"Cao Mingzhe is dead," A San declared firmly. "Brother Qiang, think about it. With so many Giant Mosquitoes around, how could he have survived if he didn't run in here with us?"
I grimaced and looked at Xiao Guolin, spreading my hands in a gesture of helplessness. I had no words, but the meaning was clear: let’s mourn and move on.
Xiao Guolin glanced at me before his gaze shifted back to A San. "Did you see Xiao Guolin's body?"
A San shook his head in terror, as if afraid of Xiao Guolin's stare.
"You..." I took over the conversation and asked A San, "Have you tried contacting Cao Mingzhe or Anzi?"
A San shook his head again. "You want me to focus on contacting Gang Ge; I can't manage to reach two people at once."
Xiao Guolin stood there expressionless for a moment, seemingly lost in thought.
"Who is Gang Ge?" Xiao Guolin suddenly asked.
" Fatty, Song Gang," I replied to Xiao Guolin.
In the story I told him, Fatty was another main character, almost on par with the protagonist 'me.' Xiao Guolin should know this.
Sure enough, Xiao Guolin nodded.
"He has another identity," I forced a grim smile at Xiao Guolin. "Your... future son-in-law."
"Is this person reliable?"
"Of course," I answered without hesitation. "Even though I'm angry that he stole my girlfriend, he's definitely someone you can count on. Your daughter has good taste."
I had come to terms with this matter; there was no jealousy left. The loss was undeniable and indisputable, so there was no sense of competition anymore. Moreover, the one who won was my best buddy, and I genuinely wished him well from the bottom of my heart.
There was clearly someone who thought differently. I couldn't tell if it was Fatty's name that triggered her or Xiao Ting, but I noticed Tang Yumo's expression suddenly change. It became even colder than before, despite the fact that this Hakka Girl had always been icy.
I figured Xiao Guolin hadn't noticed the change in Tang Yumo's demeanor. He nodded at me.
He must have trusted me; I was a reliable person, and that meant he could accept my presence. Of course, there were some matters regarding his daughter that he couldn't control, especially since he intended to betroth her to me. But Xiao Ting liked Fatty, and as her father, he could only acquiesce.
"Is Song Gang in another group?"
"Yes," I nodded. "They fell at a different location. Their situation isn't any better than ours; they've been attacked by many Upright Monsters."
"Is he... okay?"
"This place doesn't need my input; I'll go help over there. At least two people still need surgery." Tang Yumo showed no interest in discussing anything related to Fatty.
I glanced at Xiao Guolin, and seeing no reaction from him, I nodded at Tang Yumo. "Alright, you take care of your business first."
"Everything is fine for now." I quickly turned back to Xiao Guolin. "That group has lost several people, but your son-in-law is tough. I contacted him not long ago; he's still alive and kicking."
Xiao Guolin didn't show any signs of excitement. Uh... there was probably no expression at all, which was a relief. I had grown accustomed to his expressionless face; a hint of emotion would have been more frightening.
"It's about that thing of mine. It's... okay, right?"
My mood instantly shifted to tense and serious. Frankly, I was no longer sure if my actions were correct. I was referring to bringing the Antimatter Bomb down here.
What troubled me most was that there was no room for error in this matter. I didn't even know how many spare batteries Fatty had brought down; if the batteries ran out, the Antimatter Bomb would detonate instantly. There was absolutely no way to find a power source here.
In other words, regardless of what hidden truths might emerge—whether it was what Xiao Guolin and Cao Mingzhe were concealing from me or the unbelievable fact that Song Guilong was alive—none of it could change the reality that this place would be reduced to rubble.
So, there was no need for me to hide this from Xiao Guolin. Besides, his daughter already knew about it; they just hadn't had the time for a father-daughter talk.
"Yes. No problem," I affirmed. "That thing is in your son-in-law's hands. As long as we're alive, it means 'it' is safe."
"How could you hand it over to someone else?"
Hearing Xiao Guolin's words stirred a wave of jealousy within me. Why not just give it directly to your son-in-law? Why refer to him as 'someone else'? If I handed the box over to Liu Squad Leader, you wouldn't have any objections!
I sighed in frustration. "Old Xiao, that thing weighs over three hundred pounds. Even if you gave it to me, I couldn't carry it. Only your son-in-law has the strength to handle it."
For the first time, I saw Xiao Guolin let out a sigh of relief. He turned to A San. "Get ready; the rain outside has stopped, and we can leave."
"Leave? Where? Just the two of us?" A San was momentarily confused. His questions were not only progressive in number but also in tone, culminating in an exclamation of one word: "No!"
His voice was too loud, causing everyone surrounding Jack to turn their faces toward us. Jack directly threw his voice back at us with a loud shout. "Don't disturb my surgery!"
I shot A San a glare. "Don't disrupt the American Guy; he's operating. Your sudden outburst could lead to a disaster."
Upon hearing this, A San suddenly swayed and collapsed to the ground as if he had lost all strength. With a face full of despair, he said, "Uncle Xiao, Grandpa Xiao, I just had Hakka Girl kick me where it hurts; I can't accompany you. Choose someone else."
Xiao Guolin looked at him expressionlessly. "I never intended to use your legs anyway; you're too slow. As long as your ears work, that's enough."
"Brother Qiang, save me." Seeing that there was no room for negotiation with Xiao Guolin, A San clung to my leg and began wailing.
Having a grown man cling to my leg and cry was quite unsettling... I even shed a tear.
I had despised, scolded, and belittled A San before, but now I truly regarded him as one of my own. Under such immense pressure from Cao Mingzhe, he managed to keep my secret; that was no small feat for him.
I rubbed my eyes and looked at Xiao Guolin. "Can we go together? Aren't you looking for Song Gang? I want to find him too."
"No way," Xiao Guolin replied firmly. "Unless you all want to die."
Hearing this made me shiver; it felt like he was dragging A San to his doom.
A San immediately rolled his eyes and fainted. He was the type who feared death the most, someone who would not even muster the courage to resist when faced with someone stronger than him.
"You all prepare to evacuate. I'll draw you a map; it should help you get out... hopefully."
Xiao Guolin's repetition made it clear that he wasn't very confident either. There was no way I could agree to that.
"Old Xiao," I said earnestly, "think not just of me, but also of your daughter. Song Gang is her man, and their relationship is already deep. Your daughter won't agree to give up on Song Gang."
Xiao Guolin looked at me in silence.
