Upon arriving at Yingtai, Zaitian was in a foul mood, often taking his frustrations out on Jingfen. His brows were tightly knitted, and his eyes reflected irritation and anger.
“Jingfen, what do you have besides Aunt? I hate you the Yehe Nala Family! I hate you!” Zaitian shouted, throwing objects around him to the ground.
Due to his depression combined with agitation, Zaitian began to cough violently. He clutched his chest, bent over, his face turning red from the effort, and eventually collapsed into unconsciousness.
Jingfen was taken aback, rushing over to help him onto the bed. Her eyes were filled with worry as she frantically tended to him. When he finally woke up and saw Jingfen, the first words out of his mouth were, “I don’t want you to take care of me! Get out!” Zaitian glared at Jingfen with a look as sharp as a knife.
Jingfen did not flinch. “Emperor, isn’t Huazhen the one you’ve always loved?”
She stared directly at Zaitian, a hint of despair in her eyes.
“If it weren’t for you not bringing her here, how could I not see her! I don’t want to see you!” Zaitian yelled in fury.
With a smile, Jingfen slowly peeled away a layer of skin from her face, revealing Huazhen ’s features beneath.
Then, amidst Zaitian's stunned silence, she revealed the truth.
The one who had truly been thrown into the well was not Huazhen but Jingfen herself.
Jingfen had overheard a conversation between herself and Empress Dowager Cixi about dealing with Huazhen. She understood that during such national turmoil, the Emperor could hardly protect himself, let alone her; it was better for her to take action first.
Before taking action, she drugged the sleeping Jingfen, disguised her as herself, and threw her into the well. Then she transformed into Jingfen.
Jingfen would never know that Huazhen not only seized her position but also replaced her.
Xizi, Xizi, there was ultimately little joy, only sorrow.
Zaitian excitedly embraced Huazhen, saying, "My beloved, you are indeed clever; you have removed the thorn in my side!" He held her tightly, a smug smile on his face.
However, their days of happiness did not last long. Since the last time he fainted, Zaitian's health had deteriorated significantly, and later he caught a cold and fell bedridden.
Empress Dowager Cixi held Huazhen's hand and said, "Xizi, you have suffered over the years, but it’s alright; I have avenged our Yehe Nala."
Empress Dowager Cixi patted Huazhen's hand and then leaned in to whisper in her ear, her eyes glinting with malice.
Huazhen was taken aback; she widened her eyes in disbelief upon realizing that Empress Dowager Cixi had secretly replaced the medicine for Zaitian's cold with a slow-acting poison.
Her body trembled slightly, filled with terror.
On December 21st of the Guangxu Fourteenth Year, thirty four years, Zaitian succumbed to the poison.
Filled with hatred, Huazhen pondered throughout the night, her gaze resolute.
She used the same method to eliminate the elderly Empress Dowager Cixi, avenging both Zaitian and herself.
The winter of that year was destined to be extraordinary, as two key figures of the Qing Dynasty passed away one after another, just a day apart.
Huazhen publicly announced their deaths as a result of longing for the palace, stating that they had died from the grief of unfulfilled desires. Since there were no heirs left by Zaitian, her nephew Puyi ascended to the throne.
Not long after, she was brought back to the palace and honored as Empress Dowager Longyu. Dressed in splendid attire, she solemnly accepted the worship of those around her.
In the Year of Xuantong, Sun Yat-sen and others succeeded in the Wuchang Uprising, leading to the independence of various provinces in the south.
Meanwhile, Yuan Shikai's power grew stronger. Under his threats and temptations, along with a promise of four million each year, Huazhen signed the abdication edict without a second thought. With pen in hand, she signed her name without hesitation.
After all, the world was not hers to claim, Huazhen thought. Rather than anxiously watching others' expressions every day, it was better to enjoy life with money.
Thus, the Qing royal family came to an end under Huazhen's hand, bearing the name of Jingfen.
On March 15th of the second year of the Republic, Yuan Shikai paved his way to becoming emperor by stabbing Huazhen with a sharp knife.
Huazhen's eyes widened in terror and resentment as blood gushed from her wound.
In her final moments, she murmured, "Sister Xi, how wonderful it would be if we were not born into royalty."
