have time to reload my weapon before following her into this room. But this time, my carelessness nearly cost me my life.
The movements of the Humanoid Monster were swift. I estimated there was no time to change magazines, so I drew my dagger from my waist and charged at it. I couldn't let it harm Xiao Ting or Tang Yumo.
Although I had no expectations for this Hakka Girl—not because I lacked feelings, but because I dared not indulge them—I feared getting too involved. This Hakka Girl felt too mysterious to me.
Yet, I still had to protect her. She wasn't a stranger; even if she were just an unfamiliar girl, in this situation, I would step up without hesitation. There was no room for negotiation.
"Zhang, it's me. I've finally caught up with you."
I had already rushed to the front of the Humanoid Monster, my dagger almost touching its chest, but that sudden voice knocked both me and my dagger down.
I collapsed at its feet, unsure whether it was joy or sorrow. The familiar voice combined with the strange, terrifying face left me momentarily unable to accept or believe what was happening.
"Old... Xiao?" I asked weakly and confused.
"Brother Qiang, I'm late..." A San's voice came from behind me. "Damn Liu Squad Leader didn’t give me any magazines."
I turned around and saw A San jumping into the Metal Room, still loading bullets into a magazine.
This situation was bound to be misunderstood.
I lay at the feet of a Humanoid Monster while Xiao Ting and Tang Yumo stood not far behind me, the Humanoid Monster glaring at them menacingly.
A San reacted quickly; upon seeing the scene, he immediately shoved a partially loaded magazine into his assault rifle. Without moving closer, he pulled back the bolt on the muzzle end.
My legs were still weak; I couldn't jump up. I raised my hand and managed to utter a single word: "No..."
Then I saw Tang Yumo next to A San kick him hard in the groin, followed by a swift side movement as she brought her Hakka knife down on the back of A San's neck. He collapsed onto the metal ground with a loud thud.
I was so furious that I shouted at Tang Yumo, "Why didn't you just kill him?! He has a grudge against you!"
That kick from Tang Yumo could have easily ended A San's life; anything more would be unnecessary. Although she used the back of her knife, it wouldn't kill him, but it would certainly hurt—most likely giving him a concussion.
It was definitely intentional, a chance to take revenge on A San. We had been at odds with the Hakka People, and she was clearly holding onto that grudge.
Tang Yumo's eyes turned red as she stared at me, tears welling up in them.
Even though we had reconciled with the Hakka People, in my heart, A San felt closer and more trustworthy than any of them. How could I possibly care about someone who might turn against me at any moment?
But I didn't have time to check on A San; I knew that blow wouldn't take his life. Of course, I also ignored Tang Yumo, who was glaring at me.
I stood up and moved a bit closer to the Humanoid Monster. "Old Xiao, is that you?"
