"It was you who had Ilder bring the Dragon Talisman to deceive me. You orchestrated all of this!"
A hatred unlike any he had ever felt filled Xu Cangyuan's chest, and he glared at Long Qiuxuan like an enraged lion, his eyes seemingly ready to spit fire. He wished nothing more than to tear him apart, his fists clenched tightly, veins bulging on the back of his hands.
Long Qiuxuan smiled with a hint of femininity, nodding slightly in acknowledgment.
"It was indeed me. Even the drug you put in her drink was swapped out for poison by my people. Xu Cangyuan, she kept you as a male concubine for two years; shouldn't you hate her to the core? What does it matter to you whether she is dead or alive?" His voice was cold, like a chilling wind from hell.
Xu Cangyuan could hardly express the regret that now consumed him. He held the unconscious Jiang Ruoshui in his arms, repeatedly whispering apologies as tears streamed down his face, falling onto hers. But she could no longer hear him; her complexion grew paler, and her body colder.
"If it weren't for you, getting rid of Jiang Ruoshui would not have been easy at all. Although generals only recognize the Military Token, most of those soldiers have followed General Jiang through life and death and are fiercely loyal to their mistress. This is why I discovered long ago that the Tiger Tally was in Jiang Ruoshui's hands but dared not take action."
As Long Qiuxuan spoke, he toyed with the Dragon Talisman in his hand, a glint of caution in his eyes.
"If it weren't for me, Ruoshui wouldn't even have thought about seizing power. Why did you have to poison her? She is your sister!" Xu Cangyuan shouted, his eyes filled with anger and sorrow.
"Sister?"
Long Qiuxuan scoffed at the notion as he swiftly snatched the Tiger Tally from Xu Cangyuan's grasp. "Do you think I would let you go? I never make foolish decisions like letting a tiger return to the mountain. If it weren't for this 'sister' personally coming from Barbarian City to threaten me, causing unrest throughout the Dragon Ridge Dynasty if I didn't spare your life, how could I have sentenced you to exile?"
"My original plan was to execute you on the way, but unexpectedly she saved you before I could. You say she has no intention of seizing power; as long as you can't let go of authority, she will always have that intention." A hint of disdain flickered in Long Qiuxuan's eyes.
Xu Cangyuan was not overly shocked; in that brief moment, he had learned too many truths and had been left nearly numb by the revelations.
The infatuated woman did everything for him.
She killed for him, committed the heinous crime of usurping the throne for him, abandoned her stable and prosperous life for him, and cast aside everything she had. In return, he offered her a cup of poison with his own hands.
Xu Cangyuan felt as if a great mountain pressed down on his heart, making it hard for him to breathe.
"Xu Cangyuan, at first I didn't intend to wipe you out completely. I wanted to peacefully retrieve the Tiger Tally by having Ilder marry Jiang Ruoshui. It was you who ruined everything. If we must find a culprit for Jiang Ruoshui's death, that culprit is you," Long Qiuxuan said coldly.
Xu Cangyuan forced a bitter smile, one that looked worse than tears. What was the point of discussing these matters now?
The person in his arms was gradually growing cold; he and she were separated by the heavens and earth. He felt as if his heart had died along with Jiang Ruoshui's departure, and the world turned gray.
Thus ended a Struggle for the Throne, like a bloody farce, leaving only endless sorrow behind.
Ten days later, Xu Cangyuan faced execution at noon gate.
Before the execution, he gazed at the azure sky, which was so bright it hurt his eyes; his gaze felt hollow.
Recalling the past in Barbarian City, all those moments spent with Jiang Ruoshui suddenly made the brilliant sunlight feel blinding, easily scorching his eyes.
No longer would there be a woman who smiled at him like a flower, calling his name over and over again; that voice seemed to still echo in his ears. No longer would there be a woman who sacrificed so much for him just to fulfill his wishes, even if those wishes defied morality. No longer would there be a woman who stirred such complex feelings within him; now only endless regret remained.
There would never be another woman named Jiang Ruoshui.
In a daze, Xu Cangyuan seemed to see Jiang Ruoshui's smiling face, a smile as radiant as the most vibrant flowers in spring. In an instant, he was struck by a wave of emotion, and tears began to fall. They slid down his cheeks and splashed onto the ground, shattering like his broken heart.
