His hands were tense, veins bulging as he fixed his gaze on Xu Cangyuan.
"Batel?" Xu Cangyuan furrowed his brow, a hint of confusion flashing in his eyes.
"Batel is a warrior from Barbarian City. You bear some resemblance to him."
Ilder released his grip on Xu Cangyuan's collar and took a step back, his eyes filled with a mix of reluctance and resentment. "From the moment I first saw you, I understood Jiang Ruoshui's intentions. It's just that Batel died unexpectedly during a hunt. Although Jiang Ruoshui shows no outward signs of it, she is deeply saddened inside. If Batel hadn't died, how could you be living so freely now?"
Ilder's voice was hoarse, as if recounting a sorrowful tale.
"So she has someone in her heart."
A faint bitterness spread from within, but Xu Cangyuan maintained his composure, though his gaze dimmed slightly. "So what? Batel is dead, and I am here. Even if Batel were alive, you still wouldn't have Jiang Ruoshui. In any case, Jiang Ruoshui is not yours."
After saying this, he gently freed himself from Ilder's grasp and leisurely smoothed out the wrinkles in his clothing, moving with an elegance that suggested the earlier confrontation had not affected him at all.
"Jiang Ruoshui is not yours either! She doesn't love you!"
Ilder shouted, veins throbbing at his temples as if they might burst. "She doesn't love you at all!"
Xu Cangyuan did not respond; he simply turned silently and left the room, his silhouette appearing somewhat lonely.
He had never cared much for matters of love, and there were too many emotions hidden within Jiang Ruoshui that he was too indifferent to explore.
She did not love him, and that was fine; he did not love her either. They would not be companions on the same path. He thought this to himself, yet his steps felt heavy.
Days passed quietly, but a royal decree of marriage shattered the tranquility of Barbarian City, stirring up a tremendous uproar.
"The Emperor has betrothed Princess Ruoshui to Commander Ilder. What will happen to Xu Cangyuan?" a passerby remarked.
"What will happen? Of course, he’ll have to get out of Duchess Manor!" another replied, a smug expression on his face. "But if Xu Cangyuan is shameless enough, it’s not impossible for him to cling to the Princess."
"Really?" another person said doubtfully.
"Absolutely, absolutely!" others chimed in.
"How could Commander Ilder tolerate Xu Cangyuan? Duchess Manor is bound to be in chaos!" someone expressed with concern.
While discussions buzzed through the streets, Duchess Manor remained as quiet as ever.
Xu Cangyuan did not appear when the decree was read; instead, he found the piece of yellow silk in Jiang Ruoshui's room—the remnants of what she had torn into shreds.
He slowly crouched down, piecing the broken decree back together, his gaze focused as he examined the ink that had enraged Jiang Ruoshui.
Staring at the shattered jade seal on the silk, images of dismembering the Emperor flashed through Xu Cangyuan's mind.
An indescribable restlessness coursed through his veins, and flames of anger rampaged within him as his fists clenched unconsciously. He struggled to calm himself when suddenly, Ilder's voice rang out from outside the room.
"The Emperor has already decreed that we are to be married on a chosen day. Do you dare defy the imperial order?" Ilder, emboldened by the royal command, paid no heed to Jiang Ruoshui's resistance.
He stormed into the room and seized Jiang Ruoshui's wrist with great force, leaving a red mark immediately. As his other hand moved toward her chest, Xu Cangyuan happened to open the door.
Ilder paused for a moment before arrogantly shouting at Xu Cangyuan, "Xu Cangyuan, Jiang Ruoshui will eventually be mine! What right do you have to compete with me? Once I become the Duke, you’d better get out of Duchess Manor! Who do you think you are?" With that, he disregarded Jiang Ruoshui's struggles and forcefully kissed her lips.
Xu Cangyuan's eyes were dark and deep as ink, yet he remained motionless. His gaze was icy, like a bottomless lake.
On the other side, Ilder felt a flash of cold light before a searing pain spread from his chest throughout his body.
He released Jiang Ruoshui with a scream. Blood stained the Curved Blade in her hand, trickling down the blade and dripping onto the floor.
"Are you tired of living? How dare you touch me!" Xu Cangyuan had never heard such an icy tone from Jiang Ruoshui. Looking at her terrifying visage, reminiscent of a hellish demon, an unsettling fear coiled tightly within him.
"Do you think I, Jiang Ruoshui, am yours to claim? If you dare to marry me, I will ensure your entire family has no place to be buried!"
Jiang Ruoshui's gaze seemed ready to devour Ilder, filled with fury and determination.
