Jack rushed over with a grim expression, throwing himself to the ground and pulling two grenades from my backpack.
I quickly stopped him. "It's useless. You’ve seen his speed; he might not dodge the shrapnel from the grenade, but he can easily avoid the explosion itself. There's no way you can make a grenade go off near him unless you fill this space with them."
Jack gripped the grenades tightly and looked up at me. His hair was completely soaked in blood, as if he had been submerged in it. Blood smeared his face and beard, distorting his features, and his eyes were bloodshot.
"Even if we die together, he has to die!"
Hearing Jack's gritted teeth declaration sent a shiver down my spine. It seemed that whatever had just happened had deeply shaken him; something truly horrifying must have occurred to make him lose his composure.
"Let me handle this, trust me." I quickly drew my pistol and said to A San, "Get me some bullets."
With that, I reached for a rope at my waist and pulled up my One-Eyed Beast Flashlight. I tapped it twice with the pistol, and a beam of white light burst forth.
I immediately reversed my grip on the One-Eyed Beast Flashlight, bending my left forearm at ninety degrees in front of my face while resting the wrist of my right hand on my left arm. The flashlight and muzzle moved in parallel as I searched for a target.
My target was Cao Mingzhe. The chaos of the moment had clouded my judgment. Cao Mingzhe's frenzied behavior, the sudden appearance of Xiao Guolin, and another man in black made the situation even more confusing.
I didn't have time to inquire or ponder the deeper meanings behind their words, but I could roughly deduce that these three knew each other and had conspired together for this event.
I wasn't an Awakener; I couldn't enter the black hole and disrupt their plans. Moreover, it seemed they were turning against each other. This gave us an opportunity.
Even though all three were enemies, helping the weaker opponent eliminate the stronger one was our path to survival. It was predictable that Cao Mingzhe and Xiao Guolin would struggle against the man in black. After that, it would be our turn. Cao Mingzhe had already targeted us; he wouldn't hold back anymore. If he lived, we would die—total annihilation was inevitable.
At that moment, my focus sharpened intensely; I could perceive Cao Mingzhe's lightning-fast movements in exquisite detail. I could even see him drawing his knife while running, as if I could slow down the scene before me frame by frame, like watching a slow-motion replay.
'Bang!'
My gun fired. I saw the bullet hit Cao Mingzhe's left shoulder, piercing through and spraying blood. His body jolted from the impact.
He was running sideways towards two men in black when he was struck. In that instant, he suddenly turned around. Under the blinding light of the One-Eyed Beast Flashlight, Cao Mingzhe's face twisted in rage as he shouted at me, "Die!"
The sound was definitely over one hundred twenty decibels, and I instantly went deaf.
With his roar, I felt a gust of wind rushing towards me. It wasn't just his voice; it was the force of his charging figure that created the wind.
Cao Mingzhe's silhouette appeared like an enlarged slide, almost instantly lunging in front of me. I could see the murderous intent in his eyes.
The moment I decided to shoot at him, I was mentally prepared. To be killed by him or to kill him. Killing him was the only way to give my teammates and friends a chance at survival. I certainly wouldn't hesitate.
Moreover, my Muzzle never stopped firing bullets.
To maintain shooting accuracy, I opted for single shots. The second bullet struck Cao Mingzhe's right neck as he charged directly at me, penetrating through. Blood sprayed from both ends of the wound.
This shot hit Cao Mingzhe's body like a hammer, causing his head and upper body to jerk back, abruptly halting his advance.
'Bang! Bang! Bang!'
Three consecutive shots forced Cao Mingzhe to stagger backward.
It was a strange sensation. At that moment, everything should have been as fast as lightning—Cao Mingzhe's speed and the speed of my bullets should have left no room for reaction.
But my eyes could see the bullet piercing into Cao Mingzhe's body, blood gushing from the wound. Then, I watched as the hole in his black coat shrank and smoothed out at a visible speed, returning to its original state. Only the wound on his neck continued to bleed profusely.
I immediately understood that the only place where I could seriously injure or even kill him was his head. I raised my Muzzle slightly and pulled the trigger aimed at his skull.
'Bang'
'Ting'
I could see the trajectory of the bullet, witnessing as Cao Mingzhe lifted his Black Longsword to block the bullet before it collided with the sword, sending sparks flying.
I had anticipated he possessed this ability, but I hadn't expected to be able to do this. I realized that it wasn't the speed of the bullet that had slowed down; rather, my reflexes had surpassed its speed. This gave me confidence in my ability to kill Cao Mingzhe.
'Bang' As my gun fired again, I saw a twisted expression of fear appear on Cao Mingzhe's face. The gunshot wound on his neck and my accurate judgment shook his confidence in killing me.
Cao Mingzhe did not use his Black Longsword to block this bullet; instead, he dodged to the side with lightning speed.
'Bang'
The moment I saw Cao Mingzhe's body move, I fired another bullet, hitting him in the left chest. Immediately after...
'Bang'
A bullet shot toward his head.
'Ting'
Cao Mingzhe deflected the bullet with his blade, then spun and moved in a wide arc twice, swiftly jumping over the black hole and disappearing from my flashlight's beam.
"Change the magazine!" I shouted to A San.
Driving Cao Mingzhe away might not be a good thing. As long as he was alive, he posed a threat to us. I needed to seize this moment to find him and kill him. I had no idea how long I could maintain this state.
"No!"
Suddenly, a piercing and brief scream echoed through the space.
Many of us turned our flashlights toward the source of the sound, revealing a horrifying scene.
Another man in black had caught up to Xiao Guolin. He wielded a Black Longsword in each hand; the left one had already plunged into Xiao Guolin's back, while the right one swung horizontally toward his neck.
Xiao Guolin turned his head in agony, his eyes wide with terror as he looked at the man behind him.
In that moment, it seemed that fear and pain had drained him of all strength. He could do nothing but scream in despair as he witnessed death approaching.
With a sharp crack, it sounded as if the sword had not severed flesh but rather snapped a chopstick.
As the crack resonated, Xiao Guolin's desperate scream abruptly ceased. His head flew off with a thud, and his body, now headless, stumbled forward a few steps before crashing heavily to the ground.
At that moment, I felt my heart turn cold. I did not mourn Xiao Guolin's death nor did I feel any relief. I knew that even harsher battles lay ahead, and perhaps I would be the next to fall.
I took the magazine that A San handed me while running towards the man in black. On the other side, across the black hole, was another person—Cao Mingzhe, whom I had severely injured.
“Dad!”
Suddenly, Xiao Ting's piercing scream echoed through the space.
The man in black, with his back to me, seemed startled and turned his head.
In the moment my Flashlight illuminated his face, my legs felt as heavy as lead, and my body toppled forward like a felled tree. My mind went blank. I could hear Cao Mingzhe shouting a phrase: How is this possible!
How is this possible! Is it him? (To Be Continued.)
