Ilder returned once again to Duchess Manor.
He clenched his fists slightly, as if to muster courage, standing somewhat awkwardly before Jiang Ruoshui. A faint crimson hue appeared on his slightly darkened face, as if the color were seeping through his skin.
Taking a deep breath, he said, "Ruoshui, after all these years in Barbarian City, you should understand my feelings for you."
He paused, a flicker of tension crossing his eyes. "I care for you, Ruoshui. Will you marry me? I will treat you well."
Jiang Ruoshui, lost in thought, seemed to be pulled back from distant musings. She blinked and looked at Ilder with confusion in her eyes. "Everyone in Barbarian City knows about my relationship with Cangyuan. You wouldn't mind that, would you?"
Tilting her head slightly, her brows furrowed as she unconsciously fiddled with the bell on her wrist.
Mentioning Xu Cangyuan made Ilder feel a weight pressing down on his chest, like a heavy stone. After years of guarding Jiang Ruoshui's heart, he found himself overshadowed by an exiled prisoner!
His brows knitted together tightly, his gaze filled with unwillingness. "Xu Cangyuan is not your true belonging..."
"And neither are you." Jiang Ruoshui interrupted Ilder decisively with those four words.
She stopped fiddling with the bell and looked firmly at Ilder. "Though I have lived on the frontier for many years, I am still a daughter of the Han family at heart. I believe in loyalty; once I have chosen Xu Cangyuan, I will not let go."
Jiang Ruoshui raised her chin slightly, displaying her determination.
"Loyalty?" Ilder suddenly laughed, his laughter tinged with bitterness and mockery.
"Will Xu Cangyuan accept you? Setting aside the fact that you see him as a male companion, do you really think someone as ambitious as Xu Cangyuan would willingly spend his life at Duchess Manor? He is infatuated with power, and staying at Duchess Manor is merely a means of self-preservation; ultimately, he will leave."
As he spoke, he looked at Jiang Ruoshui, his eyes filled with a hint of expectation, hoping she would recognize reality.
Mentioning what weighed heavily on her mind, Jiang Ruoshui paused for a moment, a flicker of panic crossing her eyes, but she quickly regained her composure.
"It doesn't matter if he doesn't want to be with me. After all, I've been entangled with him for two years; what's a few more years?" Jiang Ruoshui's tone was calm, as if discussing something trivial, yet the subtle pain in her heart was undeniable.
She bit her lip slightly and thought to herself: Ilder is right; Xu Cangyuan won't stay with her forever… he won't…
"You have rejected my proposal today, but one day you will surely regret it!" With that, Ilder stormed off, his footsteps heavy, each step seeming to vent his inner fury and stirring up small clouds of dust.
Baique Tower was the largest tavern in Barbarian City.
Xu Cangyuan walked into the establishment with steady steps. His expression was cold as he ignored the cheerful inquiries from the waiter and headed straight for the second floor.
His gaze was deep, as if harboring endless thoughts, and he ascended to the room Ilder had reserved.
From the moment he arrived in Barbarian City and learned of Ilder's affection for Jiang Ruoshui, he had anticipated that Ilder would seek him out; he just never expected to wait two years for it.
During these two years, he watched Ilder's feelings for Jiang Ruoshui grow, and an indescribable sensation stirred within him.
Pushing open the door to the room, a strong smell of alcohol rushed out to greet him, sharp and overwhelming as if it could intoxicate anyone who entered.
"Commander," Xu Cangyuan called respectfully.
At the sound of his voice, Ilder reacted like an enraged beast, suddenly throwing down the wine jar in his hand. With a loud crash, the jar shattered on the ground.
He took a swift step forward and grabbed Xu Cangyuan by the collar, his eyes bloodshot. "Who do you think you are? Just a treacherous rebel! Don't think that just because Jiang Ruoshui treats you well, you have any power! She doesn't like you, you fallen prince; she—she..."
After a brief hesitation, Ilder suddenly shouted, "Jiang Ruoshui loves Batel! You're nothing but his substitute!"
