It was a pale and emaciated face. The lips were tightly pressed together, and two small eyes emitted a dazzling ferocity.
This face filled me with nothing but fear, a deep-seated fear that came from within.
The owner of this face had once stabbed me in the chest, and although he was immediately beheaded by Cao Mingzhe, the image of that face had already planted the seeds of terror in my heart. My fear of this face surpassed my hatred for it.
Yes, this was the face of Song Guilong. The one who had once been dead.
My hands weakly grasped at the ground; the flashlight and gun were nowhere to be found. I didn’t even have the strength to stand up. I felt as if I were staring at a grim reaper, whose malevolent gaze could kill me and strip away my will to resist.
“Don’t go over there!”
Jack’s shout pulled me back from the depths of fear and despair. I quickly jumped up from the ground, reaching for the flashlight along the rope, but the gun was not on the ground around me; I couldn’t find it, nor did I have time to search.
I turned to look to my right. Jack’s voice wasn’t coming from behind me; he had already run out, leaving the position where I had just crouched and fired. What I saw was something unbelievable and unforgettable.
I must clarify our positions at that moment. At this instant, all of us were on the left half of this space, based on the direction I was facing.
I was almost parallel to the black hole; directly in front of me was Song Guilong, while Xiao Guolin's corpse lay behind the black hole. Of course, for Jack and A San, Xiao Guolin was behind the black hole; for me, however, I could see Xiao Guolin's body.
Cao Mingzhe should have been in that position too, but he had been frightened off by a few of my bullets and was deliberately hiding from me; I couldn’t make out his figure.
At that moment when I turned my head, I saw Xiao Ting running madly toward the black hole. She witnessed Song Guilong strike down at Xiao Guolin and saw his head fly off, but she couldn’t see Xiao Guolin’s body lying behind the black hole.
However, the shock of Xiao Guolin's decapitation had already driven her to madness; at that moment, she had completely lost her mind. She ran toward the black hole like a lunatic.
And Jack was just two steps behind Xiao Ting, shouting as he chased after her.
I knew why Jack was acting this way; behind the black hole lay not only the corpse of Xiao Guolin but also the more sinister Cao Mingzhe. Anyone who dared to approach him would inevitably face a cold blade.
I had forgotten the most terrifying enemy before me and shouted at Jack, "Grab her!"
Jack moved swiftly, leaping just as Xiao Ting reached the edge of the black hole. His body was nearly parallel to the ground as he desperately reached for Xiao Ting with both hands.
However, they were too close to the black hole, and Jack's speed advantage did not fully manifest. Even if he soared like Van Persie, he still fell short by a hair's breadth, allowing Xiao Ting to jump into the black hole.
It was: Xiao Ting jumped into the black hole!
In that moment, as she leaped, she screamed, "Dad!"
That voice echoed through space, but on the other side of the black hole, it was not the owner of that voice who appeared; it was Jack.
Jack's outstretched hand failed to grasp Xiao Ting. Instead, it touched the black hole. The time difference between when he and Xiao Ting made contact with the black hole could be measured in fractions of a second. When Jack emerged on the other side, it was not in the usual sequence of hand, head, body, and feet. Instead, a figure in flight appeared; it seemed that no part of his body had touched the black hole. At the moment he appeared, his feet were already outside its range.
Jack fell to the ground beside Xiao Guolin's corpse. He lay there numbly on the ground, as if he had either died from the fall or lost his mind.
Not only was Jack silent, but everyone else fell quiet at that moment. My mind went blank as I stared in shock at the scene before me, like a computer that had crashed.
"Xiao Ting!" The entire world fell silent for a few seconds. I suddenly screamed and rushed toward the black hole.
I didn't know where Xiao Ting had gone or whether she was alive or dead. But I couldn't let her die in front of me; this was my promise to Fatty. If death was inevitable, then I would go with her. I would rather die than face Fatty's disappointed face!
With a deep breath...
In the moment I faced the black hole, I leaped forward. Upon landing, I collided with someone—it was Cao Mingzhe.
He seemed to be in a daze, unable to believe what was happening before him. After stumbling back two steps from my impact, he appeared still shaken by the fear of gunfire and suddenly turned to run toward the other side of the space.
“Hahaha…”
Suddenly, Cao Mingzhe's maniacal laughter reached my ears.
“The master’s plans are flawless. Number One, you should know what price you will pay for betraying the organization. Repent, sinner!”
I directed my flashlight toward the source of the voice and saw Cao Mingzhe's face twisted in a grotesque grin. The moment my flashlight illuminated him, he bent his knees and sprang into the air like a spring.
My flashlight couldn't keep up with his pace; by the time it pointed toward the sky, there was nothing there.
“I still couldn’t stop this.”
Hearing those words sent a chill down my spine as I turned to see Song Guilong standing not far from me. I felt every hair on my body stand on end; fear made me want to flee, but I knew there was no escaping his speed or his knife.
Then it would be a fight to the death. I had no way to confront Fatty; dying in battle could be a form of release.
Jack had already gotten up, holding a dagger at my side. He hadn’t run—did he think he couldn’t escape? Or did he believe he had a chance to fight back?
I glanced at Jack and exhaled. “I’ll hold him off; you guys run. Go to the designated location and find Fatty; he knows the way out.”
Jack grimaced. “Do you think I don’t want to run? None of us can outrun him. I don’t want a knife sticking through my back; there’s a term in Chinese for this kind of integrity, isn’t there? Besides, if you don’t go back, how can Fatty give us the map? Do you really think he won’t leave us here?”
I sighed, knowing that Jack's estimation was likely accurate. With Xiao Ting's fate unknown, if I were to die here, it would be a miracle if Fatty didn't personally take out a few of them.
Aside from A San, the rest of the group wouldn't lift a finger to help. Jack? No way; those two were sworn enemies. The Hakka People? They shared the same disdain for Fatty. Especially the two Hakka People still alive; I knew Fatty's attitude well—if he had the chance, he wouldn't hesitate to strike them down.
‘Thud thud thud’
I saw A San making a wide circle and running towards me from the other side. He avoided the black hole, clearly fearful of it after Xiao Ting's mysterious disappearance.
"Brother Qiang, let's fight him," A San said, standing beside me with a half-broken automatic rifle in hand.
Song Guilong was still approaching me, moving steadily but not quickly. I noticed two people following him—Tang Yumo and A-Yong—who also hadn't run away. Tang Yumo held a Hakka Straight Knife, closing in on Song Guilong.
A wave of inexplicable sadness washed over me; I felt that they were all here because of me, risking their lives due to my existence as a false Awakener.
I gritted my teeth. "Alright then, let's fight." (To Be Continued)
